The Hu-Washizu variational principle for the identification of imperfections in beams

This paper presents a procedure for the identification of imperfections of structural parameters based on displacement measurements by static tests. The proposed procedure is based on the well-known Hu–Washizu variational principle, suitably modified to account for the response measurements, which is able to provide closed-form solutions to some inverse problems for the identification of structural parameter imperfections in beams. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure has been inversely associated with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) risk, but only inconsistently, only in a few studies, and without attention to HL heterogeneity. We conducted a pooled analysis of HL risk focusing on type and timing of UVR exposure and on disease subtypes by age, histology, and tumor-cell Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) status. Selection of the Optimal Design Rainfall Return Period of Urban Drainage Systems

Abstract The aim of this work is to define a methodology to identify the optimal rainfall return period for the design of urban drainage systems. The choice of the optimal return period is made minimizing the total costs of the system: the sewer network is dimensioned for a set of possible design rainfall return periods, and the corresponding construction, maintenance and operation costs are evaluated. For each scenario, the total expected damage from flooding caused by rainfall events with return period greater than the design one is then estimated by hydraulic simulation. This methodology has been applied to a small urban catchment in Palermo (Italy).

Synthesis and biological evaluation of structural variants of carbazoquinocin C

Some new structural variants of the alkaloid carbazoquinocin C were synthesized in a few steps with good to excellent yields. The key step comprises a cyclisation reaction of appropriate 2-vinylindoles with oxalyl chloride. The carbazole-3,4-quinones are able to trap oxygen-centred radicals. In some biological/biochemical assays some of these compounds exhibit extraordinary results including inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 and 5-lipoxygenase in the μM-range. Moreover some of the carbazoquinocin C-variants inhibit significant oxidative damage of cellular DNA in nM-range.

Polo-like kinase (PLK1) has been identified as a potential target for cancer treatment. Although a number of small molecules have been investigated as PLK1 inhibitors, many of which showed limited selectivity. PLK1 harbors a regulatory domain, the Polo box domain (PBD), which has a key regulatory function for kinase activity and substrate recognition.
