Morphology, reorganization and stability of mesomorphic nanocrystals in isotactic polypropylene

Abstract The morphology and thermodynamic stability of crystals of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were analyzed as a function of the path of crystallization by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Samples were melt-crystallized at different rates of cooling using a “controlled rapid cooling technique”, and subsequently annealed at elevated temperature. Mesomorphic equi-axed domains with a size less than 20 nm were obtained by fast cooling from the melt at a rate larger about 100 K s−1. Glassy dynamics in monodisperse hard ellipsoids

We present evidence from computer simulations for glassy dynamics in suspensions of monodisperse hard ellipsoids. In equilibrium, almost spherical ellipsoids show a first order transition from an isotropic phase to a rotator phase. When overcompressing the isotropic phase into the rotator regime, we observe super-Arrhenius slowing down of diffusion and relaxation, accompanied by two-step relaxation in positional and orientational correlators. The effects are strong enough for asymptotic laws of mode-coupling theory to apply. Glassy dynamics are unusual in monodisperse systems. The paper discusses the investigation of crystallization of metals and alloys by differential thermal analysis (DTA). It was assumed that this method allows determination of the mechanism and kinetics of volumetric crystallization underiso conditions (e.g. anisothermal) on the basis of the parameters of the equation expressing an integral form of the DTA curve. In the present work, the combination of chemical immobilization with electron beam lithography enables the production of sensitive and reproducible SERS-active areas composed of stochastic arrangements of gold nanoparticles. The number of nanoparticles was varied from 2 to 500. Thereby a systematic analysis of these SERS-active areas allows us to study SERS efficiency as a function of the number of nanoparticles. We found that the experimental parameters are critical, in particular the size of the SERS-active area must be comparable to the effective area of excitation to obtained reproducible SERS measurements. To combine the optical properties of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with the electrical properties of semiconducting polymers, we prepared QD/polymer hybrids by grafting a block copolymer (BCP) containing thiol-anchoring moieties (poly(para-methyl triphenylamine-b-cysteamine acrylamide)) onto the surfaces of QDs through the ligand exchange procedure. The prepared QD/polymer hybrids possess improved processability such as enhanced solubility in various organic solvents as well as the film formation properties along with the improved colloidal stability derived from the grafted polymer shells. A high-yielding synthesis afforded a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene carrying acrylate units at the end of six attached alkyl spacers. The polymerization of these acrylate moieties could be initiated with thermal energy and through direct photoactivation without the addition of a photoinitiator. Formation and Rupture of Schottky Nanocontacts on ZnO Nanocolumns

In this paper, the electrical transport and mechanical properties of Pt/ZnO Schottky nanocontacts have been studied simultaneously during the formation and rupture of the nanocontacts. By combining multidimensional conducting scanning force spectroscopy with appropriated data processing, the physical relevant parameters (the ideality factor, the Schottky barrier height, and the rupture voltage) are obtained. It has been found that the transport curves strongly depend on the loading force. The Annealing Behavior of the Subsurface Zone Induced by Friction in Bismuth Detected by Positron Lifetime Technique

The annealing behavior of the subsurface zone (SZ) in pure bismuth induced by dry sliding was studied using the positron lifetime measurement. This measurement allows us to detect the SZ and its recovery, and recrystallization processes. The comparative measurements of the sample exposed to compression revealed the thermal stability of the SZ. The compressed sample rebuilt its structure due to the recovery and recrystallization processes at the temperature of 60 °C, whereas the sample exposed to dry sliding does it at higher temperature of 260 °C, which is close to the melting point.
