Crosslinking of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) activated by electrogenerated hydroxyl radicals: a first step towards a simple and cheap synthetic route of na…
2016
A facile electrosynthesis route for the preparation of polymer nanogels based on the in situ production of hydroxyl radicals is reported for the first time. Electro-Fenton process with continuous H2O2 electrogeneration and Fe2+ regeneration performs better than electro-oxidation with a boron-doped diamond or dimensionally stable anode for promoting crosslinking of poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Single Semiconductor Nanocrystals under Compressive Stress: Reversible Tuning of the Emission Energy
2017
The photoluminescence of individual CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals has been investigated under external forces. After mutual alignment of a correlative atomic force and confocal microscope, individual particles were colocalized and exposed to a series of force cycles by using the tip of the AFM cantilever as a nanoscale piston. Thus, force-dependent changes of photophysical properties could be tracked on a single particle level. Remarkably, individual nanocrystals either shifted to higher or to lower emission energies with no indications of multiple emission lines under applied force. The direction and magnitude of these reversible spectral shifts depend on the orientation of nanocrys…
Evaluation of apical preparations performed with ultrasonic diamond and stainless steel tips at different intensities using a scanning electron micro…
2011
Objective: The objective of our study is to analyse (with the help of scanning electron microscopes) the quality of the dental root surface and the appearance of dental cracks after performing apical preparations using two diffe-rent types of ultrasonic tips. Study design: We used 32 single-rooted teeth that underwent a root canal and apical resection. Afterwards, the teeth were divided into 4 groups of 8 teeth each, with preparations of the apical cavities in the following manner: Group 1: stainless steel ultrasonic tip at 33KHz. Group 2: stainless steel ultrasonic tip at 30KHz. Group 3: diamond ultrasonic tip at 30KHz. Group 4: diamond ultrasonic tip at 33 KHz. The quality of the root sur…
We analyze the precious jewels listed in the Branciforti inventories. Various types of "giogali" emerge with which the protagonists of the important family were adorned, from Octavius to Anthony, Hercules and Joseph I, sometimes also identifiable in their portraits, kept by their heirs.
Examination of the shock wave regular reflexion phenomenon in a rarefied supersonic plasma flow
2005
The flow properties of a low-pressure weakly ionized supersonic argon plasma jet are examined using Fabry–Perot interferometry and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The flow velocity and equilibrium temperature measured at the torch nozzle exit are in close agreement with computational fluid dynamics calculations. The model also predicts the plasma flow to be in a rarefied regime. Departure from thermal equilibrium is indeed observed behind the nozzle where the parallel temperature differs significantly from the perpendicular temperature. The development of the axial velocity component along the jet center stream line reveals the occurrence of the shock wave regular reflexion phenome…
On-line tools for microscopic and macroscopic monitoring of microwave processing
2007
International audience; Direct monitoring of temperature, chemistry and microstructure is required to understand microwave heating in more detail, in order to fully exploit the unique features this non-equilibrium processing method can offer. In this paper, we show first that microwave radiometry can be used to follow volumetrically the thermal trajectory of microwave-heated aluminium powder. In-situ Raman spectroscopy is then shown to evidence thermal gradients between diamond and silicon grains in a binary powder mixture. Finally, perspectives and preliminary results of microstructural analysis obtained from X-ray microtomography are presented.
“Supramolecular” Solid-State Chemistry: Interpenetrating Diamond-Type Frameworks of U4+ Ions Linked byS,S′-Bidentate P2S62− Molecular Rods in UP4S12
2001
Inseparably interwoven are three independent polymeric diamond-type U(P2 S6 )2 frameworks in the structure of the title compound. The linear P2 S6 units act as molecular rods linking the pseudotetrahedral U4+ centers. U(P2 S6 )2 may be viewed as a coordination polymer which is formed from U/P/S melts by the solid-state equivalent of the self-assembly reactions in solution.
Reparability of giomer using different mechanical surface treatments
2016
Background In the repair process achieving high bond strength between the new and old resin based materials is necessary for clinical longevity. This study compared the effect of three different mechanical surface treatments (air abrasion, Nd:YAG laser and diamond bur) on the repair bond strength of giomer. Material and Methods In this in vitrostudy, 125 cylindrical giomer samples were used. The giomer samples were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n=25). In group 1, the samples did not undergo any surface treatment. In groups 2 to 4, the samples underwent surface treatments with air abrasion, Nd:YAG laser and a diamond bur. The samples in group 5 were prepared to measure giomer cohesive stren…
Fe-periclase reactivity at Earth's lower mantle conditions: Ab-initio geochemical modelling
2017
Intrinsic and extrinsic stability of the (Mg, Fe) O solid mixture in the Fe-Mg-Si-O system at high P, T conditions relevant to the Earth's mantle is investigated by the combination of quantum mechanical calculations (Hartree-26 Fock/DFT hybrid scheme), cluster expansion techniques and statistical thermodynamics. Iron in the (Mg, Fe) O binary mixture is assumed to be either in the low spin (LS) or in the high spin (HS) state. Un-mixing at solid state is observed only for the LS condition in the 23-42 GPa pressure range, whereas HS does not give rise to un-mixing. LS (Mg, Fe) O un-mixings are shown to be able to incorporate iron by subsolidus reactions with a reservoir of a virtual bridgmanit…
Phase behavior of metals at very high P–T conditions: A review of recent experimental studies
2006
Studies at extreme pressures and temperatures are helpful for understanding the physical properties of the solid state, including such classes of materials as, metals, semiconductors, superconductors, or minerals. In particular, the phase behavior of metals at extreme pressures and temperatures is a challenging problem with many implications for other fields including Earth and planetary sciences. However, despite the efforts performed, the phase behavior of metals at very high pressures (HPs) and temperatures has been proven hard to predict accurately and only a limited number of experimental methods for making measurements in the regime of megabar pressures and thousand degree temperature…
