Key drivers of consumer purchase of airline tickets: A cross-cultural analysis

2013

Abstract This paper considers drivers of online airline ticket purchasing behaviour, and analyses the influence of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control on such decisions in two cultures. A number of hypotheses are examined using a sample of online shoppers in Spain and The Netherlands. We find that perceived control, subjective norm and attitude positively influence airline tickets online purchase intention in Spain, but in the Netherlands attitude is the key driver.

Two light sensors decode moonlight versus sunlight to adjust a plastic circadian/circalunidian clock to moon phase

2021

AbstractMany species synchronize their physiology and behavior to specific hours. It is commonly assumed that sunlight acts as the main entrainment signal for ~24h clocks. However, the moon provides similarly regular time information, and increasingly studies report correlations between diel behavior and lunidian cycles. Yet, mechanistic insight into the possible influences of the moon on ~24hr timers is scarce. We studiedPlatynereis dumeriliiand uncover that the moon, besides its role in monthly timing, also schedules the exact hour of nocturnal swarming onset to the nights’ darkest times. Moonlight adjusts a plastic clock, exhibiting <24h (moonlit) or >24h (no moon) periodicity. Abun…

The modes of supply net management: a capability view

2007

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the key capabilities required in supply net management.Design/methodology/approach – Uses the Management Capability Framework to break down supply net management into different modes and identify capabilities required in them.Findings – Reveals that the supply activity of companies increasingly takes place in intentionally developed strategic networks called supply nets. These networks pose distinctive challenges for supply chain management. Identifies four diverse but simultaneously extant modes of management in the supply net context, and discusses the key managerial capabilities in each mode.Originality/value – Provides a conceptual fram…

Raising Awareness on SDGs. A Multi-Stakeholder Approach

2020

Over the past few decades we have witnessed an increasing importance given to sustainable development and to the need of integrating it in our lives. United Nations was one of the first leading authorities to take action, and it has been constantly working on finding ways to draw attention upon sustainable development. Adopting the 2030 Agenda as of 2015 is proof of it and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the 169 targets stand a bold challenge ahead all countries. Due to their complexity, the SDGs require a multi-faceted approach, and in ensuring their implementation, multiple stakeholders at multiple levels and from multiple sectors need to participate. Therefore, this p…

Memetic Engineering for Permanent Education in Line with Sustainable Growth

2012

Given the recent point of view of the European Commission regarding the implementation of a new strategy for sustainable growth and jobs, this paper emphasises the opportunity and urgency of supporting the EU 2020 strategy, providing an appropriate educational tool for the knowledge society. The main objectives are: a. adapting memetic engineering expressed in terms of General System Theory to the teaching component of permanent education based on bounded rationality and "Just in Time"as key tools for fighting cognitive chaoplexity in the post-industrial era; b. facilitating the use of memetic engineering based on its double-faceted nature: as both positive and negative feedback; c. extendi…

Steps of Sustainable Development Implementation into Enterprise Activities

2015

Abstract Nowadays, principles of the sustainable development concept are present in almost all areas of life, play a key role in efforts to protect the environment, activities for the community and economic development. One of the "beneficiaries" of this concept are the enterprises, both small local as well as those with a global reach. In almost every operating company, in a greater or lesser extent, pillars of sustainable development are used, but before this happened - these companies have to go through a few steps, that led to the full implementation of the sustainable development concept and its application in practical terms. This article presents and describes in detail, the various …

SEAL: A Domain-Specific Language for Novice Wireless Sensor Network Programmers

2013

A lot of the prospective wireless sensor network users are novice programmers. Their experience in general-purpose programming languages is either limited or completely nonexistent. There are both financial and scientific incentives to empower these users and allow them to write sensor network applications on their own, rather than having to rely on a qualified computer science professional. We present SEAL, a sensor network programming language designed for novice programmers. SEAL manages to avoid computer science concepts that are hard to grasp for novices, while remaining suitable for typical sensor network application scenarios. The language is extensible in application-specific way, h…

Digital competence across boundaries - beyond a common Nordic model of the digitalisation of K-12 schools?

2021

This paper explores policy related to digital competence and the digitalisation of Nordic K-12 schools. Anchored in some key transnational policies on digital competence, it describes some current Nordic movements in the national policies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The concept of boundary objects is used as an analytical lens, for understanding digital competence as a plastic and temporal concept that can be used to discuss the multi-dimensional translation of this concept in these Nordic countries. The paper ends with a discussion of the potential to view digital competence as a unifying boundary object that, with its plasticity, temporality and n-dimensionality, can show sign…

Host immune response to Cryptosporidium parvum infection

2010

Species of the genus Cryptosporidium are protozoan parasites (Apicomplexa) that cause gastroenteritis in animals and humans. Of these Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis are the major causative agents of human cryptosporidiosis. Whereas infection is self-limiting in the immunocompetent hosts, immunocompromised individuals develop a chronic, life-threatening disease. As specific therapeutic or preventive interventions are not yet available, better understanding of the immune response to the parasite is required. This minireview briefly summarizes the factors involved in the innate and acquired immune response in this pathogen-host interaction with an emphasis on more recent da…
