Improvement of solubility and biocompatibility of MnO based nanoparticles in aqueous solutions

2011

ABSTRACTMnO nanoparticles were surface modified using two different multifunctional polymers. By introducing a PEG group, the long term stability, MRI applicability and sterile filtration could be greatly improved. Furthermore, PEGylated MnO NPs were less toxic compared to non-PEGylated NPs. The results suggest that these nanoparticles are suitable for in vivo applications.

ChemInform Abstract: Carbohydrate Nanocarriers in Biomedical Applications: Functionalization and Construction

2015

The specific targeting of either tumor cells or immune cells in vivo by carefully designed and appropriately surface-functionalized nanocarriers may become an effective therapeutic treatment for a variety of diseases. Carbohydrates, which are prominent biomolecules, have shown their outstanding ability in balancing the biocompatibility, stability, biodegradability, and functionality of nanocarriers. The recent applications of sugar (mono/oligosaccharides and/or polysaccharides) for the development of nanomedicines are summarized in this review, including the application of carbohydrates for the surface-functionalization of various nanocarriers and for the construction of the nanocarrier its…

From Biocompatible to Biodegradable: Poly(Ethylene Glycol)s with Predetermined Breaking Points

2013

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is the gold standard polymer for biomedical applications. PEG is known for its biocompatibility and antifouling properties and is widely used for bioconjugation. However, like other synthetic polymers in the field, PEG is not biodegradable, limiting its use for parenteral formulations and protein conjugation to a molecular weight range with a specific upper limit (commonly 40–60 kDa) to avoid polyether accumulation in human tissue. For these biomedical applications, but also for other purposes such as cleavable hydrogels and templates for porous membranes, several routes for the insertion of in-chain biocleavable moieties, such as acetals or disulfides, into PEG …

A Study of Polycarbonate-Liquid Crystal Polymer Blends

1992

BThe morphologican and mechanical properties of blends of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) with a wholly aromatic liquid crystal copolyesteramide (Vectra-B) are discussed with reference to the conditions used for their preparation. The blends made by extrusion behave as mixtures of incompatible polymers. THe behaviour of the blends prepared in a batch mixer depends strongly on mixing time. A slight decrease in the mechanical properties accompanies the morphological changes associated with a progressive improvement in the compatibility of the two polymers

PHEA‐PLLA: A New Polymer Blend For Tissue Engineering Applications

2011

One of most important features that a material should have in order to be utilized for tissue engineering applications is its biocompatibility and its chemical surface. These properties are required for a high degree of cell adhesion on the scaffold. Poly‐L‐lactid acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible synthetic polymer approved by the Food and Drug Administration for human clinical applications. It has been largely employed, in the last years, as a constituent of surgical and implantable devices. PHEA is a biocompatible water‐soluble synthetic polymer, with a protein‐like structure, whose use as a drug carrier and as starting material for many other biomedical and pharmaceutical applications has b…

Silica-coated Au@ZnO Janus particles and their stability in epithelial cells

2020

Multicomponent particles have emerged in recent years as new compartmentalized colloids with two sides of different chemistry or polarity that have opened up a wide field of unique applications in medicine, biochemistry, optics, physics and chemistry. A drawback of particles containing a ZnO hemisphere is their low stability in biological environment due to the amphoteric properties of Zn2+. Therefore we have synthesized monodisperse Au@ZnO Janus particles by seed-mediated nucleation and growth whose ZnO domain was coated selectively with a thin SiO2 layer as a protection from the surrounding environment that imparts stability in aqueous media while the Au domain remained untouched. The thi…

Amino-functional polyethers: versatile, stimuli-responsive polymers

2020

Due to the increasing demand for “smart” materials and systems e.g. for actuators, microvalves, but also for drug delivery, electrooptical devices and many other applications, multi-stimuli responsive materials such as amino-functional polymers are attracting increasing attention in recent years. The hydrophilic character and excellent biocompatibility of the polyether backbone, in combination with multi-stimuli responsive amine moieties, offer intriguing opportunities for a wide range of applications, such as bioconjugation, stimuli-responsive drug delivery and surface modification. Furthermore, the controlled introduction of amino-functionalities at the polyether backbone via copolymeriza…

In situ gel forming graft copolymers of a polyaspartamide and polylactic acid: Preparation and characterization

2008

Abstract In situ gel forming systems have been prepared by linking polylactic acid (PLA) to a water soluble and polyfunctional polymer, such as α,β-poly( N -2-hydroxyethyl)- d , l -aspartamide (PHEA). Three graft copolymers PHEA–PLA with a different derivatization degree in PLA, have been synthesized and characterized. PHEA–PLA graft copolymer with the highest amount in PLA has been used to prepare solutions in organic solvents able to give rise to gel-like matrices when injected into phosphate buffered saline solution. The chemical degradation of these gels has been evaluated and in vitro tests have been performed to evaluate the cell compatibility of the hydrolysis products. The possibili…

Glycopolymer Functionalization of Engineered Spider Silk Protein-based Materials for Improved Cell Adhesion

2014

Silk protein-based materials are promising biomaterials for application as tissue scaffolds, due to their processability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The preparation of films composed of an engineered spider silk protein (eADF4(C16)) and their functionalization with glycopolymers are described. The glycopolymers bind proteins found in the extracellular matrix, providing a biomimetic coating on the films that improves cell adhesion to the surfaces of engineered spider silk films. Such silk-based materials have potential as coatings for degradable implantable devices.
