Initial results of NEXT-DEMO, a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment
2013
NEXT-DEMO is a large-scale prototype of the NEXT-100 detector, an electroluminescent time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136 using 100-150 kg of enriched xenon gas. NEXT-DEMO was built to prove the expected performance of NEXT-100, namely, energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at 2.5MeV and event topological reconstruction. In this paper we describe the prototype and its initial results. A resolution of 1.75% FWHM at 511 keV (which extrapolates to 0.8% FWHM at 2.5 MeV) was obtained at 10 bar pressure using a gamma-ray calibration source. Also, a basic study of the event topology along the longitudinal coordinate is presented, proving that it…
Radiopurity control in the NEXT-100 double beta decay experiment: procedures and initial measurements
2013
[EN] The "Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon Time-Projection Chamber" (NEXT) is intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136, which requires a severe suppression of potential backgrounds. An extensive screening and material selection process is underway for NEXT since the control of the radiopurity levels of the materials to be used in the experimental set-up is a must for rare event searches. First measurements based on Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry and gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (Spain) are described here. Activity results for natural radioactive chains and other common radionucl…
Right ventricular collagen type III and IV gene expression increases during early phases of endurance training in hypobaric hypoxic condition
1997
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of prolonged exposure to hypobaric hypoxic condition, physical training and their combination on collagen type I, III and IV gene expression in the ventricles and atria of rat heart. Male rats were assigned to four groups: normobaric sedentary (NS) and trained (NT), and hypobaric sedentary (HS) and trained (HT). Exposure to and treadmill running training in hypobaric condition were carried out in a hypobaric chamber (770–740 mbar, 2250–2550 m). Experimental periods were 10, 21 and 56 days; the groups of 91 days served as recovery groups from experimental settings of 56 days. Exposure to hypobaric condition as such and in combination wit…
Effect of the surface charge of liposomes on their uptake by angiogenic tumor vessels
2003
Recently, cationic liposomes have been shown to preferentially target the angiogenic endothelium of tumors. It was the aim of our study to investigate the influence of liposomal surface charge on the uptake and kinetics of liposomes into solid tumors and tumor vasculature. Experiments were performed in the amelanotic hamster melanoma A-Mel-3 growing in the dorsal skinfold chamber preparation of male Syrian golden hamsters. Fluorescently labeled liposomes with different surface charge were prepared. Accumulation of i.v. injected liposomes was assessed by quantitative intravital fluorescence microscopy of tumor and surrounding host tissue. The histological distribution of liposomes was analyz…
Mechanistic basis for unexpected bioavailability enhancement of polyelectrolyte complexes incorporating BCS class III drugs and carrageenans
2013
The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of λ-carrageenan to work as an absorption modifying excipient in combination with formulations of BCS class 3 substances. Trospium chloride was used as a model BCS class 3 substance. Polyelectrolyte complexes of trospium and λ-carrageenan were produced by layer-by-layer complexation. A λ-carrageenan-containing formulation was administered either in capsules size 9 to rats by gavage or directly into ligated intestinal loops of rats. Exceptionally strong variations were observed in the plasma concentrations of the rats that received λ-carrageenan compared to the control group, but enhanced plasma concentrations were observed only in…
Standardization of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) sperm motility evaluation by CASA software
2013
[EN] The development of powerful computer-assisted sperm analysis software has made kinetic studies of spermatozoa possible. This system has been used and validated for several species, but some technical questions have emerged regarding fish sample evaluations (i.e., frame rate, sperm dilution, chamber model, time of analysis, magnification lens, etc.). In the present study, we have evaluated the effects of different procedural and biological settings with the aim to correctly measure sperm quality parameters of the European eel. The use of different chambers did not affect the sperm motility parameters. However, regarding lens magnification, 10x was the most accurate lens, showing the lea…
Echocardiographic reference ranges for normal cardiac chamber size: Results from the NORRE study
2014
AimsAvailability of normative reference values for cardiac chamber quantitation is a prerequisite for accurate clinical application of echocardiography. In this study, we report normal reference ranges for cardiac chambers size obtained in a large group of healthy volunteers accounting for gender and age. Echocardiographic data were acquired using state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound equipment following chamber quantitation protocols approved by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.MethodsA total of 734 (mean age: 45.8 ± 13.3 years) healthy volunteers (320 men and 414 women) were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORR…
Ion Pairing with Bile Salts Modulates Intestinal Permeability and Contributes to Food–Drug Interaction of BCS Class III Compound Trospium Chloride
2013
In the current study the involvement of ion pair formation between bile salts and trospium chloride (TC), a positively charged Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) class III substance, showing a decrease in bioavailability upon coadministration with food (negative food effect) was investigated. Isothermal titration calorimetry provided evidence of a reaction between TC and bile acids. An effect of ion pair formation on the apparent partition coefficient (APC) was examined using (3)H-trospium. The addition of bovine bile and bile extract porcine led to a significant increase of the APC. In vitro permeability studies of trospium were performed across Caco-2-monolayers and excised seg…
Assessment of anterior segment measurements using a high-resolution imaging device
2020
To assess the repeatability of several anterior segment parameters obtained with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).We measured 5-times consequently several parameters in 69 eyes using the ANTERION SS-OCT. White-to-white (WTW), angle-to-angle (ATA), spur-to-spur (STS), and lens vault distances were measured in the horizontal- and vertical-meridian. Anterior-chamber-angle (ACA), scleral-spur-angle (SSA), angle-opening-distance (AOD), and trabecular-iris-space-area (TISA) were measured at 500 and 750 μm for the superior-, nasal-,inferior-, and temporal-quadrants. Intrasubject standard deviation (Sw),coefficient of variation (CoV), coefficient of repeatability (CoR), and intrac…
Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography: Rationale, study design, and methodology (NORRE Study)
2013
International audience; BACKGROUND: Availability of normative reference values for cardiac chamber dimensions, volumes, mass, and function is a prerequisite for the accurate application of echocardiography for both clinical and research purposes. However, due to the lack of consistency in current echocardiographic 'reference values', their use for clinical decision-making remains questionable. AIMS: The aim of the 'Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography Study (NORRE Study)' is to obtain a set of 'normal values' for cardiac chamber geometry and function in a large cohort of healthy Caucasian individuals aged over a wide range of ages (25-75 years) using both conventional and advanced e…
