Thermo-responsive hydrogels from cellulose-based polyelectrolytes and catanionic vesicles for biomedical application.

In this study, negatively charged catanionic vesicles/hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose polymers thermo-responsive hydrogels have been fabricated. Vesicular aggregates were found to act as multifunctional junctions for networking of modified-cellulose water solutions. The contributions of the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions were evaluated by changing either vesicles composition or the polymer hydrophobic substitution. Thermal-induced size and lamellarity of hydrogel-enclosed vesicles were detected, with further polygonal shape changes induced by cellulose-based polymer addition. The original concept of mechanical fatigue was linked to the failure of structures and was treated at first within the framework of Fracture Mechanics. Models developed to explain this phenomenon must therefore be able to be applied to structures: changing the structure means changes to the model and its identification. It is therefore judicious to develop models capable of treating both the damage processes and also able to be used within a local framework: to this end a method based on Damage Mechanics seems appropriate. Converting p-terphenyl into a novel organo-catalyst for LED-driven energy and electron transfer photoreactions in water.

p-Terphenyl is a potent photoredox catalyst under UV-irradiation. Aiming for more sustainable reaction conditions, we added two sulfonate groups to this key structure to achieve water solubility and incorporated an SO2-bridge thereby shifting the absorption spectrum towards the visible. The resulting photocatalyst shows unexpected triplet reactivity in several test reactions.

Abstract High surface area pure mesoporous aluminum-phosphorus oxide-based derivatives have been synthesized through an S+I− surfactant-assisted cooperative mechanism by means of a one-pot preparative procedure from aqueous solution and starting from aluminum atrane complexes and phosphoric and/or phosphorous acids. Molybdenum pentachloride combines a strong Lewis acid character with an unusually high oxidation potential creating a powerful reagent for oxidative transformations. Since the oxidative coupling reaction of aryls is induced at an extraordinarily high reaction rate, a variety of labile groups, e.g. iodo, tert-alkyl, etc., are tolerated on the aromatic core. Furthermore, the co-formed molybdenum salts can either be exploited for template effects to obtain uncommon geometries in a preferred manner, or redox-play starts after aqueous workup. Therefore MoCl(5) represents a unique and easily available reagent.
