Commentaries on our new ways of perceiving disasters

2010

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to help readers gain more understanding of the new phenomena of terror, risk, and threat perception.Design/methodology/approachVarious authors are reviewed: Castel, Beck, Baral, Kellner, Sabada, Korstanje, and in particular, Baudrillard.FindingsSeveral matches are found among the reviewed authors which comprise, for example: late modernity (from 1970 to date) witnesses an increase of fears, panic, and risk assessments in social imaginary; these concerns are part of a process that opens the future to the contingency. That way, the decision‐making process in human beings sheds light on certain aspects of life such as health, body‐care planning but this has …

Parents' experiences of neonatal transfer. A meta-study of qualitative research 2000-2017.

2018

Transfers of critically ill neonates are frequent phenomena. Even though parents’ participation is regarded as crucial in neonatal care, a transfer often means that parents and neonates are separated. A systematic review of the parents’ experiences of neonatal transfer is lacking. This paper describes a meta-study addressing qualitative research about parents’ experiences of neonatal transfer. Through deconstruction and reflections of theories, methods and empirical data, the aim was to achieve a deeper understanding of theoretical, empirical, contextual, historical and methodological issues of qualitative studies concerning parents’ experiences of neonatal transfer over the course of this …

Governance of Projects: Generating value by linking projects with their permanent organisation

2019

Abstract There exists little research into how value is effectively generated by temporary projects from the wider perspective of a permanent organisation. This paper investigates empirically how ‘Governance of Projects’ – the way in which a single, permanent organisation identifies, creates, and subsequently harvests value through multiple projects – occurs in four private-sector case companies. Data were collected from in-depth interviews with a wide range of employees and from internal operational documents. These data were codified and analysed as evidence of the types and intensity of links between organisational elements. The results illuminate the complex interplay of links that are …

Perceived safety and attributed value as predictors of the intention to use autonomous vehicles: A national study with Spanish drivers

2019

Abstract Sooner than later, the growing development of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) will represent not only an imminent transformation of transportation dynamics, but also further advantages for their users, including many improvements in road crash prevention, efficiency and sustainability. However, different concerns and constraints may affect the intention of adopting this technology among its potential customers, especially for what concerns those constraints related to safety, viability and stability. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of perceived safety and value attributed to the AV in the drivers’ intention to use it, considering the drivers’ demographic factors,…

Perceived Value in Sporting Events (PVSP): A Further Step for the Strategic Management

2020

The perception of sporting events spectators is a crucial area of research in the sport management field. These studies analyze different variables, the perceived value of which has gained relevance in recent years. By providing superior value to consumers, organizations can achieve a competitive advantage and guarantee their sustainability. However, a limitation found in the literature is that most of the scales used to measure it are one-dimensional or with single items, and do not provide enough information. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Value (PVSE) for the evaluation of sporting events. The questionnaire was…

Corporate social responsibility and managerial compensation: further evidence from spanish listed companies

2021

Ongoing regulatory efforts aim to link managerial compensation with a firm’s performance. However, little is known about whether and how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals are considered in the design of the managerial compensation scheme. This paper addresses this research question by analyzing a sample of Spanish listed firms for the period spanning 2013–2018. The outcomes of the regressions suggest that there is a positive relationship between CSR and the managerial compensation, but this relationship is significant only with lower levels of CSR. The study also reveals that CSR is positively associated with the proportion of equity-based compensation and, therefore, negatively a…

Sustainability focused decision-making in building renovation

2017

Abstract An overview of recent research related to building renovation has revealed that efforts to date do not address sustainability issues comprehensively. The question then arises in regard to the holistic sustainability objectives within building renovation context. In order to deal with this question, the research adopts a multi-dimensional approach involving literature review, exploration of existing assessment methods and methodologies, individual and focus group interviews, and application of Soft Systems Methodologies (SSM) with Value Focused Thinking (VFT). In doing so, appropriate data about sustainability objectives have been collected and structured, and subsequently verified …

“Piero Sraffa: economic reality, the economist and economic theory. An interpretation”.

2007

We carry out a textual analysis of Sraffa's main published contributions to pure economics in order to elaborate a rational reconstruction of an aspect of Sraffa's implicit methodology which has not yet been duly investigated. We refer to the threefold relationship between ‘economic reality’, ‘the economist/observer’ and ‘economic theory’. We elucidate the constraints which, for Sraffa, should bind the economists' arbitrariness and we trace the elements of continuity and evolution from the 1925–6 critique of Marshallian economics to Production of Commodities.

Buckling and post-buckling of variable stiffness plates with cutouts by a single-domain Ritz method

2023

Structural components with variable stiffness can provide better performances with respect to classical ones and offer an enlarged design space for their optimization. They are attractive candidates for advanced lightweight structural applications whose functionalities often impose the presence of cutouts that requires accurate and effective analysis for their design. In the present work, a single-domain Ritz formulation is proposed, implemented and validated for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling behaviour of variable stiffness plates with cutouts. The plate model is based on the first-order shear deformation theory with nonlinear von Karman strain–displacement relationships. The p…
