Recently it has become clear that the neuronal compartment plays a more important role than previously thought in the pathology of multiple sclerosis. Apart from demyelination, neuronal pathology is apparently largely responsible for the brain atrophy that can be observed early on and throughout the course of the disease. The loss of axons and their neurons in the course of chronic neuroinflammation is a major factor determining long-term disability in patients. AbstractIncreases in the concentration of free calcium in the cytosol are one of the general events that relay an external stimulus to the internal cellular machinery and allow eukaryotic organisms, including plants, to mount a specific biological response. Different lines of evidence have shown that other intracellular organelles contribute to the regulation of free calcium homeostasis in the cytosol. The vacuoles, the endoplasmic reticulum and the cell wall constitute storage compartments for mobilizable calcium. Distribution and Dynamics of Transcription-Associated Proteins during Parvovirus Infection

ABSTRACT Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection leads to reorganization of nuclear proteinaceous subcompartments. Our studies showed that virus infection causes a time-dependent increase in the amount of viral nonstructural protein NS1 mRNA. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching showed that the recovery kinetics of nuclear transcription-associated proteins, TATA binding protein (TBP), transcription factor IIB (TFIIB), and poly(A) binding protein nuclear 1 (PABPN1) were different in infected and noninfected cells, pointing to virus-induced alterations in binding dynamics of these proteins.

Abstract Objective To report morbidity and oncological outcomes in a consecutive series of lateral isolated recurrent gynecological cancer involving the pelvic side wall (PSW) including the iliopsoas muscle. Material and methods We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive series between 6/2013 and 12/2015 of lateral isolated recurrent gynecological malignancies treated with a lateral endopelvic resection (LEPR). Rewarding Properties of Testosterone in Intact Male Mice

The present study examined the rewarding properties of 4-androsten-17β-ol-3-one testosterone in intact male mice using the conditioned place preference (CPP) technique. In Experiment 1, the pharmacokinetics of 0.8 and 1.2 mg/kg of testosterone were studied to determine the most appropriate temporal interval to test behavior. Additionally, the locomotor activity was recorded to control a possible interfering effect on CPP. The maximum testosterone concentration was registered at 45 min of administration, and no effects on activity were found. Electron Microscopic Studies of Spruce Needles in Connection with the Occurrence of Novel Forest Decline.

Needles of four spruce trees showing different degrees of novel kinds of forest decline were investigated by electron microscopy. Green needles appearing at least superficially still intact were selected for the present investigation. Most of the mesophyll appeared to be undamaged. However, groups of atypical mesophyll cells were found close to the endodermis or the hypodermis. The chloroplasts of the apparently damaged cells were particularly affected. Changes in the matrix of the chloroplasts, i.e,. increased affinity to osmium, occurrence of extensive nests of plastoglobuli, as well as damage to the membranes, i.e. lesions in the envelope and abnormal thylakoid membranes, were observed. …

NG2-expressing glia are precursors to oligodendrocytes and subpopulations of astrocytes. They are unique among glial cells in that they enter into synaptic specialisations with neurons throughout all areas of grey and white matter and at all ages. To date, the NG2 cells appear to represent a postsynaptic compartment, and synapses are formed with axons.
