Immune Response to Gelatin- and Collagen-Impregnated Aortic Dacron Grafts

1996

Dacron grafts are very common in vascular surgery. Primarily sealed grafts have been available for ten years. These improve handling and reduce intraoperative blood loss. Despite a widespread use all over the world, it has as yet not been clarified whether coating (sealing) substances might cause an immune response, especially in situations of fever or other unexplained events in the postoperative course after graft implantation. In this study, 37 patients with a gelatin-impregnated (Unigraft) and 33 with a collagen-impregnated (Hemashield) graft for aortic or aortoiliac replacement were compared. Serum samples were investigated for collagen antibodies at operation, one week and three mont…

A Nonlinear Circulatory Model for Artificial Heart Studies

1983

Animals with total artificial heart replacement (TAH) have survived for up to 9 months with manually controlled driving systems. A certain physiological control is provided by the animals intact peripheral regulation resulting in pathological venous hemodynamics, expressing the needs for a technical automatic control system, replacing the natural sympathetic stimulation and Starlings Law of the heart. A nonlinear dynamic mathematical model of the human cardiovascular system (CVSM) containing the systemic and pulmonary components was outlined and verified, which is employable to analyse the hemodynamic behaviour under normal and abnormal states. By modifying this model, assuming that cardiac…

Standardized Hemorrhagic Shock Induction Guided by Cerebral Oximetry and Extended Hemodynamic Monitoring in Pigs.

2019

Hemorrhagic shock ranks among the main reasons for severe injury-related death. The loss of circulatory volume and oxygen carriers can lead to an insufficient oxygen supply and irreversible organ failure. The brain exerts only limited compensation capacities and is particularly at high risk of severe hypoxic damage. This article demonstrates the reproducible induction of life-threatening hemorrhagic shock in a porcine model by means of calculated blood withdrawal. We titrate shock induction guided by near-infrared spectroscopy and extended hemodynamic monitoring to display systemic circulatory failure, as well as cerebral microcirculatory oxygen depletion. In comparison to similar models tha…

Adenosine activates a potassium conductance in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle.

1983

Adenosine shortens the action potential and diminishes the force of contraction in guinea-pig left atria. These effects may be brought about by the activation of a potassium conductance. This assumption is supported by voltage clamp and 42K release experiments.

Failure of opioids to affect excitation and contraction in isolated ventricular heart muscle

1989

The opioid agonists morphine (selective for mu-receptors) and ethylketocyclazocine (selective for kappa-receptors), at concentrations evoking strong effects in neuronal structures, did not significantly affect the configuration of the intracellularly recorded action potential and the force of contraction in ventricular heart muscle isolated from guinea pigs, rabbits and man. These results suggest that any changes of heart functions in vivo in response to opioid-like drugs are probably not mediated postsynaptically at the myocardial cell membrane but rather presynaptically, influencing the release of noradrenaline and/or acetylcholine from the nerve terminals.

Analysis of Rabbit Vascular Responses to DBI, an Ingol Derivative Isolated from Euphorbia canariensis

1997

Abstract We have analysed the effects of 7,12-O-diacetyl-8-O-benzoil-2,3-diepiingol (DBI), an ingol derivative isolated from E. canariensis, on isometric tension developed by isolated rabbit basilar and carotid arteries. Concentration-response curves to DBI (10−8 - 3 × 10−5 m) were obtained cumulatively in both arteries at resting tension and active tone (KC1, 50 mm). At resting tension, DBI induced a concentration-dependent contraction, which was not inhibited in Ca2+-free medium. H7 (1-(5-isoquinoline sulphonyl)-2-methylpiperazine dichloride) (10−4 m) inhibited the DBI-induced contraction both in basilar and in carotid arteries. Calmidazolium (10−4 m) inhibited the maximum contraction of …

Isolated human chorionic vascular reactivity: Technical considerations for fresh preparations

1998

1. 1. Sixty chorionic vascular rings from normal term placentas were immersed in an organ bath for isometric tension recording to study (A) the contractile response to 120 mM of potassium chloride (KCI) after adjustment and equilibration to 1–5 g of passive tension; and (B) the concentration-response curve to KCI after adjustment and equilibration to the optimal passive tension. 2. 2. Adjustment to 4 g of passive tension elicited the maximal (P<0.007) and the latest (P<0.006) KCl-induced contraction among arterial rings. Venous rings showed the greatest contraction when adjusted to 3 g, but the differences were not significant except when compared to 1 g of passive tension (P<0.03). 3. 3. T…

Erfassung hämodynamischer Parameter bei Patienten mit chronischer thromboembolischer pulmonaler Hypertonie mittels MRT vor und nach Thrombendarteriek…

2003

Purpose: To evaluate the potential of MRI to grade cardiac impairment and pulmonary hypertension in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) in comparison with invasive pressure measurements before and after surgery. Materials and Methods: We examined 35 patients with CTEPH before and after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE). For assessment of hemodynamics, velocity-encoded segmented GE-sequences (pulmonary arteries and ascending aorta) and segmented cine GE-sequences along the short axis of the heart were performed. The analysis comprised calculation of ejection fractions, peak velocities, mean pulmonary arterial flow and vessel diameter. 10 volunteers served …

Paradoxical attenuation of leukocyte rolling in response to ischemia- reperfusion and extracorporeal blood circulation in inflamed tissue.

2005

In contrast to acute preparations such as the exteriorized mesentery or the cremaster muscle, chronically instrumented chamber models allow one to study the microcirculation under “physiological” conditions, i.e., in the absence of trauma-induced leukocyte rolling along the venular endothelium. To underscore the importance of studying the naive microcirculation, we implanted titanium dorsal skinfold chambers in hamsters and used intravital fluorescence microscopy to study venular leukocyte rolling in response to ischemia-reperfusion injury or extracorporeal blood circulation. The experiments were performed in chambers that fulfilled all well-established criteria for a physiological microcir…

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension from the perspective of patients with pulmonary embolism

2018

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but feared long-term complication of acute pulmonary embolism (PE), although CTEPH may occur in patients with no history of symptomatic venous thromboembolism. It represents the most severe presentation of the so-called 'post-PE syndrome', a phenomenon of permanent functional limitations after PE caused by deconditioning after PE or ventilatory or circulatory impairment as a result of unresolved pulmonary artery thrombi. Because the post-PE syndrome may occur in up to 50% of PE survivors, and CTEPH tends to have an insidious and non-specific clinical presentation, CTEPH is often not diagnosed or diagnosed after a very long dela…
