On Combinatorial Generation of Prefix Normal Words

2014

A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present an efficient algorithm for exhaustively listing the prefix normal words with a fixed length. The algorithm is based on the fact that the language of prefix normal words is a bubble language, a class of binary languages with the property that, for any word w in the language, exchanging the first occurrence of 01 by 10 in w results in another word in the language. We prove that each prefix normal word is produced in O(n) amortized time, and conjecture, based on expe…

The sea urchin embryo: a model to study Alzheimer's beta amyloid induced toxicity.

2009

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The cause of AD is closely related to the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide in the neuritic plaques. The use of animal model systems represents a good strategy to elucidate the molecular mechanism behind the development of this pathology. Here we use the Paracentrotus lividus embryo to identify molecules and pathways that can be involved in the degenerative process. As a first step, we identified the presence of an antigen related to the human APP, called Pl APP. This antigen, after gastrula stage, is processed producing a polypeptide of about 10 kDa. By immunohistochemistry we localized the Pl APP antigen in some ser…

Room acoustical parameters: A factor analysis approach

2009

Abstract In this study, we determined the most representative acoustical parameters for halls intended for verbal or music audition. Our study was carried out in nine halls of different shapes and designed for different uses. We measured the impulse response at a great number of points (many more than the minimum required by the ISO 3382 norm). From a physical viewpoint, all halls are enclosed three-dimensional areas. Our work hypothesis is that objective (measurable) acoustical parameters, or a combination of such parameters, must provide the acoustical information specific to each hall and must make it possible to grade each hall. Factor analysis was used to obtain these grading parameter…

Effects of power resistance training program with elastic bands on body composition, muscle strength and physical function in older women

2020

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a power-strength resistance program with elastic bands on body composition, physical function, and muscle strength in older women. For such purpose, a randomized controlled trial with a pre-post-intervention design was conducted. Thus, 58 healthy, physically independent, sedentary women, aged 65-85 years, were randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 28) or control group (n = 30). Measurements of body composition (total mass, total fat mass, total skeletal-muscle mass, and body fat percentage), isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexors and extensors (at 60º/second and 180º/second), and physical performance (flexibility, agility/dyn…

Tips on ligand immobilization and kinetic study using surface plasmon resonance.

2016

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique offers a robust label-free approach applicable in various investigations including binding affinity, specificity and kinetics of biological macromolecules (e.g., peptides, proteins and nucleotidase) and small molecules. SPR provides extremely important data on the kinetics and affinity of substances examined, through which bio-specific interaction(s) can be established by the analysis of adsorption of analyte onto the immobilized ligand(s) on a sensor-based analytical system. Due to SPR wide applications in biomedical laboratories, the aim of this editorial is to highlight the importance of SPR in affinity kinetics and ligand immobilization.

Spectroscopic Detection and Structure of Hydroxidooxidosulfur (HOSO) Radical, An Important Intermediate in the Chemistry of Sulfur-Bearing Compounds

2013

The rotational spectrum of hydroxidooxidosulfur, HOSO, an intermediate of particular interest in the combustion of sulfur-rich fuels, has been determined to high accuracy from gas-phase measurements. Detection of specific isotopic species using isotopically enriched gases suggests that HOSO is formed in our discharge nozzle via the reaction H + SO2 (+M) → HOSO (+M). A precise experimental r0 geometry has also been derived from the isotopic analysis; HOSO has a cis configuration, but the subtle structural question of its planarity remains unresolved. From the derived spectroscopic constants, in situ and remote sensing for this fundamental radical can now be undertaken in a variety of environ…

Highly Selective Detection of Nerve‐Agent Simulants with BODIPY Dyes

2014

Two chromo-fluorogenic probes, each based on the boron dipyrromethene core, have been developed for the detection of nerve-agent mimics. These chemosensors display both a color change and a significant enhancement of fluorescence in the presence of diethylcyanophosphonate (DCNP) and diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP). No interference from other organophosphorus compounds or acids has been observed. Two portable chemosensor kits have been developed and tested to demonstrate its practical application in real-time monitoring.

Symmetry and models of single-walled TiO2 nanotubes with rectangular morphology

2011

Abstract The formalism of line symmetry groups for one-periodic (1D) nanostructures with rotohelical symmetry has been applied for symmetry analysis of single-walled titania nanotubes (SW TiO2 NTs) formed by rolling up the stoichiometric two-periodic (2D) slabs of anatase structure. Either six- or twelve-layer (101) slabs have been cut from TiO2 crystal in a stable anatase phase. After structural optimization, the latter keeps the centered rectangular symmetry of initial slab slightly compressed along a direction coincided with large sides of elemental rectangles. We have considered two sets of SW TiO2 NTs with optimized six- and twelve-layer structures, which possess chiralities (−n, n) an…
