Cardiovascular events are important co-morbidities in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Tristetraprolin (TTP) regulates pro-inflammatory processes through mRNA destabilization and therefore TTP-deficient mice (TTP(-/-) mice) develop a chronic inflammation resembling human rheumatoid arthritis. We used this mouse model to evaluate molecular signaling pathways contributing to the enhanced atherosclerotic risk in chronic inflammatory diseases. Background Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an increased risk for cardiovascular events (CVE). Uraemic dyslipidaemia, which is characterized by low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and elevated triglycerides' levels, may contribute to this elevated cardiovascular risk. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) lowers HDL-C by transferring cholesterol esters to LDL and VLDL particles. Farnesoid X receptor activation increases cholesteryl ester transfer protein expression in humans and transgenic mice

International audience; Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) activity results in a proatherogenic lipoprotein profile. In cholestatic conditions, farnesoid X receptor (FXR) signaling by bile acids (BA) is activated and plasma HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels are low. This study tested the hypothesis that FXR-mediated induction of CETP contributes to this phenotype. Effects of Chitosan on Plasma Lipids and Lipoproteins

Chitosan can favorably modulate plasma lipids, but the available data are not conclusive. We evaluated the effect of chitosan on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in 28 patients with plasma triglyceride levels &gt;150 mg/dL (mean age: 63 ± 12 years), not taking other lipid-lowering agents. All patients received a chitosan derived from fungal mycelium (Xantonet, Bromatech, Italy) at a fixed dose of 125 mg/d in addition to their current medications for 4 months.
