Optical properties of Sicilian lakes during a Cyanophycea Planktothrix rubescens algal bloom

2009

In December 2006 blooms of Planktothrix rubescens were found in the reservoir Prizzi in Sicily. Planktothrix is a genus of filamentous alga comprising approximately 6 species, between these the P. rubescens is sadly famous since this organism produces microcystins which are powerful hepatotoxins. Firstly found in Europe in 1825 on Geneva lake, recently (2006) those algae has been find out in Pozzillo, Nicoletti e Ancipa reservoirs (Enna Province), as well as in Prizzi (Palermo Province) and Garcia reservoirs (Trapani Province). Toxins produced by those bacteria (usually called microcystine LR-1 and LR-2) are highly toxic since they can activate oncogenes cells causing cancer pathologies on …

Gas geochemistry and preliminary CO2 output estimation from the island of Kos (Greece)

2017

Several gas samples have been collected from natural gas manifestations at the island of Kos. Most of them are found underwater along the southern coast of the island. On land two anomalous degassing areas have been recognized. These are characterised by lack of vegetation and after long dry periods by the presence of sulfate salts efflorescences. Almost all the gases are CO2-dominated (CO2 ranging from 88 to 99%) with minor amounts of N2 (up to 7%) and CH4 (up to 2.6%). Only the on-land manifestations have also significant contents of H2 (up to 0.2%) and H2S (up to 0.3%). Only one underwater manifestation is N2-dominated (61-99%) with CH4 (0.6-11%) and low CO2 (0.1-26%). The isotopic compo…

ESR study of thianthrenium radical cation within acid zeolites

1997

Abstract Thianthrene (E ox = 1.47 V vs NHE) has been adsorbed into a series of zeolites beta (s) and ZSM-5 in the NH 4 + or H + forms, having different particle size and Si/Al ratio. The resulting population of generated thianthrenium radical cation was determined by a combination of diffuse reflectance and ESR spectroscopies. From the results obtained it can be concluded: i) the process takes predominantly place in the interior of the voids (XPS measurements and lack of influence of the particle size); ii) ZSM-5 is more efficient than zeolite s; iii) no strong acid sites are required (both NH 4 + and H + forms produced very similar spin concentrations); iv) the zeolite framework acts isola…

DEVIATORE DI FLUSSO PER TURBINE IDRAULICHE IN LINEA

2021

One pot light assisted green synthesis, storage and antimicrobial activity of dextran stabilized silver nanoparticles.

2014

Background Green synthesis of nanomaterials finds the edge over chemical methods due to its environmental compatibility. Herein, we report green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) mediated with dextran. Dextran was used as a stabilizer and capping agent to synthesize Ag NPs using silver nitrate (AgNO3) under diffused sunlight conditions. Results UV–vis spectra of as synthesized Ag nanoparticles showed characteristic surface plasmon band in the range from ~405-452 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies showed spherical Ag NPs in the size regime of ~50-70 nm. Face centered cubic lattice of Ag NPs was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD…

<title>Compact multi-functional skin spectrometry set-up</title>

2006

A portable fibre-optic spectrometry set-up has been assembled and tested for applications in skin diffuse reflectance spectrometry, laser fluorescence spectrometry and multi-wavelength reflection photoplethysmography (multi-PPG) studies. The spectrometry set was tested by diffuse reflectance and fluorescence measurements for diagnostics of skin vascular malformations and pigmented diseases such as nevi and melanoma . In addition, studies of microcirculation in blood vessels located at different depths from the skin surface were performed by the multi-PPG method. The results of skin diffuse reflectance and autofluorescence showed differences in spectra of healthy and pathologic skin. The par…

Comparison of a near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy system and skin conductance measurements for in vivo estimation of skin hydration: a clinical …

2017

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy system was developed for estimation of skin hydration in the near-infrared spectral range of 900-1700 nm. Experimental setup consisted of a near-infrared spectrometer, Y-type fiber optics probe with 1 detection and 6 illumination fibers, halogen-tungsten light source and a PC. By analyzing diffuse reflectance spectrum, a parameter representing skin hydration by performing baseline correction and calculating the area under the 1450 nm water absorption maximum is proposed. A clinical study was performed acquiring data of skin hydration of 39 patients' forearm skin. Results of the developed system are compared to results obtained by a commercial device based on…

Conventional MRI-Derived Biomarkers of Adult-Type Diffuse Glioma Molecular Subtypes: A Comprehensive Review.

2022

The introduction of molecular criteria into the classification of diffuse gliomas has added interesting practical implications to glioma management. This has created a new clinical need for correlating imaging characteristics with glioma genotypes, also known as radiogenomics or imaging genomics. Although many studies have primarily focused on the use of advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for radiogenomics purposes, conventional MRI sequences remain the reference point in the study and characterization of brain tumors. A summary of the conventional imaging features of glioma molecular subtypes should be useful as a tool for daily diagnostic brain tumor management. Hence, t…

An Insight into the Role of Postmortem Immunohistochemistry in the Comprehension of the Inflammatory Pathophysiology of COVID-19 Disease and Vaccine-…

2021

On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic due to the spread of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China, causing high mortality rates all over the world. The related disease, which mainly affects the lungs, is responsible for the onset of Diffuse Alveolar Damage (DAD) and a hypercoagulability state, frequently leading to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and multiorgan failure, particularly in old and severe-critically ill patients. In order to find effective therapeutic strategies, many efforts have been made aiming to shed light on the pathophysiology of COVID-19 disease. Moreover, following the late advent of vaccination campaigns, the need for the comprehension …

Comprehensive geriatric assessment is an essential tool to support treatment decisions in elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: A pros…

2015

We performed a multicenter study to validate the concept that a simple comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) can identify elderly, non-fit patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in whom curative treatment is not better then palliation, and to analyze potential benefits of treatment modulation after further subdividing the non-fit category by CGA criteria. One hundred and seventy-three patients aged > 69 treated with curative or palliative intent by clinical judgement only were grouped according to CGA into fit (46%), unfit (16%) and frail (38%) categories. Two-year overall survival (OS) was significantly better in fit than in non-fit patients (84% vs. 47%; p < 0.0001).…
