The stress relaxation behaviour after compression yielding of two semicrystalline polymers, a low density polyethylene and an isotactic polypropylene, is investigated. Data taken at several strains, reached with different sample loading rates, are considered. Master curves are obtained by means of dimensionless stress and time measures, similar to those recently adopted for some amorphous polymers. Effect of irradiation temperature and dose rate on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene

Abstract The effect of ageing due to gamma radiation, at various dose rates and temperatures, on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene is studied. In order to detect synergistic effects, tensile tests on samples subjected to thermal treatment corresponding to the same temperature for the same time as for the irradiation tests have also been performed. The results indicate a generalized decrease of the elongation at break, with brittleness of the material for the most severe ageing treatments. Improvement of the mechanical properties of photo-oxidized films after recycling

Mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics gives rise, in most cases, to secondary materials with mechanical properties worse than those of the reclaimed polymer. This is mostly due to the thermomechanical treatment undergone during the melt reprocessing operations. In this work, low density polyethylene films have been photo-oxidized in artificial accelerated ageing conditions and then the brittle films have been melt reprocessed. It is shown that the secondary material, after reprocessing, shows mechanical properties, in particular elongation at break, better than those of the photo-oxidized films. Durability of a strach-based biodegradable polymer

Abstract The photo-oxidation and the photo-stabilization of a commercial biodegradable polymer have been investigated in order to establish the possibility of using this polymer as raw material for films for agriculture. The degradation has been followed by measuring the mechanical properties as a function of photo-oxidation time and in particular by following the elongation at break. The virgin polymer, made from maize starch and a synthetic biodegradable polyester, shows poor resistance to the UV irradiation as observed by the fast decay of the elongation at break, but the presence of small amounts of conventional UV stabilizers strongly improves the durability of this polymer. Prediction of the flow curves of thermoplastic polymer/clay systems from torque data

Abstract The aim of this work was to determine some relevant rheological parameters of polymer/clay systems using mixing torque and mixing speed data obtained during processing in an internal mixer. The method used was originally proposed by Marquez et al. for monophase polymers, and is here applied to polymer/clay systems for the first time. Several clay-containing composites based on different polymer matrices (i.e., LDPE, HDPE, PA6, EVA) were used to verify the effectiveness of the method for measuring the flow curves of these polymer/clay systems. Recycled plastics are considered as materials with physical, mechanical and aesthetic properties worse than the virgin ones. Interactions between aroma and edible films. 1. Permeability Of methylcellulose and low-density polyethylene films to methyl ketones.

This work contributes to the study of aroma transfers through edible and plastic packaging films. Permeability, sorption, and diffusivity of three methyl ketones (2-heptanone, 2-octanone, and 2-nonanone) in and through low-density polyethylene and methylcellulose-based edible films have been determined. Permeability was measured using a dynamic method coupled with a gas chromatograph. The methyl ketone permeability of polyethylene films mainly depends on diffusivity of the penetrant in the polymer. Effect of conductivity of hole injection layer on the performance of a blue light emitting solution processable OLED

The performance of blue emitting OLED devices, using a polyspiro as blue light emitting polymer, were studied as a function of the conductivity of a novel hybrid hole injection material. The hole injection material is based on a polyarylamine using a molecular magnet as oxidant. The charge density and the luminance of the devices changed considerably with increasing conductivity of the hole injection layer. The change in device performance can be attributed to a change from a hole limited device to a balanced charge carrier device and eventually to an electron limited device. Efficient photovoltaic and electroluminescent perovskite devices.

Planar diode structures employing hybrid organic–inorganic methylammonium lead iodide perovskites lead to multifunctional devices exhibiting both a high photovoltaic efficiency and good electroluminescence. The electroluminescence strongly improves at higher current density applied using a pulsed driving method.

Perimeter leakage current in polymer light emitting diodes

Observation of leakage current paths through the device perimeter in standard poly(phenylene vinylene)-based light-emitting devices is reported. Perimeter leakage currents govern the diode performance in reverse and low positive bias and exhibit an ohmic character. Current density correlates with the perimeter-to-area ratio thus indicating that leakage currents are mainly confined on polymer regions in the vicinity of metallic contact limits (device perimeter). © 2008 Elsevier B.V.
