Abstract Objective: To compare two new generation antimuscarinics at their recommended doses for treatment of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB). Methods: A prospective, double blind, double-dummy, two-arm, parallel-group, 12-week study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of solifenacin 5 or 10mg and tolterodine extended release (ER) 4mg once daily in OAB patients. After 4 weeks of treatment patients had the option to request a dose increase but were dummied throughout as approved product labelling only allowed an increase for those on solifenacin. The metabolism of phenol and substituted phenols in zebra fish.

1. The metabolism of five phenols in zebra fish was studied after uptake from the medium. The results showed no qualitative differences to other Cyprinid fish species, only the oxidation rate seemed to be lower. 2. Phenyl glucuronide, phenyl sulphate, and quinol sulphate were identified as metabolites of phenol. 3. Identified metabolites of 2-cresol were 2-cresyl glucuronide, 2-cresyl sulphate, and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid in trace amounts. 4. Only the glucuronide and sulphate conjugates were detected as metabolites of 4-nitrophenol, 4-chlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol.

Urinaryp-cresol is elevated in young French children with autism spectrum disorder: a replication study

The aromatic compound p-cresol (4-methylphenol) has been found elevated in the urines of Italian autistic children up to 8 years of age. The present study aims at replicating these initial findings in an ethnically distinct sample and at extending them by measuring also the three components of urinary p-cresol, namely p-cresylsulfate, p-cresylglucuronate and free p-cresol. Total urinary p-cresol, p-cresylsulfate and p-cresylglucuronate were significantly elevated in 33 French autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases compared with 33 sex- and age-matched controls (p < 0.05). Detection and correction of interferences in spectroscopy techniques

By combining the apparent content curves method and the Youden method, we have developed a strategy for detecting constant and proportional errors in spectroscopy techniques. A method for elimination of spectral interferences (different of blank) is also proposed. To apply of this method there must be a matrix effect that varies with the amount of sample or a simulated matrix effect provided working under different experimental conditions that induce a variation of the analytical signal of the analyte. The proposed procedures have been applied to the determination of methyl orange in presence of phenol red, bromothymol blue and bromocresol purple.

Acid excreting mutants of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants acidifying glucose medium containing bromocresol purple were shown to excrete protons when placed in unbuffered water in the absence of any external carbon source. The mutants belong to 16 different complementation groups. Most of them do not grow on glycerol and the excreted protons are associated to particular sets of organic anions such as citrate, aconitate, succinate, fumarate or malate. These novel types of respiratory mutations seem to be located in genes operating in the Krebs or glyoxylate cycle.

Apparent content curves: new analytical applications

Analytical possibilities of apparent content curves for ternary systems are studied. The mathematical method proposed is applied to UV-Vis spectrophotometric and fluorimetric techniques. Samples containing fluoresceine/eosine/acridine and methyl red/methyl orange/cresol red are resolved by fluorimetry and UV-spectroscopy, respectively. Results obtained are in agreement with the theoretical contents in both cases.
