The Content of the Websites: Emergence of Intimate Cyberplaces

2017

On the basis of an interpretation of the content of the contrade’s websites, this chapter proposes that these communities unlock cyberspace through inhabiting cyberplaces. They local ise cyberspace, making it concrete and create intimacy by highlighting their history, special places, and maps of their district, announcing events and posting pictures of them, presenting and explaining their symbol ism, exhibiting emblems and artefacts, and by listing the names and showing pictures of community members and horses that have taken part in the palio. By constructing websites in such a way, the contrade inhabit cyberplaces that are characterised by intimacy and familiarity , as they present their…

Unfolding Cyberspace: A Phenomenological Approach to Cyberplace, Technology, and Community

2017

In this chapter, a possible phenomenology of the cyberspaces of the World Wide Web is outlined. Recent studies have suggested that concepts of existential phenomenology can provide convincing perspectives on cyberspace that enable a deep understanding of contemporary life, characterised by an increased blending of humans and modern technology . Based on the notions of “coming-to-the-world” coined by Peter Sloterdijk and “inhabiting ” from Tim Ingold , this chapter shows how we can conceive of the emergence of cyberplace s as a by-product of the process of unlocking cyberspace by inhabiting the contemporary world. This perspective also incorporates arguments from Actor-Network Theory and can…

Trademarks and Cyberspace

2006

Trademark law aids consumers who use trademarks in the marketplace to identify swiftly and without problems a product they liked or disliked in the past, distinguishing among the different competing manufacturers of a product. No one is entitled to sell or deliver commodities under the appearance that the commodities derive from someone else. The importance of consumer protection cannot be over-emphasized and the average consumer standard should remain the central point of the inquiry, even under domain name litigation. Replacing the initial interest confusion doctrine is one decisive step, along with the introduction of a doctrine representing the fact that there should be no confusion at …

The Quality of Service Issue in Virtual Environments

2011

Networked virtual environments (NVEs) have become a major trend in distributed computing, mainly due to the enormous popularity of multi-player online games in the entertainment industry. Nowadays, NVE systems are considered as the supporting technology for many networked and virtual organizations (NVO) (Singhal & Zyda, 1999), especially to those classified within the field of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), where networked computer can be seen as a standard to provide the technological means to support the team design (Ott & Nastansky, 1997). These highly interactive systems simulate a virtual world where multiple users share the same scenario. The system renders the im…

Inhabiting Cyberspace and Emerging Cyberplaces

2017

This concluding chapter summarises the benefits of using the notion of inhabiting cyberspace when analysing the websites of communities and neighbourhoods. Broadly speaking, the conclusions examine the results of the case study in the light of those studies reviewed in Chap. 2. It highlights that inhabiting cyberplaces based on the World Wide Web has become an important part of inhabiting the contemporary world. Outside pressures and the omnipresent threat of surveillance make it essential for neighbourhoods and communities, particularly those of interest for tourists and those involved in organising world-famous events, to unlock cyberspace. Online representations are, therefore, performat…

Risks and Crises in Virtual Publicity — Can Publicity Crises Be Prevented by Public Relations in the Cyberspace?

2008

The absolute amount of Internet users is growing dramatically, and the cyberspace has become the privileged domain of counter-publicity. Weblogs have already consolidated their position as a communication channel alongside the traditional established media. Weblogs and the blogosphere also offer a new arena for corporate communication. However, the standing of the blogosphere is different compared to the traditional information exchange relationship between corporate communication and the traditional mass media. This chapter is about the new communication sphere, which implies revision of the traditional schemes of public relations and new ethical guidelines for communication.

The construction of school participation. The Geoforo Iberoamericano in 2017

2017

2018

The inequality in access to cyberspace due to age at the beginning of the twenty-first century was followed by an economic crisis that intensified many socio-labor dynamics. Through a contextualization with INE data and a qualitative sample, the following work tries to capture the attitudes about ICT related to their previous labor trajectories on those over 45 years of age; and, on the other hand, its introduction to cyberspace from work as a conditioner in the perception of crisis, the maintenance of employment or their way out to retirement.

Protecting the besieged cyber fortress : Russia’s response to cyber threats

2019

The Information Security Doctrine of the Russian Federation (RF) defines the threat to information security as a complex of actions and factors that represent a danger to Russia in the information space. These threats can be information-psychological (i.e., when the adversary tries to influence a person’s mind) or information-technical (i.e., when the object of influence is the information infrastructure). The information infrastructure of the RF is a combination of information systems, websites, and communication networks located in the territory of the RF, or those used as part of international treaties signed by the RF. A cyber threat is an illegal penetration or threat of penetration by…

Mobilizing against the Other : cyberhate, refugee crisis and proximization

2017

Drawing on the insights from Media Proximization Approach (MPA), the present chapter explores the dynamics of the online construction of the Other in the context of current refugee crisis and the phenomenon of hate speech within cyberspace. While content- and theme-wise, it takes under scrutiny online refugee-related discourses, on the theoretical and methodological level it presents a new approach to mediated construction of social reality based on the notion of distance and Self/Other or Us/Them dichotomy. Coached within (Cognitive) Critical Discourse Analysis, such an approach calls for an integration of corpus linguistics methods and tools. The chapter addresses the following questions:…
