Osteogenic potential of a biosilica-coated P(UDMA-co-MPS) copolymer

2020

A P(UDMA-co-MPS) copolymer was surface-functionalized through the polycondensation activity of the enzyme silicatein. The resulting biosilica coating significantly enhanced mineralization of osteoblastic cells, thereby revealing its osteogenic potential. Consequently, the functionalized copolymer may be explored as an alternative to conventionally used acrylics in applications where stable bone-material interfaces are required.

Sol–Gel Microcapsulation in Silica-Based Particles: A Comparative Study

2011

Comparison between the two main sol–gel/emulsion methods to prepare microparticles made of organosilica doped with a lipophilic molecule shows that entrapment only takes place starting from O/W emulsions. In this case, however, formation of spherical microcapsules, observed when the sol–gel polycondensation is carried out in a W/O microemulsion, does not take place.

Polymerizable Well-Defined Oligo(thiophene amide)s and their ROMP Block Copolymers

2009

We report the synthesis of conjugated thiophene amide oligomers that constitute a new class of chromophores with potential for optoelectronic applications. The synthesis of defined norbornene-substituted oligothiophene amides using conventional coupling chemistry is described. Their electronic properties depend on the degree of oligomerization as UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrate. A significant red shift in the spectra upon an increase in the oligomer length evidences conjugation of the thiophene rings via the amide linkages. ROMP of the norbornene-substituted oligomers gives homopolymers and block-copolymers with a solubilizing second block. The amphiphilic character of the …

Self-organization of porphyrin units induced by magnetic field during sol-gel polymerization

2007

The use of a magnetic field as a controlling factor during the hydrolysis-polycondensation of porphyrin precursors substituted by Si(OR)(3) groups, induces a self-organization of porphyrin moieties due to the stacking of these units in the hybrid material and this study also confirms the effect of the magnetic field in the nano- and micrometric organization during the kinetically controlled polycondensation process.

1992

The synthesis of a new type of combined polymers containing both disc- and rod-like mesogens is reported. The polyesters, having a triphenylene derivative as a discotic mesogen in the side group and azobenzene or biphenyl derivatives as rod-like mesogens in the main chain were characterized by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray scattering studies. The homopolymer 7 is highly crystalline, while the copolymer 8 is amorphous, both, however, do not form liquid-crystalline phases.

Synthesis of PP-LCP graft copolymers and their compatibilizing activity for PP/LCP blends

1998

The aim of this work was the synthesis of new graft copolymers consisting of polypropylene (PP) backbones and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) branches, to be used as compatibilizing agents for PP/LCP blends. The PP-g-LCP copolymers have been prepared by polycondensation of the monomers of a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester (SBH 1 : 1 : 2), that is, sebacic acid (S), 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl (B), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (H) in the mole ratio of 1 : 1 : 2, carried out in the presence of appropriate amounts of a commercial acrylic-acid-functionalized polypropylene (PPAA). The polycondensation products, referred to as COPP50 and COPP70, having a calculated PPAA concentration of 50 and…

Synthesis of Reactive Telechelic Polymers Based on Pentafluorophenyl Esters

2008

A diazo initiator and a chain transfer agent (CTA), both containing a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) activated ester, were synthesized. In a RAFT polymerization using the functionalized chain transfer agent (PFPCTA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), diethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate (DEGMA), poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) could successfully be polymerized into homopolymers and diblock copolymers with good control over molecular weight, very high conversions, and narrow molecular weight distributions. Polymers derived from the PFP-CTA possessed an activated ester at the R-end of the polymer chain, which could be reacted with amines…

Metalation and N-alkylation of some polyamides

1981

Totally N-substituted polyamides were synthesized starting from poly(2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylene terephthalamide) by metalation of the amide groups and subsequent reaction with several electrophiles. Polyamides of this structure are not available from terephthalic acid and the corresponding diamines by polycondensation. This N-alkylation reaction can be used for the synthesis of comb-like graft copolymers. The solubilitity and the thermal properties of these polyamide derivatives are described.

Polymides 3a and 3b with stiff-chains bearing trioxaoctyl or tetraoxaundecyl side chains were synthesized and characterized. The polycondensation was done with pyromellitic anhydride and N,N′-bis(1-imidazolylcarbonyl)-2,5-(1,4,7-trioxaoctyl)- or 2,5-(1,4,7,10-tetraoxaundecyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (2a or 2b). 3b, being sufficiently soluble, was characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The results of IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy prove the presence of the correct imide structure. In solid state 3a and 3b form layered structures with the side chains being in a disordered state.

1981

Polyamides 3 containing constant and definite numbers of oxyethylene units were prepared by condensation polymerization of suitable diamines and diesters, both of which containing oxyethylene units. The polymer structure was determined by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Almost all polymers are crystals melting at ≈ 40°C and show a complexation ability towards alkalimetal cations. It was also found that diesters containing oxyethylene units show a higher condensation rate than alkylene diesters, which is explained by an inductive effect of the ether oxygene. However, no remarkable difference in the condensation rate was found between diamines containing oxyethylene units and the corresponding al…
