Soil water repellency assessment in olive groves in Southern and Eastern Spain

Soil water repellency (SWR) has been reported under different soils, land uses and regions of the world, particularly in forest land and after wildfires, yet the understanding of this variable in agricultural lands is still rather limited. Effects of protein on retention of ADH enzyme activity encapsulated in trehalose matrices by spray drying

The retention of the enzymatic activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) on spray drying was examined under various drying conditions. Trehalose was used in the formulation of feed stocks for the spray drying. The retention of ADH activity was dependent on the concentration of ADH in the feed solution. The addition of other proteins, such as bovine serum albumin and β-lactoglobulin, exhibited an additional improvement of the retention of ADH activity. The inlet and outlet temperature of the drying air was another key factor for the enzyme activity on the spray drying. The surface morphology of the spray-dried particle was changed drastically with the addition of proteins.

Infusion mass spectrometry as a fingerprint to characterize varnishes in oil pictorial artworks.

Mass spectrometry methodology to characterize drying oil used as binding media and varnishes in pictorial artworks, prior to conservation or restoration treatment, is proposed. The analytical treatment requires prior basic hydrolysis of the samples to release the fatty acids : caprylic, pelargonic, capric, sebacic, azelaic, suberic, eicosanoic, lauric, mirystic, palmitic, linolenic, linoleic, oleic and stearic, followed by separation from the matrix by a hexane/water extraction. Effect of Drying Condition on the Quality of Dry Late Peaches of Leonforte

The Late Peach of Leonforte [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] grown in Southern Italy matures in September and October and as late as November. Fruits are wrapped in paper bags to protect them from parasites and are harvested only when fully ripe. Protected inside the bags, they ripen late and take on a bright yellow colour with red streaks. Highly aromatic, the peach has yellow, firm flesh that is high in soluble solids and has a distinctive, slightly caramelized flavour. Untreated and processed gel plates of polyacrylamide (PAA) gradient gels were cut into strips perpendicularly to their length, and the wet and dry matter of the sections was determined. In untreated gels the apparent dry matter, as well as the relative dry matter, are a linear function of the gel length. In processed gels, however, only the apparent gel concentration increases linearly with the gel length, whereas the relative dry matter increases linearly with the square root of the gel length. Effect of iron and aeration on superoxide dismutase and catalase activity of PHB-producing Azotobacter chroococcum

Abstract The effect of aeration level and iron concentration on Azotobacter chroococcum 23 growth, PHB accumulation and antioxidative enzyme activities was investigated in shake flask experiments. Biomass yield and carbon source conversation coefficients increased in the presence of iron in the growth medium and under decreased aeration. The highest biomass production was observed for the culture grown in a medium with 36 μM of initial iron concentration and moderate aeration level. Activities of Two Peptidases in Resting and Germinating Seeds of Scots Pine, Pinus sylvestris

Extracts prepared from resting seeds of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., rapidly hydrolysed two peptides, Leu–Tyr and Ala–Gly, at pH 8.6 and 7.8, respectively. In gel chromatography on Sephadex G-100 the two activities were eluted as separate peaks, which indicates that they are due to two different peptidases. The seeds were allowed to germinate at 20°C, the activities of the two enzymes were assayed separately on extracts from the endosperm and seedling tissues at different stages of germination, and compared with corresponding changes in dry weight and total nitrogen.
