Internationalization pathways of family SMEs:Psychic distance as a focal point
2010
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how psychic distance affects the internationalization process, foreign market entry (FME), and entry mode choice of Finnish small and medium-sized family enterprises (family SMEs) operating in France. Design/methodology/approach: The paper reports findings from an in-depth case study covering four Finnish manufacturing family SMEs operating in the French market. The data were analyzed using the Uppsala model and distance creating and distance-bridging factors encountered in the FME to France. Findings: The findings reveal that the family SMEs mainly followed a sequential process and favored indirect entry modes before entering the French …
Woven folklore: computers promoting cross-cultural understanding
2004
Multicultural cooperation requires participants to understand the cultural background and identity of all the partners. In this respect, computers provide the cooperation with a new and interesting instrument. A team of students from two schools, one in Tanzania, another in Finland, implemented a multimedia version of an African folklore story. A computer served as a platform for genuine cooperation: the whole team worked on one electronic artefact, despite the geographical distance between the members. The collaborative process helped each participant to clarify his/her own cultural background whilst also becoming acquainted with that of his/her distant partner.
Simplified methods for spatial sampling: application to first-phase data of Italian National Forest Inventory (INFC) in Sicily
2006
Abstract: Methodological approaches able to integrate data from sample plots with cartographic processes are widely applied. Based on mathematic-statistical techniques, the spatial analysis allows the exploration and spatialization of geographic data. Starting from the punctual information on land use types obtained from the dataset of the first phase of the ongoing new Italian NFI (INFC), a spatialization of land cover classes was carried out using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method. In order to validate the obtained results, an overlay with other vectorial land use data was carried out. In particular, the overlay compared data at different scales, evaluating differences in terms …

Evaluation of Distance Education : Cost-Effectiveness
1996
This entry attempts to present the state of the art on the question of the cost-effectiveness analysis of distance teaching systems. It x-publicationlocationes especially two problems : the rapid evolution of information technologies introduces continuous changes in the combination of pedagogical inputs, from both a content and a cost point of view ; in addition, the new information technologies are also adopted within traditional face to face teaching, which leads to a reduction of the differencies between both modes of teaching delivery, and promotes some sort of convergence between the two systems.
Une expérience de formation des enseignants à distance : le cas du projet Logos au Brésil
1999
This objective of the project is to give a full secondary education to rural Brazilian teachers who have an excessively low initial level of education. It is based on a modular approach with teaching material learned at home by trainees. Trainees have access to a tutor every week. They receive from their tutor require advices and module is mastered, a test is given to the training in order to move to the next module. This evaluation deals both with the cost and the effectiveness of the project and compares both dimensions with alternative modes of training.
Mixed e-assessment: An application of the studentgenerated question technique
2010
This paper presents the experiment of a mixed summative-formative evaluation in an asynchronous distance higher education context. In the experiment, performed in the distance course of Total Quality Management, Industrial Engineering, University of Guadalajara (Mexico), students are guided to formultate questions on specific topics. Studentgenerated questions are evaluated through an ad-hoc quantitative tool, specifically designed for the purpose: the four-criterion Observation Matrix. The experiment shows: (1) that it is possible to improve the Higher Education evaluation process and formalise students' skill in a more thoroughly way than with traditional evaluation; (2) how the student-e…
Selección de personal basada en métodos difusos
2011
Nuestro enfoque …
Design of dispersion-managed fiber systems for transmitting chirp-free Gaussian pulses
2008
International audience; We present a general method to analytically design a dispersion-managed (DM) fiber system for any desired fiber (dispersion, nonlinearity and losses) and pulse (width and energy) parameters. This analytical design allows one to transmit chirp-free Gaussian pulses (for very long distances) in almost all kinds of DM fiber systems that have appeared so far in the literature, including systems with dispersion map length greater, equal or shorter with respect to the amplification period.
Absence of spatial genetic structure in common dentex (Dentex dentex Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea as evidenced by nuclear and mitochondri…
2018
International audience; The common dentex, Dentex dentex, is a fish species which inhabits marine environments in the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic regions. This is an important species from an ecological, economic and conservation perspective, however critical information on its population genetic structure is lacking. Most samples were obtained from the Mediterranean Sea (17 sites) with an emphasis around Corsica (5 sites), plus one Atlantic Ocean site. This provided an opportunity to examine genetic structuring at local and broader scales to provide science based data for the management of fishing stocks in the region. Two mitochondrial regions were examined (D-loop and COI) along…
