Baudelaire’s Influence on Duo Duo’s Poetry through Chen Jingrong, a Chinese Woman Poet Translating from French
2012
Abstract As a woman poet, Chen Jingrong’s productions encompassed the whole 20 th century: of particular interest are her poetry translations from the French language. Thanks to her translation work, valuable understanding of Charles Baudelaire’s poetry was made available in China, which influenced the Chinese contemporary poet, Duo Duo, when he first started writing poetry during his youth. This paper tries to depict the importance of this contribution of Chen Jingrong and its effect on the process of renovation of the contemporary poetic scene in China. Keywords: Chen Jingrong, Baudelaire, Duo Duo, contemporary Chinese poetry, translation Izvlecek Opus kitajske pesnice Chen Jingrong zaobj…
Perceived Parental and Peer Support in Relation to Canadian, Cuban, and Spanish Adolescents’ Valuing of Academics and Intrinsic Academic Motivation
2011
The aim of this study was to explore possible parent and peer influences on adolescents’ valuing of academics and intrinsic academic motivation in cultures varying in traditional emphasis on the family unit (Cuba, Canada, and Spain). Perceived parent and peer support, parents’ expectations, and valuing of academics significantly predicted adolescents’ valuing of education and motivation. Spanish adolescents were less motivated than members of the other ethnic groups. The Spanish participants also reported lower perceived parental expectations than Chinese Canadians and less perceived peer support than did Cubans and Chinese Canadians. Perceived social support from same- and opposite-sex fr…
Parenting culture(s): Ideal-parent beliefs across 37 countries
2022
What is it to be “an ideal parent”? Does the answer differ across countries and social classes? To answer these questions in a way that minimizes bias and ethnocentrism, we used open-ended questions to explore ideal-parent beliefs among 8,357 mothers and 3,517 fathers from 37 countries. Leximancer Semantic Network Analysis was utilized to first determine parenting culture zones (i.e., countries with shared ideal-parent beliefs) and then extract the predominant themes and concepts in each culture zone. The results yielded specific types of ideal-parent beliefs in five parenting culture zones: being “responsible and children/family-focused” for Asian parents, being “responsible and proper de…
Cultural diversity as a resource or an obstacle for teaching practices in multicultural milieu: Experience of a training course for Italian teachers …
2017
This contribution, examining the increasing presence at school of East-Asian students (Chinese in particular) and the related didactical complexity rising from the contemporary presence of Western and non Western cultural heritages, discusses some historical, epistemological and linguistic aspects of Chinese culture and the related Shuxue (Mathematics) education. These were presented to Italian teachers and educators during a training course organized by the authors with the aim of answering teachers’ needs (K-12) for training about the didactical problematic of teaching in multicultural milieu (in particular with Chinese students). The laboratory activities designed and implemented in an a…
Pharmacogenomic determination of genes associated with sensitivity or resistance of tumor cells to curcumin and curcumin derivatives
2010
Curcuma longa L. has long been used as a medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine against abdominal disorders. Its active constituent curcumin has anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive and cytotoxic properties. In the present investigation, we have analyzed the cytotoxic activity of curcumin and four derivatives. Among these compounds, ethoxycurcumintrithiadiazolaminomethylcarbonate was the most cytotoxic one. The curcumin-type compounds were not cross-resistant to standard anticancer drugs and were not involved in ATP-binding cassette transporter-mediated multidrug resistance. A combined approach of messenger RNA-based microarray profiling, COMPARE analyses and signaling pathway analys…
Biotransformation of caffeine and theophylline in mammalian cell lines genetically engineered for expression of single cytochrome P450 isoforms
1992
Primary steps in the metabolism of caffeine and theophylline are cleavage of methyl groups and/or hydroxylation at position 8, mediated by cytochromes P450. V79 Chinese hamster cells genetically engineered for stable expression of single forms of rat cytochromes P450IA1, P450IA2 and P450IIBI and human P450IA2 and rat liver epithelial cells expressing murine P450IA2 were used to overcome problems arising in the proper allocation of metabolic pathways to specific isoforms by conventional techniques. These cell lines were exposed to caffeine and/or theophylline, and concentrations of metabolites formed in the medium were determined by HPLC. Caffeine was metabolized by human, rat and murine P45…
Applications of stable V79-derived cell lines expressing rat cytochromes P4501A1, 1A2, and 2B1.
1992
1. Chinese hamster V79-derived cell lines, stably expressing cytochromes P4501A1, 1A2, and 2B1 activities, were constructed by genetic engineering in continuation of our work to establish a battery of V79 derived cell lines designed to study the metabolism of xenobiotics. 2. Cell lines XEM1 and XEM2, expressing cytochrome P4501A1, were capable of the O-dealkylation of 7-ethoxycoumarin and the hydroxylation of benzo[a]pyrene. 3. Cell lines XEMd.MZ and XEMd.NH, expressing P4501A2, were shown to hydroxylate 17 beta-estradiol and 2-aminofluorene. 4. Cell line SD1, expressing cytochrome P4502B1, was able to hydroxylate testosterone stereo- and regio-specifically at the 16 alpha and 16 beta posit…
Determination of DNA single strand breaks and selective DNA amplification by N-nitrodimethylamine and analogs, and estimation of the indicator cells'…
1986
N-nitrodimethylamine is metabolized oxidatively to N-nitrohydroxymethylmethylamine, which decomposes to yield formaldehyde and N-nitromethylamine. All four compounds and N-nitromethylamine were tested for their ability to induce DNA single strand breaks in hepatocytes and in SV 40-transformed Chinese hamster embryo cell lines. Only the two monoalkylnitramines were positive. They induced single strand breaks in hepatocytes, but were not effective in the other cells. Formaldehyde and N-nitrohydroxymethylmethylamine were toxic to the cells. None of the compounds tested was able to induce selective DNA amplification in the two transformed cell lines. Enzymes involved in drug metabolism were ass…
The high rate of endoreduplication in the repair deficient CHO mutant EM9 parallels a reduced level of methylated deoxycytidine in DNA
2008
It has been recently proposed that hypomethylation of DNA induced by 5-azacytidine (5-azaC) leads to reduced chromatid decatenation that ends up in endoreduplication, most likely due to a failure in topo II function [S. Mateos, I. Domínguez, N. Pastor, G. Cantero, F. Cortés, The DNA demethylating 5-azaC induces endoreduplication in cultured Chinese hamster cells, Mutat. Res. 578 (2005) 33-42]. The Chinese hamster mutant cell line EM9 has a high spontaneous frequency of endoreduplication as compared to its parental line AA8. In order to see if this is related to the degree of DNA methylation, we have investigated the basal levels of both endpoints in AA8 and EM9, as well as the effect of ext…
Modulation of Base Excision Repair Alters Cellular Sensitivity to UVA1 but not to UVB¶
2007
Abstract Oxidative DNA damage has been implicated in some of the biological properties of UVA but so far not in the acute photosensitivity or cellular sensitivity. In contrast to pyrimidine dimers, oxidative DNA damage is predominantly processed by base excision repair (BER). In order to further clarify the role of oxidative DNA damage and its repair in the acute cellular response to UV light, we studied UVA1 and UVB sensitivities in three different cell model systems with modified BER. 8-Oxoguanine-DNA-glycosylase 1–/– (OGG1–/–) mouse embryonal fibroblasts and human fibroblasts in which BER was inhibited by incubation with methoxyamine were hypersensitive to UVA1, in particular to low dose…
