The intellectual demands of the intended chemistry curriculum in Czechia, Finland, and Turkey: a comparative analysis based on the revised Bloom's ta…

2020

Understanding the intellectual demands of an intended curriculum is crucial as it defines the frames for teaching and learning processes and practice during lessons. In this study, upper-secondary school chemistry curricula contents in Czechia, Finland, and Turkey were analysed, and their objectives were compared using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT). The intellectual demands were examined analysing the action verbs in the three curricula objectives based on their association with the intended cognitive process dimensions in the RBT. The Turkish upper-secondary chemistry curriculum was found to be more structured, detailed, and containing more objectives than the Czech and Finnish curric…

Hybridity Maintained, Reduced, Abolished and Redefined: The Czech Graphic Novel Alois Nebel (Jaroslav Rudiš, Jaromír 99, 2006) in Polish and German

2016

This study is devoted to comparative analysis of hybridity in Jaroslav Rudis’s and Jaromir Svejdik’s Graphic Novel Alois Nebel – the trilogy in book-form, 2006 (2011) – and the Polish and German translations. The basic forms of hybridity are intermedial (picture and text) hybridity, linguistic hybridity (given by elements of German, Russian, English, Polish and Slovak together with Czech main text), graphic hybridity (between Latin and Cyrillic script, printed and hand-written characters), and hybridity of discourse (interpersonal communication, telling, personal reflection, non-fiction text etc.). While the Polish text – privileged by translation between two West Slavic languages – maintai…

Representing the Other in European Media Discourses

2017

This book deals with the construction of the ‘other’ in European media at a time when the recently expanded EU is facing new political, economic and social challenges. The aim of the book is to document the diverse discursive forms of othering, ranging from differentiation to discrimination, that are directed against various ‘other Europeans’ in both institutionalized media and such non-elite semi-public contexts as discussion forums and citizen blogs. Drawing on data from British, Polish, French, Czech, Italian, Hungarian, Spanish and Estonian contexts, the individual papers investigate how various social groupings – regions, nations, ethnicities, communities, cultures – are discursively c…

Co-authorship networks and institutional collaboration in works about Learning, Teaching and Education Leadership

2017

Bibliometric indicators, based on the statistical analysis of quantitative data from scientific literature, constitute currently in an essential tool for the study of research activity. In the last years, the use of bibliometric indicators as a complement to other scientific indicators to analyse the research situation of a country, its evolution in its time and their position in the international context, has been extended. Collaboration is a characteristic feature of modern science and it is very difficult to measure this aspect. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted to count the combined signatures done by two or more authors, with the analysis of the institutional affiliation mentions and…

The Broader Linguistic and Cultural Context of Central Europe

2009

Central Europe is an extremely malleable concept. It denotes a region whose political shape has been changing dramatically throughout the last millennium since the emergence of the first polities. This work focuses on the rise and political uses of Czech, Magyar, Polish, and Slovak. But this would mean tearing away the roots of the sociolinguistic reality that surrounds and has deeply interacted with the everyday realities of Slovak-, Polish-, Magyar- and Czech-speakers. The resulting picture would agree with the predominant ethnonational thinking about Central Europe as an area neatly divided among the nation-states that contain the corresponding nations speaking exclusively in their own l…

Meeting the Challenges of Generational Change in the Teaching Profession : Towards a European Model for Intergenerational Teacher Collaboration

2013

In a European-wide effort to improve the professional development of teachers, the 2AgePro project was conducted from November 2008 to October 2010. One of its goals was to develop and test different forms of intergenerational teacher collaboration among junior and senior teachers in primary and secondary schools. Another aim was to utilise the results from these pilots, which were conducted in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, to create a model for intergenerational collaboration that could be used in any national or cultural setting. This article reports on the national pilots and proposes a European model for intergenerational collaboration for teachers. …
