Abstract The regeneration of plantlets was successful from Ophiorrhiza pumila callus cultures, from which a new glucosyloxy camptothecin, 9-β-glucosyloxycamptothecin, together with 15 metabolites including six camptothecin-related alkaloids was isolated. (3S)-Deoxypumiloside, one of the plausible biogenetic precursors of camptothecin, could not be found, whereas the (3R) epimer was isolated from the regenerated plants.

Histoincompatibility reactions in the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma

The xenogeneic- and allogeneic immunological specificity of the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma has been investigated. Xenogeneic histoicompatibility reactions have been observed between this hydrocoral and a series of species belonging to the Demospongiae and to the Anthozoa (both Hexacorallia and Octocorallia). The xenogeneic histoincompatibility reactions proceed in the following sequence: (a) Species-unspecific sensitization; (b) necrosis formation, which is very likely due to an autolytic process; (c) callus formation, due to an hyperplastic growth of stolons; and (d) formation of a contact barrier in form of a barrier layer or a restored stolonial layer. Cryopreservation of Limonium serotinum apical meristems from in vitro plantlets using droplet-vitrification

Abstract In this study in vitro shoot tips of a Sicilian genotype of Limonium serotinum were successfully cryopreserved using the droplet-vitrification technique. Growth recovery of cryopreserved shoot tips was possible only when samples were pretreated for 16 h in liquid medium with 0.3 M sucrose, then for 5 h in liquid medium with 0.7 M sucrose before performing the cryopreservation protocol. Summary 1. The amount of allantoin and allantoate was determined in moss callus grown under various light conditions. It can reach 26,5 % of the plant nitrogen content. The accumulation is influenced by light intensity and colour. 2. Red-light (660 nm) causes a greater allantoin level in the cells than blue light and white light illumination. Red-light favours the formation of young setae from the moss callus. We could detect a relation between the intensity of seta-development and the amount of allantoin. Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration from pistil transverse thin cell layers of lemon (Citrus limon)

Callus induction, somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration were obtained in Citrus limon (L.) Burm. (cv. Femminello) from cultures of pistil transverse thin cell layer explants [(t)TCLs]. Explants were cultured on two different media, based on Murashige and Skoog salts and vitamins, supplemented with 500 mg l-1 malt extract (MSI), or 500 mg l-1 malt extract and 13.3 ¼M 6-benzylaminopurine (MSII). Rice protoplasts isolated directly from mature-embryo-derived calli

Mature-embryo-derived calli of japonica rice (Oryza sativa L) Taipei 309 were used for replicated protoplast isolation experiments. Six out of nine callus lines produced protoplasts with satisfactory yield of 5.20×106–8.96×106 protoplasts/g FW (fresh weight). The remaining three callus lines initiated from seeds of cryopreserved-callus-derived plants had rooty calli, resulting in low yield of protoplasts and a large number of isolated banana-shape intact cells. Viability of protoplasts ranged 87.46%–94.15%. The average size of protoplasts was 207.49–379.04 μm2 in different callus lines. Osteogenesis imperfecta and hyperplastic callus formation: light- and electron-microscopic findings.

In rare cases of osteogenesis imperfecta, an "overshoot" growth of new bone may occur, which, clinically gives the impression of a tumour. This condition is known as hyperplastic callus formation. Morphology showed an excessive mixed desmal-chondral osteoneogenesis. Atypical collagen fibrils in non-callus tissue represent an indicator for this callus formation in individual patients.
