A Parallel Face Detection System Implemented on FPGA

In this paper, we introduce a methodology for designing a system for face detection and its implementation on FPGA. The chosen face detection method is the well-known convolutional face finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists in a pipeline of convolutions and subsampling operations. Our goal is to define a parallel architecture able to process efficiently this algorithm. Liquid chromatographic determination of Vitamin D3 in infant formulas and fortified milk

Abstract An isocratic reverse-phase liquid chromatographic (LC) method with electrochemical (EC) detection has been developed and validated for determining Vitamin D 3 in fortified milk and infant formulas. LC–EC determination provides linear responses in the range from 0.03 to 0.7 μg Vitamin D 3 /ml, with inter- and intra-day variations (R.S.D.%) of 4.1 and 4.4, respectively, and detection and quantification limits of 0.012 ng in assay (48 ng/100 g of sample) and 0.039 ng in assay (156 ng/100 g of sample), respectively. Application of the method to a set of infant formulas and fortified milk confirmed its usefulness.

A General Fuzzy-Parsing Scheme for Speech Recognition

In this paper a Speech Recognition Methodology is proposed which is based on the general assumption of ‘fuzzyness’ of both speech-data and knowledge-sources. Besides this general principle, there are other fundamental assumptions which are also the bases of the proposed methodology: ‘Modularity’ in the knowledge organization, ‘Homogeneity’ in the representation of data and knowledge, ‘Passiveness’ of the ‘understanding flow’ (no backtraking or feedback), and ‘Parallelism’ in the recognition activity.

The Decline in U.S. Output Growth Volatility: A Wavelet Analysis

The aim of the paper is to determine whether or not the volatility of the growth rate of US output has changed in the period since late 1940's, and to attribute a precise date, if possible, to any such change. By applying the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to the annualized quarter-to quarter output growth series, we can test the homogeneity of the variance on a scale by scale basis without needing to fit a parametric model to the observed time series. Constraining the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections with XENON1T

We report the first experimental results on spin-dependent elastic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering from the XENON1T dark matter search experiment. The analysis uses the full ton year exposure of XENON1T to constrain the spin-dependent proton-only and neutron-only cases. No significant signal excess is observed, and a profile likelihood ratio analysis is used to set exclusion limits on the WIMP-nucleon interactions. This includes the most stringent constraint to date on the WIMP-neutron cross section, with a minimum of 6.3 × 10−42 cm2 at 30 GeV/c2 and 90% confidence level. Projected WIMP sensitivity of the XENONnT dark matter experiment

XENONnT is a dark matter direct detection experiment, utilizing 5.9 t of instrumented liquid xenon, located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we predict the experimental background and project the sensitivity of XENONnT to the detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The expected average differential background rate in the energy region of interest, corresponding to (1, 13) keV and (4, 50) keV for electronic and nuclear recoils, amounts to 12.3 ± 0.6 (keV t y)-1 and (2.2± 0.5)× 10−3 (keV t y)-1, respectively, in a 4 t fiducial mass. Shell Model Description of Spin-Dependent Elastic and Inelastic WIMP Scattering off 119Sn and 121Sb

In this work, we calculate the spin structure functions for spin-dependent elastic and inelastic WIMP scattering off 119Sn and 121Sb. Estimates for detection rates are also given. 119Sn and 121Sb are amenable to nuclear structure calculations using the nuclear shell model (NSM). With the possible exception of 201Hg, they are the only such nuclei still unexplored theoretically for their potential of inelastic WIMP scattering to a very low excited state. The present calculations were conducted using a state-of-the-art WIMP–nucleus scattering formalism, and the available effective NSM two-body interactions describe the spectroscopic properties of these nuclei reasonably well.
