Weakly nonlinear analysis of Turing patterns in a morphochemical model for metal growth

2015

We focus on the morphochemical reaction–diffusion model introduced in Bozzini et al. (2013) and carry out a nonlinear bifurcation analysis with the aim to characterize the shape and the amplitude of the patterns arising as the result of Turing instability of the physically relevant equilibrium. We perform a weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis, and derive the normal form equations governing the amplitude of the patterns. These amplitude equations allow us to construct relevant solutions of the model equations and reveal the presence of multiple branches of stable solutions arising as the result of subcritical bifurcations. Hysteretic type phenomena are highlighted also through numerica…

Pattern Dystrophy of the Macula in a Case of Steinert Disease

2013

Introduction: Myotonic dystrophies are typically associated with ocular complications like ptosis, weakness of the ocular muscle and cataracts, but also with less recognized retinal changes. Case Report: A 41-year-old female with type 1 myotonic dystrophy complained of progressive vision loss. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of typical bilateral polychromatic cataract with posterior subcapsular component. Dilated fundus examination was remarkable for bilateral macular depigmented changes. Multimodal imaging analysis of the macula suggested the presence of a butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy. &l…

Interfacial Modification for High-Efficiency Vapor-Phase-Deposited Perovskite Solar Cells Based on a Metal Oxide Buffer Layer.

2018

Vacuum deposition is one of the most technologically relevant techniques for the fabrication of perovskite solar cells. The most efficient vacuum-based devices rely on doped organic contacts, compromising the long-term stability of the system. Here, we introduce an inorganic electron-transporting material to obtain power conversion efficiencies matching the best performing vacuum-deposited devices, with open-circuit potential close to the thermodynamic limit. We analyze the leakage current reduction and the interfacial recombination improvement upon use of a thin (<10 nm) interlayer of C60, as well as a more favorable band alignment after a bias/ultraviolet light activation process. This wo…

Subamorphous thermal conductivity of crystalline half-Heusler superlattices

2021

The quest to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit has mainly followed the roadmap of lowering the thermal conductivity while keeping unaltered the power factor of the material. Ideally an electron-crystal phonon-glass system is desired. In this work, we report an extraordinary reduction of the cross-plane thermal conductivity in crystalline (TiNiSn):(HfNiSn) half-Heusler superlattices (SLs). We create SLs with thermal conductivities below the effective amorphous limit, which is kept in a large temperature range (120–300 K). We measured thermal conductivity at room temperature values as low as 0.75 W m−1 K−1, the lowest thermal conductivity value reported so far for half-Heusler compou…

Direct Writing on Copper Ion Doped Silica Films by Electrogeneration of Metallic Microstructures

2017

International audience; A facile and rapid localized electrochemical reduction of colloid copper particles is proposed using the scanning electrochemical, microscope (SECM), technique. In this purpose, thin films of composite silica :glass containing copper salts were prepared by the sol-gel method via the dip coating technique. Acid-catalyzed tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS) solutions charged with copper nitrate were used as precursors. This one-pot experiment can be performed in mild conditions. The localized generation of copper metallic nanostructures on silica film has been performed by electroreduction of methyl viologen on an ultramicroelectrode (UME). The UME generates reducing species, …

X-ray absorption study of Ce?Ti oxide films

2001

Abstract X-ray absorption measurements at the Ce L 3 , L 1 and Ti K-edges have been done to study local structure and electronic properties of CeO 2 –TiO 2 thin films produced by reactive d.c. magnetron sputtering. The local environment around titanium and cerium ions can be described as pyramid-like and cube-like polyhedra, respectively, and the films are amorphous (correlation radius about 10 A). The analysis of Ce L 3 -edge XANES data has shown that the position of the Ce 4f 1 5d and 4f 0 5d states progressively shift towards lower energies with decreasing cerium dioxide content in the thin films.

Sputtering deposition and characterization of Ru-doped WO3 thin films for electrochromic applications

2003

Mixed tungsten-ruthenium oxide thin films were prepared for the first time by dc magnetron co-sputtering technique and were studied by cyclic voltammetry, optical transmission measurements, Raman spectroscopy and the W L3 and Ru K edges X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in comparison with pure WO3 films. The Ru concentration was varied in the range from 0 to 28 at.%. XAS results suggest that the average local structure around both tungsten and ruthenium ions remains unchanged within experimental accuracy in all samples, moreover, for tungsten ions, it resembles that of pure WO3 films. However, the presence of the ruthenium ions affects the electrochemical and optical properties of the fil…

2003

Structural investigations of the short range order around iridium and oxygen ions in nanocrystalline iridium oxide thin films, prepared by dc magnetron sputtering technique, were performed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Ir L3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure and the O K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure signals were measured at room temperature and analyzed within ab initio multiple-scattering and full-multiple-scattering approaches, respectively. The x-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicate the presence in the films of orderd regions - nanocrystals, having a size of about 10 angstrom and a structure rather close to that in crystalline iridium oxide IrO2. <title>Local structure of Ta-Re mixed oxide thin films studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy</title>

2003

Mixed Ta-Re oxide thin films were synthesized for the first time by dc magnetron co-sputtering. Local environment around tantalum and rhenium atoms was studied by the Ta and Re L3-edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy in pure Ta2O5 and mixed Ta-Re oxide thin films (Ta:Re = 50:50, 38:62, 20:80 as determined from the ratio of the Ta-to-Re absorption edges). It was found that rhenium atoms are four-fold coordinated by oxygen atoms with R(Re-O) = 1.74 ± 0.01 Å and the mean square relative displacement (MSRD) σ2 = 0.0012 ± 0.0005 Å2. In pure Ta2O5 thin film, tantalum ions are coordinated by six oxygen atoms at R(Ta-O) = 2.02 ± 0.01 Å with the MSRD σ2 = 0.010 ± 0.001 Å2. The addition of rhenium ion…

Enhanced flexibility and electron-beam-controlled shape recovery in alumina-coated Au and Ag core–shell nanowires

2017

The proper choice of coating materials and methods in core–shell nanowire (NW) engineering is crucial to assuring improved characteristics or even new functionalities of the resulting composite structures. In this paper, we have reported electron-beam-induced reversible elastic-to-plastic transition in Ag/Al2O3 and Au/Al2O3 NWs prepared by the coating of Ag and Au NWs with Al2O3 by low-temperature atomic layer deposition. The observed phenomenon enabled freezing the bent core–shell NW at any arbitrary curvature below the yield strength of the materials and later restoring its initially straight profile by irradiating the NW with electrons. In addition, we demonstrated that the coating effic…
