Anion Recognition by a Bioactive Diureidodecalin Anionophore: Solid-State, Solution, and Computational Studies

Recent work has identified a bis-(p-nitrophenyl)ureidodecalin anion carrier as a promising candidate for biomedical applications, showing good activity for chloride transport in cells yet almost no cytotoxicity. To underpin further development of this and related compounds, a detailed structural and binding investigation is reported. Crystal structures of the transporter as five solvates confirm the diaxial positioning of urea groups while revealing a degree of conformational flexibility. Structures of complexes with Cl−, Br−, NO3 −, SO4 2− and AcO−, supported by computational studies, show how the binding site can adapt to accommodate these anions. 1H NMR binding studies revealed exception…

Mitigating DDoS using weight‐based geographical clustering

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have for the last two decades been among the greatest threats facing the internet infrastructure. Mitigating DDoS attacks is a particularly challenging task as an attacker tries to conceal a huge amount of traffic inside a legitimate traffic flow. This article proposes to use data mining approaches to find unique hidden data structures which are able to characterize the normal traffic flow. This will serve as a mean for filtering illegitimate traffic under DDoS attacks. Modelling the dynamics of the students’ academic performance in the German region of the North Rhine-Westphalia: an epidemiological approach with unc…

Student academic underachievement is a concern of paramount importance in Europe, where around 15% of the students in the last high school courses do not achieve the minimum knowledge academic requirement. In this paper, we propose a model based on a system of differential equations to study the dynamics of the students academic performance in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia. This approach is supported by the idea that both, good and bad study habits, are a mixture of personal decisions and influence of classmates. This model allows us to forecast the student academic performance by means of confidence intervals over the next few years.

Teacher's reflections on experimenting with technology-enriched inquiry-based mathematics teaching with a preplanned teaching unit

Abstract According to previous studies, inquiry-based mathematics teaching enhances learning. However, teachers need support in implementing this type of teaching. In this study, a high school teacher was given a short preplanned inquiry-based mathematics teaching unit that included activities with GeoGebra. The teacher was interviewed after every lesson to explore her reflections after teaching. Emotions in E-Learning

This paper presents the results of an educational innovation in Higher Education, whose aim is to design and test a pedagogical model for e-learning. This paper has the main aim to identify and evaluate emotional factors related to e-learning by means of a survey research. The results show emotional well-being scores higher than wrong-being, identifying a range of emotions, which are related to different emotional states in e-learning. In addition, we present features of teachers’ and students’ virtual discourses in forums of discussion starting from types of educational interaction and kind of emotions related to certain settings of learning activity.
