Thermal and X-ray powder diffraction studies of aliphatic polyester dendrimers

2004

The syntheses and thermal and X-ray powder diffraction analyses of three sets of aliphatic polyester dendrimers based on 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as a repeating unit and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, and 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane as core molecules are reported. These dendritic polyesters were prepared in high yields with the divergent method. The thermal properties of these biodendrimers were evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal decomposition of the compounds occurred around 250 °C for the hydroxyl-ended dendrimers and around 150 °C for the acetonide-protected dendrimers. In addition, the crystallinit…

Synthesis, thermal properties and X-ray structural study of weak C–H⋯OC hydrogen bonding in aliphatic polyester dendrimers

2004

Dendritic polyester compounds based on polyol with three, four and six reactive hydroxy groups as a molecular core, chloroacetyl chloride (or bromoacetyl bromide) and sodium metal enolate were prepared by a simple two-step synthetic procedure. The compounds were characterised by using the NMR and MS techniques, and the thermal properties were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The structures of the crystalline compounds were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Detailed analysis of the structures showed that the self-complementarity of the molecules together with a multitude of weak C-H⋯O=C hydrogen bonding results in crystal…

Oxadiazolyl-pyridines and perfluoroalkyl-carboxylic acids as building blocks for protic ionic liquids: crossing the thin line between ionic and hydro…

2012

A series of 18 samples has been prepared in order to obtain fluorinated materials as Protic Ionic Liquids (PILs). These were synthesized by appropriately mixing 1,2,4-oxadiazoles derivatised with two pyridines, or one pyridine and a fluorinated chain, and perfluoroalkyl-carboxylic acids, either mono- or dicarboxylic, leading to symmetric and non-symmetric materials. Many of them showed low melting points. However, the possibility of classifying the synthesized materials as PILs is discussed in terms of effective ionicity of the systems by the combination of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation and IR spectroscopy. The important outcome of our investigation is that the complete proton…

MCM-41 silica effect on gel polymer electrolytes based on thermoplastic polyurethane

2012

Abstract Polymer electrolytes were prepared from thermoplastic polyurethane with addition of mixture of N-ethyl(methylether)-N-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonimide (PYRA12O1TFSI) ionic liquid, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfoneimide) salt and propylene carbonate. MCM-41 mesoporous silica was added in proportions ranging from 5 to 20 wt.% with respect to TPU. The electrolytes were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, linear voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The MCM-41 addition to the system was found to improve the electrochemical stability of the membranes and to reduce the gel electrolyte/metallic Li interfacial resistance. The f…

A Maze of Solid Solutions of Pimobendan Enantiomers: An Extraordinary Case of Polymorph and Solvate Diversity

2017

Over 10 polymorphs and solvatomorphs of the chiral pharmaceutically active ingredient pimobendan were found to lack enantioselectivity in the solid state, accordingly, forming solid solutions of enantiomers, which is reported to be a rare phenomenon. Solid form screening was performed on different enantiomeric composition samples to analyze obtained phases with powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry. For nonsolvated forms, a melt phase diagram has been constructed convincingly showing the existence of stable and metastable solid solutions near the pure enantiomer and around the racemic composition regions. A crystal structure study combined with sol…

Recycling ground tire rubber (GTR) scraps as high-impact filler of in situ produced polyketone matrix

2014

A sustainable procedure for recycling powdered rubber coming from scrap tires (ground tire rubber [GTR]) is proposed as based on the dispersion in polyketone (PK) matrix, obtained in situ by CO/ethylene copolymerization. Three types of catalysts are used operative in solvents of different polarities. The catalyst productivity and the hybrids morphology are evaluated and optimized to final composites features. The obtained products are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and solvent extractions in order to investigate the occurrence and the extent of interactions between PK macromolecular chains and the GTR components; and their effects on the final proper…

Radiation curing of diacrylate glycerolate of bisphenol-A in the presence of an organically modified montmorillonite for the production of flame-resi…

2006

Polymerization of an acrylate derivative of bisphenol-A by ionizing radiation in the presence of an organically modified montmorillonite was carried out in order to produce a flame-retardant composite. The measurement of the thermal effect during irradiation indicates that radiation curing of pure resin and resin-clay mixtures occurred in both cases. Moreover, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that a curing completion can be obtained by thermal curing after irradiation with a significant increase of the glass transition temperature. The morphology was investigated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. These have indicated t…

Preparation, characterization and in vitro test of composites poly-lactic acid/hydroxyapatite scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

2018

Abstract In this work, the possibility to produce composite Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/Hydroxyapatite (HA) porous scaffolds via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) for bone tissue engineering applications was investigated. Several PLLA/HA wt/wt ratios (95/5, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50, 34/66) were tested and the as-obtained scaffolds were characterized via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis, Gas Pycnometry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and mechanical compression test. Morphological analysis revealed an open structure with interconnected pores and HA particles embedded in the polymer matrix. Finally, cell cultures were carried out into t…

Preparation and Characterisation of Alendronate-Loaded Chitosan Microparticles Obtained Through the Spray Drying Technique

2009

Microparticles of chitosan (CHT) containing alendronate sodium (AL) were prepared in four drug:polymer ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6) using the spray drying technique. The efficiency of the method was evaluated by determining production yield (about 70 %) and microencapsulation efficiency, which was almost 100 % in the case of all four of the formulations studied. Particles had a mean size of between 3.6 and 4.6 microm, and a near-spherical shape. The formulations with the highest content of AL (drug:polymer ratio 1:1 and 1:2) showed an asymmetrical distribution of particles, which were larger in size, and had a higher proportion of irregular particles than the other formulations. FT-IR analys…
