Tracer-Encapsulated Solid Pellet (TESPEL) injection system for the TJ-II stellarator
2016
A tracer-encapsulated solid pellet (TESPEL) injection system for the TJ-II stellarator was recently developed. In order to reduce the time and cost for the development, we combined a TESPEL injector provided by National Institute for Fusion Science with an existing TJ-II cryogenic pellet injection system. Consequently, the TESPEL injection into the TJ-II plasma was successfully achieved, which was confirmed by several pellet diagnostics including a normal-incidence spectrometer for monitoring a tracer impurity behavior.
Thin-shell plastic lenses for space and laboratory applications
2004
We have identified an inexpensive, readily available, mechanically stable, extremely smooth, elastic, and mechanically uniform plastic suitable for thin film X-ray optics. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is easily deformed without losing its elastic properties or surface smoothness. Most important, PET can be coated with mono- or multilayers that reflect X-rays at grazing incidence. We have used these properties to produce X-ray optics made either as a concentric nest of cylinders or as a spiral. We have produced accurately formed shells in precisely machined vacuum mandresl or used a pin and wheel structure to form a continuously wound spiral. The wide range of medical, industrial and sci…
In situ monitoring of pulsed laser indium–tin-oxide film deposition by optical emission spectroscopy
2001
We performed optical emission spectroscopy to monitor the plasma produced during the ablation of indium-tin-oxide targets under different oxygen pressure conditions using a pulsed UV laser. Molecular bands of InO were identified in the fluorescent spectra produced by pulsed laser ablation. InO line monitoring allowed obtaining the optimal conditions for good-quality ITO film deposition. We demonstrated that it is possible to correlate InO line spectroscopic parameters with the conditions required to fabricate a high-conductivity and high-transparent ITO thin film. In particular, low resistivity (10-4 to 10-3 Ω cm) was obtained in films deposited at room temperature by regulating oxygen pres…
Improved noncontact optical sensor for detection of glucose concentration and indication of dehydration level.
2014
The ability to extract different bio-medical parameters from one single wristwatch device can be very applicable. The wearable device that is presented in this paper is based on two optical approaches. The first is the extraction and separation of remote vibration sources and the second is the rotation of linearly polarized light by certain materials exposed to magnetic fields. The technique is based on tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckles produced in the wrist when being illuminated by a laser beam. Change in skin’s temporal vibration profile together with change in the magnetic medium that is generated by time varied glucose concentration caused these temporal chan…
Effects of the process conditions on the plume of a laser-irradiated indium–tin-oxide target
2001
Abstract The plume of a laser-ablated indium–tin-oxide target was investigated by optical emission spectroscopy. Atomic and ionic species of indium, tin and oxygen were observed; moreover, molecular bands of indium oxide were identified in the fluorescent spectra. The effects of the oxygen as a background gas and of the laser fluence on the behaviour of the ejected particles were studied with respect to the intensity of the emission and the delay time as a function of the observation distance from the target surface. The non-linear behaviour of the fluorescent species with the process conditions could infer spatial variations of the plume composition. The analysis demonstrates a plume expan…
Demonstration of remote optical measurement configuration that correlates to glucose concentration in blood
2010
An optical approach allowing the extraction and the separation of remote vibration sources has recently been proposed. The approach has also been applied for medical related applications as blood pressure and heart beats monitoring. In this paper we demonstrate its capability to monitor glucose concentration in blood stream. The technique is based on the tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckle produced in human skin (wrist) when being illuminated by a laser beam. A temporal change in skin’s vibration profile generated due to blood pulsation is analyzed for estimating the glucose concentration. Experimental tests that were carried out in order to verify the proposed appro…
Spectroscopic method to study low charge state ion and cold electron population in ECRIS plasma
2018
The results of optical emission spectroscopy experiments probing the cold electron population of a 14 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) are reported. The study has been conducted with a high resolution spectrometer and data acquisition setup developed specifically for the diagnostics of weak emission line characteristic to ECRIS plasmas. The optical emission lines of low charge state ions and neutral atoms of neon have been measured and analyzed with the line-ratio method. The aforementioned electron population temperature of the cold electron population (Te < 100 eV) is determined for Maxwell-Boltzmann and Druyvesteyn energy distributions to demonstrate the applicability …
Investigation into the gas mixing effect in ECRIS plasma using Kα and optical diagnostics
2018
Mixing a lighter gas species into the plasma of an ECRIS is known to enhance high charge state production of the heavier gas species. With this investigation, Kα diagnostics, optical emission spectroscopy and the measured charge state distribution of the extracted beam were combined to shed more light on the physics governing this phenomenon. Kα diagnostics data from two ion sources, the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS and the GTS at iThemba LABS, are presented to gain confidence on the observed trends. The results seem to favor ion cooling as the most likely mechanism responsible for the favorable influence of the gas mixing.Mixing a lighter gas species into the plasma of an ECRIS is known to enhance hi…
Diagnostics for meta-analysis based on generalized linear mixed models
2012
Meta-analysis is the method to combine data coming from multiple studies, with the aim to provide an overall event-risk measure of interest summarizing information coming from the studies. In meta-analysis generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) are particularly used for a number of measures of interest since they allow the true effect size to differ from study to study while accepting binary, discrete as well as continuous response variable. In the present paper some strategies of influence diagnostics based on log-likelihood are suggested and discussed. These are considered for Individual Patient Data, Aggregate Data and their compounding.
Detection of Fusarium Species in Clinical Specimens by Probe-Based Real-Time PCR
2019
The mold Fusarium is a ubiquitous fungus causing plant, animal and human infections. In humans, Fusarium spp. are the major cause of eye infections in patients wearing contact lenses or after local trauma. Systemic infections by Fusarium spp. mainly occur in immunosuppressed patients and can disseminate throughout the human body. Due to high levels of resistance to antifungals a fast identification of the causative agent is an urgent need. By using a probe-based real-time PCR assay specific for the genus Fusarium we analysed several different clinical specimens detecting Fusarium spp. commonly found in clinical samples in Germany. Also, a large collection of lung fluid samples of haematolog…
