B-Scan image analysis for position and shape defect definition in plates

2016

Definition of size, shape and location of defects into a mechanical component is of extreme importance in the manufacturing industry in general and particularly in high-tech applications, and in applications that can become dangerous due to the structural failure of mechanical components. In this paper, a laser-UT system has been used to define position and shape of internal defects in aluminum plates. An infrared pulsed laser is used to generate ultrasonic waves in a point of the plate and a CW laser interferometer is used as receiver to acquire the out-of-plane displacements due to the ultrasonic waves in another point of the plate. The method consists of acquiring a B-Scan map on which s…

A procedure for slicing and characterizing soft heterogeneous and irregular-shaped tissue

2020

Abstract This paper presents a slicing technique useful to prepare precise and repeatable samples from organs which are irregularly shaped and highly heterogeneous for mechanical testing and advanced microscopy observation. The suggested technique does not seem to influence the internal microstructure and it is employed here for testing specimens cut from different region of the meniscal tissue. Fast Fourier Transform analysis is used to quantify characteristic features of the microstructure (collagen fibers orientation, pore size) after slicing prior mechanical testing. Uniaxial (relaxation) tests are performed on dog-bone meniscal samples. Stress relaxation testing results on samples cut …

Optimization of physicochemical and optical properties of nanocrystalline TiO 2 deposited on porous silicon by metal-organic chemical vapor depositio…

2020

International audience; Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is very employed in solar cells due to its interesting physicochemical and optical properties allowing high device performances. Considering the extension of applications in nanotechnologies, nanocrystalline TiO2 is very promising for nanoscale components. In this work, nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films were successfully deposited on porous silicon (PSi) by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique at temperature of 550°C for different periods of times: 5, 10 and 15 min. The objective was to optimize the physicochemical and optical properties of the TiO2/PSi films dedicated for photovoltaic application. The structural, morphologi…

Validation of mathematical model for CZ process using small-scale laboratory crystal growth furnace

2018

The present material is focused on the modelling of small-scale laboratory NaCl-RbCl crystal growth furnace. First steps towards fully transient simulations are taken in the form of stationary simulations that deal with the optimization of material properties to match the model to experimental conditions. For this purpose, simulation software primarily used for the modelling of industrial-scale silicon crystal growth process was successfully applied. Finally, transient simulations of the crystal growth are presented, giving a sufficient agreement to experimental results.

SiC MOSFET vs SiC/Si Cascode short circuit robustness benchmark

2019

Abstract Nowadays, MOSFET SiC semiconductors short circuit capability is a key issue. SiC/Si Cascodes are compound semiconductors that, in some aspects, show a similar MOSFET behaviour. No interlayer dielectric insulation suggests, in theory, Cascode JFETs as more robust devices. The purpose of this paper is to compare the drift and degradation of two commercial devices static parameters by exposing them to different levels of repetitive 1.5 μs short-circuit campaigns at 85% of its breakdown voltage. Short-circuit time has been set experimentally, and longer times result in catastrophic failure of MOSFET devices due to over self-heating. For this purpose, pre- and post-test short circuit ch…

Experimental and numerical investigation of laboratory crystal growth furnace for the development of model-based control of CZ process

2019

Abstract The presented study is focused on laboratory Czochralski crystal growth experiments and their mathematical modelling. The developed small-scale CZ crystal growth furnace is described as well as the involved automation systems: crystal radius detection by image recognition, temperature sensors, adjustable heater power and crystal pull rate. The CZ-Trans program is used to model the experimental results – transient, 2D axisymmetric simulation software primarily used for modelling of the industrial-scale silicon crystal growth process. Poor agreement with the experimental results is reached; however, the proven ability to perform affordable, small-scale experiments and successfully mo…

Deviation of H− beam extraction simulation model

2018

Negative hydrogen ion source extraction system development is dependent on accurate and fast simulation methods for modelling the behaviour of ion and electron beams. Traditionally this type of work has been done using ray-tracing extraction codes, such as IBSimu. The plasma extraction model in IBSimu has been observed to under-estimate the charge density near the plasma sheath, leading to incorrect prediction of the current at which the system produces the optimum emittance. It is suspected that this deviation results from the approximations made by the model, neglecting the magnetic field and collisional effects near the sheath region. Results and comparisons to simulations are presented …

State-space formulation of scalar Preisach hysteresis model for rapid computation in time domain

2015

A state-space formulation of classical scalar Preisach model (CSPM) of hysteresis is proposed. The introduced state dynamics and memory interface allow to use the state equation, which is rapid in calculation, instead of the original Preisach equation. The main benefit of the proposed modeling approach is the reduced computational effort which requires only a single integration over the instantaneous line segment in the Preisach plane. Numerical evaluations of the computation time and model accuracy are provided in comparison to the CSPM which is taken as a reference model.

Integral imaging with Fourier-plane recording

2017

Integral Imaging is well known for its capability of recording both the spatial and the angular information of threedimensional (3D) scenes. Based on such an idea, the plenoptic concept has been developed in the past two decades, and therefore a new camera has been designed with the capacity of capturing the spatial-angular information with a single sensor and after a single shot. However, the classical plenoptic design presents two drawbacks, one is the oblique recording made by external microlenses. Other is loss of information due to diffraction effects. In this contribution report a change in the paradigm and propose the combination of telecentric architecture and Fourier-plane recordin…

Critical issues in the PD testing methodology for XLPE-insulated MV cables: An experimental case

2017

This paper describes some critical issues arising during the partial discharge (PD) testing of a 500m delivery length of an XLPE-insulated MV cable. At first, conventional PD measurements were performed on the whole length by using a standard acquisition system; PDs activity was detected, but the system allowed the operator to localize the PDs only on a length of 70 m. A visual inspection of this section highlighted the presence of an excoriation in the outer sheet. Aiming at a more accurate pin-pointing of the defect, more measurements were carried out in the proximity of the outer defect using a portable PD detection system. These measurements showed PDs activity, whose source was located…
