Mandibular solitary plasmocytoma of the jaw: a case report.
2010
Plasma cell tumors are lymphoid neoplasms with an uncontrolled proliferation of B cells. These are divided into localized forms (solitary bone plasmocytoma -SBP- and extramedullary plasmocytoma -EP-) and disseminated forms (multiple myeloma-MM-). The SBP is a rare and controversial disease. The aim of this article is the analysis of this entity based on the presentation of a 64-year-old man without previous medical history, with a mass in the left mandibular angle extending to the parotid region on the same side. The panoramic radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an osteolytic lesion 6.5 x 5 x 6.7 cm in the mandibular angle with infiltration of the masticat…
Comparison between local and regional anesthesia in arteriovenous fistula creation.
2011
Purpose Assessment of the effectiveness of Brachial Plexus Block (BPB) via axillary approach compared to regional anesthesia for arteriovenous fistula surgery in patients affected by end-stage renal disease. Methods We compared forty patients randomly divided into two groups. Group A underwent BPB procedure with 15 mL ropivacaine 1% and 10 mL of saline (0.9% NaCl) via axillary approach. Group B received local anesthesia with lidocaine 2%. The forearm blood vessels were assessed by Doppler ultrasonography before and after the intervention. Results BPB performed on Group A was associated with a considerable venous dilation and a significant decrease (48.7%, P<.05) in pulsatility index (PI)…

Use of FRP fabrics and stainless steel grids for strengthening brick masonry columns
2016
This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on 42 solid clay brick columns internally strengthened by FRP fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in the horizontal joints of mortar. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric load. Eccentric tests were carried out loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire crosssection producing a D-region. The reinforcing of every course and of alternate courses are studied. The effectiveness of the proposed strengthening techniques is discussed, in terms of increase in strength and energy required to the collapse of brick columns. An analytical expression is proposed that …
Agri-urban patterns in Mediterranean urban regions: the case study of Pisa
2020
International audience; Urban regions require planning tools in order to manage agricultural areas under urban pressure. The aim of our paper is to test an analytical framework that combines both the composition in urban and agricultural land covers and their spatial configuration into four general agri-urban patterns: isolated fields, urban belt fields, periurban agricultural areas and rural areas. We evaluated the spatial distribution and the changes of such patterns in the short-term (2003-2011) starting from Spot images for the case study of Pisa, Italy. The results indicate an increase of the most urban patterns despite continuing to have cash crops, a stability of periurban agricultur…
Gentrifizierung in periurbanen Räumen Frankreichs: Am Beispiel des Umlandes von Nancy
2019
Genome characterisation of two Ljungan virus isolates from wild bank voles (Myodes glareolus) in Sweden
2015
Ljungan virus (LV) (family Picornaviridae, genus Parechovirus) is a suspected zoonotic pathogen with associations to human disease in Sweden. LV is a single-stranded RNA virus with a positive sense genome. There are five published Ljungan virus strains, three isolated from Sweden and two from America, and are classified into four genotypes. A further two strains described here were isolated from wild bank voles (Myodes glareolus) caught in Vastmanlands county, Sweden in 1994. These strains were sequenced using next generation pyrosequencing technology on the GS454flx platform. Genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the obtained genomes confirms isolates LV340 and LV342 as two new putative mem…
Correction to ‘Secondary structure determination of conserved SARS-CoV-2 RNA elements by NMR spectroscopy’
2021
The current pandemic situation caused by the Betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (SCoV2) highlights the need for coordinated research to combat COVID-19. A particularly important aspect is the development of medication. In addition to viral proteins, structured RNA elements represent a potent alternative as drug targets. The search for drugs that target RNA requires their high-resolution structural characterization. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a worldwide consortium of NMR researchers aims to characterize potential RNA drug targets of SCoV2. Here, we report the characterization of 15 conserved RNA elements located at the 5' end, the ribosomal frameshift segment and the 3'-un…
The 5' Untranslated Region of the
2018
Many of the virulence traits that make Candida albicans an important human fungal pathogen are regulated on a transcriptional level. Here, we report an important regulatory contribution of translation, which is exerted by the extensive 5′ untranslated regulatory sequence (5′ UTR) of the transcript for the protein Efg1, which determines growth, metabolism, and filamentation in the fungus. The presence of the 5′ UTR is required for efficient translation of Efg1, to promote filamentation. Because transcripts for many relevant regulators contain extensive 5′ UTR sequences, it appears that the virulence of C. albicans depends on the combination of transcriptional and translational regulatory mec…
The coat protein of prunus necrotic ringspot virus specifically binds to and regulates the conformation of its genomic RNA
2003
AbstractBinding of coat protein (CP) to the 3′ nontranslated region (3′-NTR) of viral RNAs is a crucial requirement to establish the infection of Alfamo- and Ilarviruses. In vitro binding properties of the Prunus necrotic ringspot ilarvirus (PNRSV) CP to the 3′-NTR of its genomic RNA using purified E. coli- expressed CP and different synthetic peptides corresponding to a 26-residue sequence near the N-terminus were investigated by electrophoretic mobility shift assays. PNRSV CP bound to, at least, three different sites existing on the 3′-NTR. Moreover, the N-terminal region between amino acid residues 25 to 50 of the protein could function as an independent RNA-binding domain. Single exchan…
