Species cohesion despite extreme inbreeding in a social spider.

2011

Colonial social spiders experience extreme inbreeding and highly restricted gene flow between colonies; processes that question the genetic cohesion of geographically separated populations and which could imply multiple origins from predecessors with limited gene flow. We analysed species cohesion and the potential for long-distance dispersal in the social spider Stegodyphus dumicola by studying colony structure in eastern South Africa and the cohesion between this population and Namibian populations previously published. Data from both areas were (re)analysed for historic demographic parameters. Eastern South African S. dumicola were closely related to an east Namibian lineage, showing coh…

Co-occurrence of discourse markers in Catalan and Spanish oral narrative

2009

The analysis of oral narratives in Catalan and Spanish highlights the frequency, variety and importance of co-occurring discourse markers. A detailed study of the formal aspects of co-occurrences leads to differentiating three degrees of integration of markers: juxtaposition, addition and composition. These types can be related to dominant category patterns, positions in the narrative and also functional domains (namely, propositional, structural and modal). The analysis and extensive exemplification suggests that co-occurrences based on the addition and composition of markers behave and contribute to discourse cohesion in a special way.

Lexical cohesion revisited. A combined corpus and systemic-functional analysis

2018

In this chapter I argue for a refinement of the classic SFL approach to lexical cohesion. First, a literature overview is provided in which key principles and related categories are examined. In addition, the connection of cohesion and discourse co-herence is addressed and an overview is provided of the wide range of applications that the former has in such fields as genre studies, language teaching and learning, psycholinguistics and computational linguistics, among others. The core SFL models of cohesion are then revisited in order to propose a modified taxonomy of lexical co-hesion, involving five distinct types (repetition, synonymy, opposition, inclusion and association) that are cross…

Aspects discursifs dans les contes d’ Edgar Allan Poe et leurs traductions en français et en espagnol

2012

It is known that the translation exercise has always been important in the development of the human knowledge. That is why we have considered interesting to analyse the French and Spanish translations of Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales. The aim of this contribution is the study of temporal cohesion in a cognitive approach. We have chosen three Tales of Edar Allan Poe: Berenice, The Oval Portrait, and The Masque of the Red Death. In a first step we’ll find the three markers still, again and then among the three Tales and in a second step we will compare the translations (French and Spanish ) of these markers with the original text. We think that these markers are polysemous and that they have a prot…

Cohesive explicitness and explicitation in an English-German translation corpus

2007

Explicitness or implicitness as assumed properties of translated texts and other texts in multilingual communication have for some time been the object of speculation and, at a later stage, of more systematic research in linguistics and translation studies. This paper undertakes an investigation of explicitness/implicitness and related phenomena of translated texts on the level of cohesion. A corpus-based research architecture, embedded in an empirical research methodology, will be outlined, and first results and possible explanations will be discussed. The paper starts with a terminological clarification of the concepts of ‘explicitness’ and ‘explicitation’ in terms of dependent variables …

Els mecanismes de referència en la interfície gramàtica-discurs. Cohesió, coherència i cognició

2018

The development of narrative productivity, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion and event content in four- to eight-year-old Finnish children

2013

This study focuses on the development of narrative structure and the relationship between narrative productivity and event content. A total of 172 Finnish children aged between four and eight participated. Their picture-elicited narrations were analysed for productivity, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion and event content. Each measure showed a developmental trend. Concerning consecutive age groups, significant differences were observed between four- and five-year-olds in productivity and event content and between five- and six-year-olds in referential cohesion. Multiple regression analysis showed that the relationship between productivity and event content was important, and espe…

Encapsulació i estructura informativa en el debat parlamentari. Una anàlisi contrastiva (català – espanyol – anglès)

2016

Parliamentary debate (PD) as a specific genre of parliamentary discourse exhibits a hybrid nature: part oral and part written discourse. It is performed orally, but planned ahead and formal. From the point of view of lexical cohesion, encapsulation by means of abstract and unspecific nouns (e.g. factor reason) is an indicator of the informative density and the underlying written natureof PD.With the tools provided by Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics, this paper aims at describing and characterizing cross-linguistically lexical encapsulation’s potential to define the information struc-ture of PD. In this regard, encapsulation is analyzed in relation to the notions of topic and fo…

The impact of process variables on outcomes in a Psychodynamic long term group psychotherapy: A single case study.

2012

Several researches on Group psychotherapy attested the mediating action of some aspects of the group process on the outcome(Martin, Garske & Davis,2000; Tasca, Illing, Ogrodniczuk, Joyce,2009; Burlingame, Mc Clendon & Alonso,2011). This study evaluates the development of the Group process in a semi open, long-term therapeutic group with the aim to identify which specific factors of group therapy (Cohesion, Alliance, and Session Impact) are responsible of the change. The group is composed by 11 patients with DSM I and II Axes diagnosis that have been assessed during 50 session. Outcome Instruments: SCL-90 (Derogatis,1983), OQ-45.2(Lambert, Burlingame,1996;Lo Coco, Prestano, Gullo, Di Stefano…

Group cohesion in group-based personal practice

2021

AbstractBackgroundPersonal practice (PP) is an integral component of many psychotherapy training programmes. It aims to promote personal and professional growth and is often conducted in a group format (g-PP). Group cohesion is one of the most researched mechanisms in group psychotherapy, but has rarely been studied in the context of g-PP.Aims and methodThis exploratory study examines the associations between cohesion, satisfaction with g-PP, its impact on personal and professional development, and theoretical orientation in a sample of n = 329 German psychotherapy trainees. Cohesion was assessed with the group questionnaire (GQ-D; Positive Bonding, Positive Working, Negative Relationship).…
