Bile salt-stimulated lipase activity in human colostrum from mothers of infants of different gestational age and birthweight.

1987

. The bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL) activity was measured in milk collected at 3–4 days postpartum (colostrum) from 36 mothers divided into three groups according to gestational age and birthweight of their infants. BSSL activity changed with the length of gestation. Preterm colostrum presented a mean activity significantly higher than the term groups (small-for-gestational age and appropriate-for-gestational age) which had similar values. The ratio of BSSL activity to the estimated fat content was 6.33 in colostrum of mothers who delivered preterm and 4.20 in colostrum of both groups of term mothers. These data suggest that preterm colostrum has a higher fat digesting potential than t…

Elevated Protein Content and Prolyl 4-Hydroxylase Activity in Severely Degenerated Human Annulus Fibrosus

2000

Alterations involved with the intervertebral disc degeneration are partly well described, however, it is not so well known how collagen network is affected by the disease. We analyzed the rate of collagen biosynthesis (estimated by the enzymic activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase) and the level of hydroxylysylpyridinoline and lysylpyridinoline crosslinks both in normal (n=7) and degenerated (n=7) human annulus fibrosus. The activity of prolyl 4-hydroxylase was significantly increased in degenerated tissue. However, no significant changes in the collagen content or in the amount of hydroxylysylpyridinoline and lysylpyridinoline collagen crosslinks…

Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Evaluating Cancer Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

2021

Abstract Objectives This systematic review aims to evaluate the psychometric properties and the methodologic quality of studies describing smartphone-, tablet- or computer-based questionnaires for Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROM) evaluating symptoms in oncology and hematology patients. Data Sources A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Cinahl, Cuiden, Lilacs, and PsycINFO. Criteria for inclusion were (i) primary studies evaluating scales for symptoms assessment, (ii) developed in adult population (>18 years) with an oncology or hematology malignancy diagnosis, (iii) validations tested via phone or computer, and (iv) describing at least one psychometric prope…

Upgrading cytochrome P450 activity in HepG2 cells co-transfected with adenoviral vectors for drug hepatotoxicity assessment

2011

In a number of adverse drug reactions leading to hepatotoxicity, drug metabolism is thought to be involved by the generation of reactive metabolites from non-toxic drugs. The use of hepatoma cell lines, such as HepG2 cell line, for the evaluation of drug-induced hepatotoxicity is hampered by their low cytochrome P450 expression which makes impossible the study of the toxicity produced by bioactivable compounds. Genetically manipulated cells constitute promising tools for hepatotoxicity applications. HepG2 cells were simultaneously transfected with recombinant adenoviruses encoding CYP1A2, CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 to confer them drug-metabolic competence. Upgraded cells (Adv-HepG2) were highly able…

“I do those things to pass the time.”: Active ageing during fourth age

2021

Active ageing is a dominant but disputed discourse in the field of ageing. Since it is usually associated with the third age, this article will focus on the active ageing of older adults who need care and services, who are known as the fourth agers. Our data consists of interviews collected from 16 older adults. We analysed the data through content analysis that was guided by the Active Ageing Index (AAI) that is a measuring tool concerning active ageing. According to our results, active ageing during the fourth age can be understood through the lens of small actions and precarity. Although some actions had to be given up or modified, participants were active in various ways, and help from …

Apparent content curves: description and analytical applications. Resolution of binary mixtures

1992

The apparent content curves and their analytical applications are described. Basing on these curves a mathematical method, which permits the identification of the interfering component present in a binary mixture as well as the determination of the contents of both constituents, is proposed. The existence of considerable interaction coefficients is not an impediment for its application. Besides, the analyte contents in the mixture can be obtained without the use of standard interference solutions. The proposed procedure is applied to the analysis of mixtures of dyes with overlapping absorption spectra.

Effect of sodium to barium substitution on the space charge implementation in thermally poled glasses for nonlinear optical applications

2009

Thermally poled niobium borophosphate glasses in the system 0.55(0.95-y) NaPO{sub 3}+y/2 Ba(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}+0.05Na{sub 2}B{sub 4}O{sub 7})+0.45Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} were investigated for second order optical nonlinear (SON) properties. Bulk glasses were studied by Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, optical and dielectric measurements. The sodium to barium substitution does not lead to significant changes in optical properties, crystallization of glasses and coordination environment of polarizable niobium atoms. However, the ionic conductivity decreases drastically with the increase of barium concentration. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy has been used to determine the element distribution …

The influence of temperature on growth and proximate body composition of under yearling Lake Inari arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L.))

1997

The growth of underyearling Lake Inari arctic char was studied in groups of fish held at 5.9, 8.7, 12.1, 15.1 and 18.0 °C for 31 days. Growth rate increased with increasing water temperature, reached a peak at 15.1 °C, and then declined. The temperature influence on relative growth was expressed as a non-linear function. There were differences in body composition between fish reared at different temperatures: percentage water being highest at the lowest temperature, whereas energy content was highest in the fish held at the three highest temperatures. The body wet weight explained most of the variance in water content and it is suggested that this may also apply to other body constituents.

Antioxidant activity and fatty acids quantification in Sicilian purslane germplasm

2019

Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb in the family Portulacaceae. It is a nutritious vegetable with high antioxidant properties and, it is among the richest plant source of ω-3 fatty acids, as well as a rich source of ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, tocopherols and beta-carotene. In the present study, three purslane populations under different Mediterranean environmental conditions for two years, for future valorization as novel food sources of omega-3 fatty acids, were evaluated. In particular, biomorphological characteristics, total phenols and fatty acids content were determined. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay. The population…
