One-year follow-up of clinical, metabolic and oxidative stress profile of morbid obese patients after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. 8-oxo-dG as a …

2017

Obesity has grown worldwide over the last few decades. In its different degrees, obesity is accompanied by many clinical and biochemical alterations reflecting the pathological condition of various body tissues. Among the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of obesity and associated complications, oxidative stress (OS) may be playing an important role. In the present study, we have characterized at systemic level the degree of OS status in a group of morbid obese patients (BMI>40 kg/m2) at basal sate and its modulation during one year after bariatric surgery using the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) technique. As compared with normal weight subjects matched in age, peripheral blood…

Adolescent transport and unintentional injuries: a systematic analysis using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

2022

Correction to Lancet Public Health 2022; 7: e657-69. Lancet Public Health. 2022 Dec;7(12):e992. doi: 10.1016/S2468-2667(22)00294-8. PMID: 36462522. Background: Globally, transport and unintentional injuries persist as leading preventable causes of mortality and morbidity for adolescents. We sought to report comprehensive trends in injury-related mortality and morbidity for adolescents aged 10-24 years during the past three decades. Methods: Using the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors 2019 Study, we analysed mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attributed to transport and unintentional injuries for adolescents in 204 countries. Burden is reported in absolut…

Inhibition of Xanthine Oxidase by Allopurinol Prevents Skeletal Muscle Atrophy: Role of p38 MAPKinase and E3 Ubiquitin Ligases

2012

International audience; Abstract Top Alterations in muscle play an important role in common diseases and conditions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated during hindlimb unloading due, at least in part, to the activation of xanthine oxidase (XO). The major aim of this study was to determine the mechanism by which XO activation causes unloading-induced muscle atrophy in ratsand its possible prevention by allopurinol, a well-known inhibitor of this enzyme. For this purpose we studied one of the main redox sensitive signalling cascades involved in skeletal muscle atrophy i.e. p38 MAPKinaseand the expression of two well known muscle specific E3 ubiquitin ligases involved in proteolysis, …

Age-related changes in antioxidant defence mechanisms and peroxidation in isolated hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats

1994

International audience; The effects of age and hypertension on the antioxidant defence systems and the lipid peroxidation in rat isolated hepatocytes were studied. Four different age groups (1, 3, 6 and 12 months) were considered in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Age-associated changes were observed on vitamin E status, glutathione (GSH) level, MDA formation and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in both strains. Maximal levels or activities of these parameters were found at 3 and 6 months, except for MDA which was low at 3 months. Then, a fall was observed at 12-month-old compared to 6-month values. In addition, GSH-Px activity was sig…

Roles of sedentary aging and lifelong physical activity in exchange of glutathione across exercising human skeletal muscle.

2014

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules with regulatory functions, and in young and adult organisms, the formation of ROS is increased during skeletal muscle contractions. However, ROS can be deleterious to cells when not sufficiently counterbalanced by the antioxidant system. Aging is associated with accumulation of oxidative damage to lipids, DNA, and proteins. Given the pro-oxidant effect of skeletal muscle contractions, this effect of age could be a result of excessive ROS formation. We evaluated the effect of acute exercise on changes in blood redox state across the leg of young (23±1 years) and older (66±2 years) sedentary humans by measuring the whole blood co…

Glutathione Peroxidase-1 Deficiency Potentiates Dysregulatory Modifications of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase and Vascular Dysfunction in Aging

2014

Recently, we demonstrated that gene ablation of mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 markedly contributed to age-related vascular dysfunction and mitochondrial oxidative stress. The present study has sought to investigate the extent of vascular dysfunction and oxidant formation in glutathione peroxidase-1–deficient ( GPx-1 −/− ) mice during the aging process with special emphasis on dysregulation (uncoupling) of the endothelial NO synthase. GPx-1 −/− mice on a C57 black 6 (C57BL/6) background at 2, 6, and 12 months of age were used. Vascular function was significantly impaired in 12-month-old GPx-1 −/− -mice as compared with age-matched controls. Oxidan…

Measurement of inflammatory mediators of mast cells and eosinophils in native nasal lavage fluid in nasal polyposis.

2001

Background: Nasal polyposis (NP) often coexists with asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis. Polyp histology typically shows chronic, eosinophilic inflammation. The inflammatory cell infiltrate generally includes eosinophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells and mast cells. Objective: To gain insight into the natural history of NP, we analysed mediator levels and leukocyte values in nasal fluids and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE levels and eosinophils in the blood in several groups of both allergic and non-allergic patients with nasal polyps and in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: Thirty-two patients with nasal polyps en…
