The α and γ plasma modes in plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition with O2-N2 capacitive discharges
2017
Two distinguishable plasma modes in the O2–N2 radio frequency capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) used in remote plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) were observed. Optical emission spectroscopy and spectra interpretation with rate coefficient analysis of the relevant processes were used to connect the detected modes to the α and γ modes of the CCP discharge. To investigate the effect of the plasma modes on the PEALD film growth, ZnO and TiO2 films were deposited using both modes and compared to the films deposited using direct plasma. The growth rate, thickness uniformity, elemental composition, and crystallinity of the films were found to correlate with the deposition mode. In re…
Tuning of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and domain structures in magnetic thin film multilayers
2019
We investigate the magnetic domain structures and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arising in CoFeB films interfaced with selected heavy metal (HM) layers with large spin Hall angles in HM/CoFeB/MgO (HM = W, Pt, Pd, W x Ta1−x ) stacks as a function of CoFeB thickness and composition for both as-deposited and annealed materials stacks. The coercivity and the anisotropy fields of annealed material stacks are higher than for the as-deposited stacks due to crystallisation of the ferromagnetic layer. Generally a critical thickness of MgO > 1 nm provides adequate oxide formation at the top interface as a requirement for the generation of PMA. We demonstrate that in stacks with Pt as th…
Quantitative analysis of magnetization reversal in Ni thin films on unpoled and poled (0 1 1) [PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3]0.68–[PbTiO3]0.32piezoelectric substrat…
2016
The field angle dependence of the magnetization reversal in 20 nm thick polycrystalline Ni films grown on piezoelectric (0 1 1) [PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3](0.68)-[PbTiO3](0.32) (PMN-PT) substrates is analysed quantitatively to study the magnetic anisotropy induced in the film by poling the piezosubstrate. While the PMN-PT is in the unpoled state, the magnetization reversal is almost isotropic as expected from the polycrystalline nature of the film and corresponding to an orientation ratio (OR) of 1.2. The orientation ratio is obtained by fitting the angular dependence of normalized remanent magnetization to an adapted Stoner-Wohlfarth relation. Upon poling the piezosubstrate, a strong uniaxial anisotr…
ABSOLUTE THERMOELECTRIC POWER OF Pb–Sn ALLOYS
2011
International audience; In this work, absolute thermoelectric power (ATP) of Pb, Sn, Pb-20 wt.% Sn, Pb-40 wt.% Sn, Pb-60 wt.% Sn, Pb-80 wt.% Sn are measured. Measurements are performed in a temperature gradient furnace from 20 degrees C to 500 degrees C, for both solid and liquid states. Temperatures are measured with T-type copper-constantan thermocouples, while voltage signal between copper electrodes of those thermocouples is recorded in order to calculate ATP of the sample metal.
Quasi-antiferromagnetic multilayer stacks with 90 degree coupling mediated by thin Fe oxide spacers
2019
We fabricated quasiantiferromagnetic (quasi-AFM) layers with alternating antiparallel magnetization in the neighboring domains via 90° magnetic coupling through an Fe-O layer. We investigated the magnetic properties and the relationship between the magnetic domain size and the 90° magnetic coupling via experiments and calculations. Two types of samples with a Ru buffer and a (Ni80Fe20)Cr40 buffer were prepared, and we found that with the NiFeCr buffer, the sample has a flatter Fe-O layer, leading to stronger 90° magnetic coupling and a smaller domain size compared with the Ru buffer sample. This trend is well explained by the bilinear and biquadratic coupling coefficients, A12 and B12, in L…
Modification of magnetic anisotropy in Ni thin films by poling of (011) PMN-PT piezosubstrates
2016
ABSTRACTThis study reports the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of 20 nm thick polycrystalline Ni films deposited by magnetron sputtering on unpoled piezoelectric (011) [PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3]0.68-[PbTiO3]0.32 (PMN-PT) substrates. The magnetoresistance (MR), as well as the magnetization reversal, is found to depend on the polarization state of the piezosubstrate. Upon poling the PMN-PT substrate, which results in a transfer of strain to the Ni film, the MR value decreases by a factor of 12 at room temperature and a factor of 21 at 50 K for the current direction along the PMN-PT [100] direction, and slightly increases for the [01] current direction. Simultaneously, a strong increase in the …
Evaluation of Vertical Fatigue Cracks by Means of Flying Laser Thermography
2019
The present paper proposes a new procedure to analyze the temperature field distribution during Flying Laser Spot and Laser Line Thermographic scanning (FLST, FLLT) of metallic components, in order to detect vertical surface cracks. The methodology exploits the changes in the temperature field produced by a vertical crack, acting as a barrier towards heat diffusion, when the laser approaches the defect. A number of small regions of interests (ROIs) is placed nearby and around the laser source. The average temperature from each ROI is then monitored during the laser scanning. Vertical cracks can be detected by analyzing and comparing the temperature fluctuations from each ROI when the laser …
B-Scan image analysis for position and shape defect definition in plates
2016
Definition of size, shape and location of defects into a mechanical component is of extreme importance in the manufacturing industry in general and particularly in high-tech applications, and in applications that can become dangerous due to the structural failure of mechanical components. In this paper, a laser-UT system has been used to define position and shape of internal defects in aluminum plates. An infrared pulsed laser is used to generate ultrasonic waves in a point of the plate and a CW laser interferometer is used as receiver to acquire the out-of-plane displacements due to the ultrasonic waves in another point of the plate. The method consists of acquiring a B-Scan map on which s…
Effect of Mn doping on the low-temperature synthesis of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) polymorphs
2019
Abstract Effect of Mn doping on the low-temperature synthesis of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) polymorphs was demonstrated in α- and β-TCP polymorphs prepared by wet precipitation method under identical conditions and annealed at 700 °C. Calcium phosphates with Mn doping level in the range from 1 to 5 mol% were studied and the formation of desired polymorph was controlled by varying Mn content in as-prepared precipitates. It was found that increasing Mn content resulted in the formation of β-TCP, while α-TCP was obtained with low Mn doping level, whereas a mixture of two polymorphs was obtained for intermediate Mn concentrations. Moreover, doping with Mn ions allowed the synthesis of β-TCP at …
HCl gas gettering of low-cost silicon
2013
HCl gas gettering is a cheap and simple technique to reduce transition metal concentrations in silicon. It is attractive especially for low-cost silicon materials like upgraded metallurgical grade (UMG) silicon, which usually contain 3d transition metals in high concentrations. Etching of silicon by HCl gas occurs during HCl gas gettering above a certain onset temperature. The etching rate as well as the gettering efficiency was experimentally determined as a function of the gettering temperature, using UMG silicon wafers. The activation energy of the etching reaction by HCl gas was calculated from the obtained data. The gettering efficiency was determined by analyzing Ni as a representativ…
