Ultrafast antiferromagnetic switching in NiO induced by spin transfer torques

2020

NiO is a prototypical antiferromagnet with a characteristic resonance frequency in the THz range. From atomistic spin dynamics simulations that take into account the crystallographic structure of NiO, and in particular a magnetic anisotropy respecting its symmetry, we describe antiferromagnetic switching at THz frequency by a spin transfer torque mechanism. Sub-picosecond S-state switching between the six allowed stable spin directions is found for reasonably achievable spin currents, like those generated by laser induced ultrafast demagnetization. A simple procedure for picosecond writing of a six-state memory is described, thus opening the possibility to speed up current logic of electron…

A Composite Phononic Crystal Design for Quasiparticle Lifetime Enhancement in Kinetic Inductance Detectors

2019

A nanoscale phononic crystal filter (reflector) is designed for a kinetic inductance detector where the reflection band is matched to the quasiparticle recombination phonons with the aim to increase quasiparticle lifetime in the superconducting resonator. The inductor is enclosed by a 1 um wide phononic crystal membrane section with two simple hole patterns that each contain a partial spectral gap for various high frequency phonon modes. The phononic crystal is narrow enough for low frequency thermal phonons to propagate unimpeded. With 3D phonon scattering simulations over a 40 dB attenuation in transmitted power is found for the crystal, which was previously estimated to give a lifetime e…

A monte carlo study of dose rate distribution around the specially asymmetric CSM3-a 137Cs source.

2001

The CSM3 137Cs type stainless-steel encapsulated source is widely used in manually afterloaded low dose rate brachytherapy. A specially asymmetric source, CSM3-a, has been designed by CIS Bio International (France) substituting the eyelet side seed with an inactive material in the CSM3 source. This modification has been done in order to allow a uniform dose level over the upper vaginal surface when this `linear' source is inserted at the top of the dome vaginal applicators. In this study the Monte Carlo GEANT3 simulation code, incorporating the source geometry in detail, was used to investigate the dosimetric characteristics of this special CSM3-a 137Cs brachytherapy source. The absolute do…

Depth-dose measurement corrections for the surface electronic brachytherapy beams of an Esteya® unit: a Monte Carlo study

2020

Abstract Three different correction factors for measurements with the parallel-plate ionization chamber PTW T34013 on the Esteya electronic brachytherapy unit have been investigated. This chamber type is recommended by AAPM TG-253 for depth-dose measurements in the 69.5 kV x-ray beam generated by the Esteya unit. Monte Carlo simulations using the PENELOPE-2018 system were performed to determine the absorbed dose deposited in water and in the chamber sensitive volume at different depths with a Type A uncertainty smaller than 0.1%. Chamber-to-chamber differences have been explored performing measurements using three different chambers. The range of conical applicators available, from 10 to 30…

From nuclei to micro-structure in colloidal crystallization: Investigating intermediate length scales by small angle laser light scattering.

2014

Hard sphere suspensions are well recognized model systems of statistical physics and soft condensed matter. We here investigate the temporal evolution of the immediate environment of nucleating and growing crystals and/or their global scale distribution using time resolved Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS). Simultaneously performed Bragg scattering (BS) measurements provide an accurate temporal gauging of the sequence of events. We apply this approach to studies of re-crystallization in several different shear molten hard sphere and attractive hard sphere samples with the focus being on the diversity of observable signal shapes and their change in time. We demonstrate that depending on th…

Evaluation of the Performance of Published Point Defect Parameter Sets in Cone and Body Phase of a 300 mm Czochralski Silicon Crystal

2021

Prediction and adjustment of point defect (vacancies and self-interstitials) distribution in silicon crystals is of utmost importance for microelectronic applications. The simulation of growth processes is widely applied for process development and quite a few different sets of point defect parameters have been proposed. In this paper the transient temperature, thermal stress and point defect distributions are simulated for 300 mm Czochralski growth of the whole crystal including cone and cylindrical growth phases. Simulations with 12 different published point defect parameter sets are compared to the experimentally measured interstitial–vacancy boundary. The results are evaluated for stand…

Improved Temperature Coefficient Modeling through the Recombination Parameter $\gamma$

2020

This study presents an injection dependent numerical model relating Shocldey-Read-Hall defect parameters in crystalline silicon with the recombination parameter $\gamma$ . We demonstrate how the model can be used to predict $\gamma$ for various single level defects. Additionally, we show that $\gamma$ can be significantly influenced by the injection level, in contrast to what is commonly assumed. The injection dependence is found to correlate with the temperature sensitivity of the Shocldey-Read-Hall lifetime. Finally, we demonstrate that the model can be used to predict the temperature coefficient of the open circuit voltage without the use of a temperature dependent measurement, enabling …

Assessment of a New Analytical Expression for the Maximum-Power Point Voltage with Series Resistance

2021

This work compares a recently developed analytical expression for the maximum-power point voltage with experimental data, to test its usability for crystalline silicon solar cells. The experimental data covers measurements from 18 multicrystalline silicon solar cells with different bulk resistivities and cell architectures. We show that the expression is able to predict the maximum power obtainable by the measured cells with relative discrepancies below 1%. Additionally, we compare the accuracy of this new expression with two already existing models.

Classical nucleation theory for the crystallization kinetics in sheared liquids

2019

While statistical mechanics provides a comprehensive framework for the understanding of equilibrium phase behavior, predicting the kinetics of phase transformations remains a challenge. Classical nucleation theory (CNT) provides a thermodynamic framework to relate the nucleation rate to thermodynamic quantities such as pressure difference and interfacial tension through the nucleation work necessary to spawn critical nuclei. However, it remains unclear whether such an approach can be extended to the crystallization of driven melts that are subjected to mechanical stresses and flows. Here, we demonstrate numerically for hard spheres that the impact of simple shear on the crystallization rate…

X-Ray CT analyses, models and numerical simulations – a comparison with common analytical methods of an experimental CO2</s…

2016

Abstract. An essential part of the collaborative research project H2STORE ("hydrogen to store"), which is founded by the German government, was a comparison of various analytical methods to characterize reservoir sandstones from different stratigraphic units. In this context Permian, Triassic and Tertiary reservoir sandstones were analysed. Rock core materials, provided by RWE Gasspeicher GmbH (Dortmund), GFD Suez E&P Deutschland GmbH (Lingen), E.ON Gas Storage GmbH (Essen) and RAG Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft (Wien), was processed by different laboratory techniques; thin sections were prepared, rock fragments were crushed, cubes of 1 cm edge length and plugs of 5 cm in leng…
