Green Roofs as Effective Tools for Improving the Indoor Comfort Levels of Buildings—An Application to a Case Study in Sicily

2020

In the line of pursuing better energy efficiency in human activities that would result in a more sustainable utilization of resources, the building sector plays a relevant role, being responsible for almost 40% of both energy consumption and the release of pollutant substances in the atmosphere. For this purpose, techniques aimed at improving the energy performances of buildings&rsquo

Correlation of wood-based components and dewatering properties of waste activated sludge from pulp and paper industry.

2010

Large amounts of wet sludge are produced annually in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Already in pulp and paper industry, more than ten million tons of primary sludge, waste activated sludge, and de-inking sludge is generated. Waste activated sludge contains large quantities of bound water, which is difficult to dewater. Low water content would be a matter of high calorific value in incineration but it also has effects on the volume and the quality of the matter to be handled in sludge disposal. In this research waste activated sludges from different pulp and paper mills were chemically characterised and dewatered. Correlations of chemical composition and dewatering properties…

Static Digestion Models: General Introduction

2015

Several in vitro methods have been developed to simulate the physiological conditions of the human gastrointestinal digestion, the simplest being the static methods. The following chapter clarifies the concepts of bioaccessibility and dialyzability, and describes the conditions (pH, enzymes, agitation, etc.) to be applied in oral, gastric and intestinal phases when assessing a food component (nutrient, bioactive or toxin) or a food product, in a single or multi-phase model. The advantages and disadvantages of the static models vs. dynamic and in vivo models are discussed, and a review of specific conditions applied on nutrients (minerals, vitamins, proteins, fatty acids, etc.) and bioactive…

Gamma radiation of EVA-AA/MMA swollen systems to obtain mechanically improved blends

2002

In this work a "new" way to obtain "compatibilised" blends of rubber-glassy thermoplastic components is presented. Polyethylen-vinyl acetate acrylic acid terpolymer is swollen by methylmetacrylate and the system is irradiated through gamma rays in order to induce polymerisation of the monomer. Solubility and dynamic mechanical tests indicate the formation of a two phase system, even though in presence of strong interactions between the two components. Mechanical tensile behaviour is that of a ductile material with appreciable modulus values.

Formation and function of a complement-activating enzyme generated from factors of guinea pig serum and cobra venom

1971

An enzymatic complex can be formed by factors from guinea pig serum and cobra venom, which is able to activate C3 bypassing C1, C4 and C2. Formation and action of the enzyme are described. The action on C3 results in an activation of the terminal complement components and in membrane destruction provided suitable membrane receptors are available.

Electron-deficient trifluoromethyl-substituted sub-components affect the properties of M4L4 tetrahedral cages

2017

Two supramolecular tetrahedral cages based on a new electron-deficient trifluoromethyl-substituted pyridylimine ligand are synthesised by sub-component self-assembly. Their structures are characterised by NMR und UV-Vis spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The iron(II) complex shows host–guest chemistry, complex-to-complex transformations and novel electronic properties. peerReviewed

Tiešsaistes specializētas datorspēļu spēlētāju vārdnīcas projekts

2015

Pulsed electric field (PEF) as an efficient technology for food additives and nutraceuticals development

2020

Abstract The use of pulsed electric field (PEF) technology has been extensively investigated in the area of food pasteurization and gene transfection. In the recent years the technology has also shown promising application in the development of various plant- and microorganism-based added-value compounds. The main working principle of PEF is electroporation or electropermeabilization of cell membranes. The pretreatment of biological tissues with PEF improves mass transfer during solvent extraction of metabolites and thereby increases the extraction efficiency. Moreover, the application of PEF at lower intensity has shown to induce stress on the biological tissues that in turn improves the a…

Functional principal component analysis of quantile curves

2017

Literature on functional data analysis is mainly focused on estimation of individuals curves and characterization of average dynamics. The idea underlying this proposal is to focus attention on other particular features of the distribution of the observed data, moving from mean functions towards functional quantiles. The motivating examples are functional data sets that are collections of high frequency data recorded along time. As quantiles provide information on various aspects of a time series, we propose a modelling framework for the joint estimation of functional quantiles, varying along time, and functional principal components, summarizing some common dynamics shared by the functiona…
