Control of powdery mildew in cut roses using natural products in the greenhouse.
2009
Roses grown under greenhouse cultivation are commonly affected by diseases and regular fungicide applications are commonly used. The aim of this research was to identify natural products that can substitute and reduce the health and environmental impacts of typical chemical treatments in the control of powdery mildew [(Podosphaera pannosa (Wallr. Fr.) de Bary] and grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.). Treatments were applied in the greenhouse on the cut rose cultivars Sunluck (Gold Strike®) and Nirpbredy (New Fashion®) growing in a soilless system. Oregano and clove essential oil at 0.5 ml/l (an emulsifier was added) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) at 4 g/l were sprayed on rose plants to run…
Dewatering of excess sludge produced by CAS and MBR aerobic treatment plants. effects of biochemical stability and EPS composition
2016
This paper investigates the behavior of different sludges from several treatment plants at full and pilot scale configured as Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS) and Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) plants treating different kinds of wastewaters. The sludges collected were subjected to complete analytical and technological characterization in order to correlate the rheological properties that affect the dewatering behavior to the sludge chemical physical properties. In detail the EPS from the samples collected is extracted and characterized in terms of carbohydrates, proteins, uronic acids and humic acids content. Moreover, once characterized, the sludges were subjected to AD in order to assess t…
La città di Alphabet. Architettura per prosumers.
2021
2022
Secular Religion as a Tool for the Realization of Democratic Citizenship. The Thesis of John Dewey (1859-1952)
2021
This contribution aims to propose a critical reflection on a particularly complex theme for international pedagogical literature: religion. This will be done through a constant dialogue with John Dewey, a philosopher and pedagogist of American origin who, in addition to having dedicated himself to philosophical, political and pedagogical issues, has had interesting reflections on the religious phenomenon. Therefore, attention will be turned to such of his writings as Moral Theory and Practice of 1891, in which Dewey treated the religious question implicitly, wondering about human conduct and the need for it to be oriented by a morality that directed the individual towards the exercise of th…

Arbitrary Phase Access for Stable Fiber Interferometers
2021
Well-controlled yet practical systems that give access to interference effects are critical for established and new functionalities in ultrafast signal processing, quantum photonics, optical coherence characterization, etc. Optical fiber systems constitute a central platform for such technologies. However, harnessing optical interference in a versatile and stable manner remains technologically costly and challenging. Here, degrees of freedom native to optical fibers, i.e., polarization and frequency, are used to demonstrate an easily deployable technique for the retrieval and stabilization of the relative phase in fiber interferometric systems. The scheme gives access (without intricate dev…
Grounding social criticism : from understanding to suffering and back
2019
This paper critically examines John Dewey’s and Axel Honneth’s critical social philosophies in order to highlight two different normative sources of social struggle: scientific understanding and social suffering. The paper discusses the relations of these sources with each other and aims to show to what extent the normative sources of Dewey’s and Honneth’s critical social theories are compatible. A further aim is to use the comparison between Dewey and Honneth in order to argue for a desiderata for critical social ontology. The argument is that we want to consistently include both elements – suffering and understanding – in critical social theory as only by having both will critical theory …
