Effect of different aqueous solutions of pure salts and salt mixtures in reverse electrodialysis systems for closed-loop applications

2018

Abstract Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) in a closed-loop arrangement is a viable way to convert low-grade heat into electric power. The present work experimentally investigates the use of pure salt- and equimolar two salts-water solutions as feeds in a lab-scale RED unit. RED performances were analysed in terms of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV), stack resistance and corrected power density. The pure salts and the mixtures employed were chosen via a computational analysis. Effect of feed solution velocity and concentration was investigated. Results concerning the pure salt-water experiments show that NH4Cl is the most performing salt in the concentration range probed, while higher power density v…

Determination of limiting current density and current efficiency in electrodialysis units

2018

Abstract A crucial parameter for the design and operation of electrodialysis (ED) units is the limiting current density (LCD). This is often identified with the diffusion-limited current density, which corresponds to the complete solute depletion in the layer adjacent to the membrane. Current-voltage curves obtained from measurements with electrodes in contact with the solution (i.e. without membranes) are consistent with this interpretation and exhibit a horizontal plateau identifying LCD. However, real ED systems show more complex behaviours, with a reduced-slope tract instead of a plateau and a third region in which the current increases more markedly (overlimiting current). The phenomen…

Ageing of isotactic polypropylene due to morphology evolution, experimental limitations of realtime density measurements with a gradient column

2006

Abstract Ageing in crystalline polymers is responsible for the deterioration of physical properties leading, for example, to a decrease in toughness and to dimensional changes that are to some extent responsible for warpage and scrap production in injection molding. Since, it depends on the mutual transformation of stable and metastable phases, being always related to changes in morphological organization, it is here preferred to call it ‘Morphological ageing’. Although, one would expect the ageing regime to be determined by the complex morphology with amorphous phases of different mobility and eventually multiple crystalline phases, transformed into each other at an associated transition, …

Heat to electricity conversion by cold carrier emissive energy harvesters

2015

This paper suggests a method to convert heat to electricity by the use of devices called cold carrier emissive energy harvesters (cold carrier EEHs). The working principle of such converters is explained and theoretical power densities and efficiencies are calculated for ideal devices. Cold carrier EEHs are based on the same device structure as hot carrier solar cells, but works in an opposite way. Whereas a hot carrier solar cell receives net radiation from the sun and converts some of this radiative heat flow into electricity, a cold carrier EEH sustains a net outflux of radiation to the surroundings while converting some of the energy supplied to it into electricity. It is shown that the…

Ferromagnetic kinetic exchange interaction in magnetic insulators

2020

The superexchange theory predicts dominant antiferromagnetic kinetic interaction when the orbitals accommodating magnetic electrons are covalently bonded through diamagnetic bridging atoms/groups. Here we show that explicit consideration of magnetic and (leading) bridging orbitals, together with the electron transfer between the former, reveals a strong ferromagnetic kinetic exchange contribution. First principle calculations show that it is comparable in strength with antiferromagnetic superexchange in a number of magnetic materials with diamagnetic metal bridges. In particular, it is responsible for a very large ferromagnetic coupling ($-10$ meV) between the iron ions in a Fe$^{3+}$-Co$^{…

Localized magnetic moments in the Heusler alloy Rh2MnGe

2009

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of core-level absorption (x-ray absorption spectroscopy, XAS) spectra in the soft x-ray region has been measured for the ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Rh2MnGe at the Rh M3,2 and Mn L3,2 edges. The ratio of Rh and Mn spin moments amounts to 0.05 which is smaller than the ratio of 0.1 determined by a local density approximation electronic band structure calculation. We have found that the orbital moments of the Rh 4d and Mn 3d states are very small. The observed Rh 2p XAS spectrum can be understood on the basis of the Rh 3d partial density of unoccupied states as is typical for metals. The observed features of the Mn 2p XAS and XMCD spectra are dominated…

cis-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2, the poor relative between cis and trans tautomers. A theoretical study of the gas-phase Fe L3-edge and C and O K-edg…

2021

The relative stability of trans-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2 (trans-I) and cis-I tautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (e) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence, trans-I is more stable than cis-I in a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol−1; e = 1), while the opposite is true in media with e > 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phase cis-I ⇆ trans-I equilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data of I have been recorded, ultimately indicate the trans-I …

EBIT diagnostics using X-ray spectra of highly ionized Ne

2003

We have carried out a detailed analysis of highly ionized neon spectra collected at the NIST EBIT using an NTD germanium X-ray microcalorimeter developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 444 (2000) 156]. Our attention was focused especially on the Ne IX He-like triplet to check electron density diagnostics through the intercombination/forbidden line ratio. We have investigated possible effects of the ion dynamics on the plasma emission line intensities, looking at the dependence of the count-rate and the charge state distribution on the electron beam energy and current. The temperature and spatial distribution of the neon ions, and hence the overl…

Quantitative molecular plating of large-area 242Pu targets with improved layer properties

2015

Abstract For measurements of the neutron-induced fission cross section of 242Pu, large-area (42 cm2) 242Pu targets were prepared on Ti-coated Si wafers by means of constant current density molecular plating. Radiochemical separations were performed prior to the platings. Quantitative deposition yields (>95%) were determined for all targets by means of alpha-particle spectroscopy. Layer densities in the range of 100–150 μg/cm2 were obtained. The homogeneity of the targets was studied by radiographic imaging. A comparative study between the quality of the layers produced on the Ti-coated Si wafers and the quality of layers grown on normal Ti foils was carried out by applying scanning electron…

Comparative Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Fe L-2,L-3-Edges X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in Three Highly Popular, Low-Spin Organoiron Com…

2019

The occupied and unoccupied electronic structures of three highly popular, closed shell organoiron complexes ([Fe(CO)(5)], [(eta(5)-C5H5 )Fe(CO)(mu-CO)](2), and [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Fe]) have been theoretically investigated by taking advantage of density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled to the isolobal analogy (Elian et al. Inorg. Chem. 1976, 15, 1148). The adopted approach allowed us to look into the relative role played by the ligand -> Fe donation and the Fe -> ligand back-donation in title molecules, as well as to investigate how CO- (terminal or bridging) and [(eta(5)-C5H5)](-)-based pi* orbitals compete when these two ligands are simultaneously present as in [(eta(5)-C5H…
