Pratica clinica e aderenza a Linee Guida nella diagnosi e terapia delle neoplasie vescicali non muscolo-invasive: report di uno studio ricognitivo ba…
2015
Clinical practice and adherence to the diagnosis and treatment of NMIBC guidelines: a report of a recognition based clinical cases study For non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, a disease with a considerable epidemiological and socio-economic impact, the introduction of the Guidelines has always evoked as a tool for the resolution of long-standing disputes in terms of diagnosis and therapy. Check the degree of routine clinical practice adherence to the Recommendations is for this disease, more than for other uro-oncology pathology, an urgent need felt by the urological community. To assess the level of Guidelines adherence’s, and study issues related to the paths of diagnosis and treatment o…
Need for liver evaluation in polycystic ovary syndrome
2007
Medicine is changing and requires a more in-depth knowledge also in fields that were previously considered completely different and dedicated to other specialists. A good example of this general trend is the paper by Cerda et al. [1] that shows a high prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The authors studied 41 young women with PCOS and found that 17 patients (41%) had NAFLD. In addition, 7 patients with NAFLD had increased aminotransferase levels raising the possibility of a transition to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Other reports have shown similar data recently [2–5]. It is time therefore that doctors caring for pat…
Mutational Characterization of the Bile Acid Receptor TGR5 in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
2010
Background: TGR5, the G protein-coupled bile acid receptor 1 (GPBAR1), has been linked to inflammatory pathways as well as bile homeostasis, and could therefore be involved in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) a chronic inflammatory bile duct disease. We aimed to extensively investigate TGR5 sequence variation in PSC, as well as functionally characterize detected variants.Methodology/Principal Findings: Complete resequencing of TGR5 was performed in 267 PSC patients and 274 healthy controls. Six nonsynonymous mutations were identified in addition to 16 other novel single-nucleotide polymorphisms. To investigate the impact from the nonsynonymous variants on TGR5, we created a receptor mod…
Morphological determination of the phototrophic community composition of biological soil crusts in coastal sand dunes in northern Germany
2022
This dataset comprises the microbial community composition of biological soil crusts in north-German sand dunes. For this we obtained enrichment cultures of phototrophic microorganisms, by placing fragments of biocrusts of the same Petri dishes as used for sequencing, in Petri dishes with Bold Basal (1N BBM) agarized medium (Bischoff and Bold 1963). Cultures were grown under standard laboratory conditions: with a 12-hour alteration of light and dark phases and irradiation of 25 μmol photons m-2 s-1 at a temperature 20 ± 5 ºС. Microscopic study of these raw cultures began in the third week of cultivation. Morphological examinations were performed using Olympus BX53 light microscope with Noma…

Age-dependent changes in the transcription profile of long-lived Drosophila over-expressing glutamate cysteine ligase
2011
Abstract In our prior studies ( Orr et al., 2005 ) we achieved a 30–50% increase in the life span of Drosophila by manipulating glutathione (GSH) production in neuronal tissues, through over-expression of glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL), a key enzyme in glutathione biosynthesis. In the present study, we identified gene response patterns from which plausible mechanisms responsible for the observed effects on life span might be inferred. Functional clustering analysis of the transcriptome data revealed that biological processes affected by GCLc in young flies (10 days) were generally related to cell morphogenesis and differentiation, while those in older flies were associated with nucleosome …
Interplay between Intestinal Bacterial Communities and Unicellular Parasites in a Morbidly Obese Population: A Neglected Trinomial
2022
Obesity is an epidemic causing a metabolic health crisis. Herein, the interactions between the gut prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities, metabolic comorbidities and diet were studied. Stool samples from 56 subjects, 47 with type III obesity and 9 with type II obesity and cardiovascular risk or metabolic disease, were assessed for the richness, diversity and ecology of the bacterial gut community through metagenomics, together with the study of the presence of common unicellular eukaryote parasites (Blastocystis sp., Dientamoeba fragilis and Giardia intestinalis) by qPCR. Clinical information regarding metabolic comorbidities and non-alcoholic hepatic fatty liver disease was gathered. To a…
Determination of total free amino acids with o-phthalaldehyde and N-acetyl-l-cysteine
1990
Abstract A spectrophotometric procedure is proposed for the determination of total free amino acids after reaction with o-phthalaldehyde and N-acetyl- l -cysteine, using isoleucine as the reference. The procedure was applied to the analysis of five samples of widely different composition. Recoveries were 98–105%.

Seawater carbonate chemistry and percentage cover of macroalgal species at three locations at Vulcano, Italy
2017
Beneficial effects of CO2 on photosynthetic organisms will be a key driver of ecosystem change under ocean acidification. Predicting the responses of macroalgal species to ocean acidification is complex, but we demonstrate that the response of assemblages to elevated CO2 are correlated with inorganic carbon physiology. We assessed abundance patterns and a proxy for CO2:HCO3- use (delta 13C values) of macroalgae along a gradient of CO2 at a volcanic seep, and examined how shifts in species abundance at other Mediterranean seeps are related to macroalgal inorganic carbon physiology. Five macroalgal species capable of using both HCO3- and CO2 had greater CO2 use as concentrations increased. Th…
