Autonomous acquisition of natural language
2014
An important part of human intelligence is the ability to use language. Humans learn how to use language in a society of language users, which is probably the most effective way to learn a language from the ground up. Principles that might allow an artificial agents to learn language this way are not known at present. Here we present a framework which begins to address this challenge. Our auto-catalytic, endogenous, reflective architecture (AERA) supports the creation of agents that can learn natural language by observation. We present results from two experiments where our S1 agent learns human communication by observing two humans interacting in a realtime mock television interview, using…
Appetizer or main dish? Explaining the use of Facebook news posts as a substitute for other news sources
2019
An increasing number of, especially younger, users use Facebook as their primary source for news about political and societal issues. At the same time, research suggests that Facebook use contributes to societal knowledge gaps. Against this background, we investigate the antecedents of using Facebook as a substitute for other news sources. We argue that exposure to news posts on Facebook increases the feeling of being well-informed, regardless of actual knowledge acquisition. This might lead users, especially those with a low need for cognition (NfC), to use Facebook as a substitute for other news sources. We test these assumptions with an online survey (n=390) of German Internet users. Res…
Neurons as targets for T cells in the nervous system
2013
International audience; Accumulating evidence shows that T cells penetrate the central nervous system (CNS) parenchyma in several autoimmune, infectious, and degenerative neurological diseases. The structural and functional consequences for CNS neurons of their encounter with activated T cells have been investigated in several experimental systems, including ex vivo co-cultures, electrophysiology, and in vivo imaging. Here, we review the modalities of neuron/T cell interactions. We substantiate the contention that T cells are directly responsible for neuronal damage in a large number of neurological diseases and discuss mechanisms of neuronal damage mediated by distinct T cell subsets, the …

Cycle-triggered averaging of respiration-related neuronal activity
1985
Abstract A computer system is presented which provides off-line computation of cycle-triggered histograms (CTH) of respiration-related neuronal activity. Binwidths of the histograms are freely selectable by software from 10 ms to 100 ms. For special evaluation purposes. CTHs can be standardized in different ways concerning cycle duration as well as amplitude. Time incidence of maximum frequency, center of gravity and expiration-to-inspiration phase transition within the respiratory cycle are computed. The system employs special hardware interfaces to an 8-bit microcomputer which are briefly described. Data acquisition, data manipulation and output handling of the results are performed by ch…
Effects of video games : English language learning of girls
2014
Data-independent acquisition strategies for quantitative proteomics
2013
In shotgun proteomics, data-dependent precursor acquisition (DDA) is widely used to profile protein components in complex samples. Although very popular, there are some inherent limitations to the DDA approach, such as irreproducible precursor ion selection, under-sampling and long instrument cycle times. Unbiased ‘data-independent acquisition’ (DIA) strategies try to overcome those limitations. In MSE, which is supported by Waters Q-TOF instrument platforms, such as the Synapt G2-S, a wide band pass filter is used for precursor selection. During acquisition, alternating MS scans are collected at low and high collision energy (CE), providing precursor and fragment ion information, respectiv…
Affine compensation of illumination in hyperspectral remote sensing images
2009
A problem when working with optical satellite or airborne images is the need to compensate for changes in the illumination conditions at the time of acquisition. This is particularly critical when working with time series of data. Atmospheric correction strategies based on radiative transfer codes may provide a rigorous solution but it may not be the best solution for situations where a huge amount of hyperspectral images may need to be processed and computational time is a critical factor. The GMES (”Global Monitoring for Environment and Security”) initiative has promoted the creation of a new generation of satellites (the SENTINEL series) with ”ultra-high resolution” and ”superspectral im…
In-depth evaluation of software tools for data-independent acquisition based label-free quantification.
2015
Label-free quantification (LFQ) based on data-independent acquisition workflows currently experiences increasing popularity. Several software tools have been recently published or are commercially available. The present study focuses on the evaluation of three different software packages (Progenesis, synapter, and ISOQuant) supporting ion mobility enhanced data-independent acquisition data. In order to benchmark the LFQ performance of the different tools, we generated two hybrid proteome samples of defined quantitative composition containing tryptically digested proteomes of three different species (mouse, yeast, Escherichia coli). This model dataset simulates complex biological samples con…
