High mobility group box 1 and markers of oxidative stress in human cord blood.
2019
Background Parturition induces considerable oxidative stress and many inflammatory mediators, such as high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), are involved from the beginning of the pregnancy to birth. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum cord blood concentration of diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROM), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), and HMGB1 to investigate the perinatal oxidative status of neonates and correlation with mode of delivery, as well as the influence of labor. Methods The subjects consisted of 214 neonates delivered at University Hospital "G. Martino", Messina, in a 6 months period. Venous blood samples were collected from the umbilical cord after cord s…
FERULIC ACID INHIBITS OXIDATE STRESS AND CELL DEATH INDUCED BY Ab OLIGOMERS: IMPROVED DELIVERY BY SOLID LIPID NANOPARTICLES.
2009
Oxidative stress and dysfunctional mitochondria are among the earliest events in AD, triggering neurodegeneration. The use of natural antioxidants could be a neuroprotective strategy for blocking cell death. Here, the antioxidant action of ferulic acid (FA) on different paths leading to degeneration of recombinant beta-amyloid peptide (rAbeta42) treated cells was investigated. Further, to improve its delivery, a novel drug delivery system (DDS) was used. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), empty or containing ferulic acid (FA-SNL), were developed as DDS. The resulting particles had small colloidal size and highly negative surface charge in water. Using neuroblastoma cells and rAbeta42 oligome…
ChemInform Abstract: Enantioselective Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidative β,β-Fluoroarylation of α,β-Unsaturated Carbonyl Derivatives.
2016
The site-selective palladium-catalyzed three-component coupling of deactivated alkenes, arylboronic acids, and N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide is disclosed herein. The developed methodology establishes a general, modular, and step-economical approach to the stereoselective β-fluorination of α,β-unsaturated systems.

2016
Oxidative treatment of 4-methoxy substituted 2-aryl cinnamates leads to an dealkylative C—C coupling and gives access to spirocyclic compounds.
ChemInform Abstract: Versatile Oxidative Approach to Carbazoles and Related Compounds Using MoCl5.
2014
Oxidative intramolecular coupling of tertiary amines with at least two electron-rich arenes gives carbazoles in good to excellent yields.
ChemInform Abstract: Powerful Fluoroalkoxy Molybdenum(V) Reagent for Selective Oxidative Arene Coupling Reaction.
2014
A novel dinuclear fluoroalkoxy Mo(V)-complex is efficient as reagent for the oxidative arene coupling of electron-rich arenes with superior reactivity compared to MoCl5 and MoCl5/TiCl4.

Pd2(dba)3/ Xantphos-catalyzed coupling of the sulfoxides (I) and (V) with amines and carbon monoxide allows a new and efficient access to amides of type (IV) and (VI).
Peroxynitrite generated from constitutive nitric oxide synthase mediates the early biochemical injury in short-term cultured hepatocytes
2000
AbstractEarly loss of P450 in rat hepatocyte cultures appears directly related to nitric oxide (NO) overproduction. This study provides experimental evidence for the induction – shortly after isolation through the classical procedure – of strong oxidative stress that involves both oxygen-derived and NO-derived species. NO formation at this stage is due to the early activation of liver constitutive NO synthase (cNOS). Immunodetection of nitrated proteins provides direct evidence of endogenous peroxynitrite (PN) formation upon hepatocyte isolation. On the basis of the combined use of dihydrorhodamine 123 and NOS inhibitors, the analysis of the amount, time course and nature of the species inv…
The Proteome and Lipidome of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 Cells Grown under Light-Activated Heterotrophic Conditions*
2015
Cyanobacteria are photoautotrophic prokaryotes with a plant-like photosynthetic machinery. Because of their short generation times, the ease of their genetic manipulation, and the limited size of their genome and proteome, cyanobacteria are popular model organisms for photosynthetic research. Although the principal mechanisms of photosynthesis are well-known, much less is known about the biogenesis of the thylakoid membrane, hosting the components of the photosynthetic, and respiratory electron transport chain in cyanobacteria. Here we present a detailed proteome analysis of the important model and host organism Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 under light-activated heterotrophic growth condition…
Efavirenz: What is known about the cellular mechanisms responsible for its adverse effects
2017
The HIV infection remains an important health problem worldwide. However, due to the efficacy of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), it has ceased to be a mortal condition, becoming a chronic disease instead. Efavirenz, the most prescribed non-nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), has been a key component of cART since its commercialization in 1998. Though still a drug of choice in many countries, its primacy has been challenged by the arrival of newer antiretroviral agents with better toxicity profiles and treatment adherence. The major side effects related to EFV have been widely described in clinical studies, however the mechanisms that participate in their pat…
