Validation of a 3D mathematical model for feed rod melting during floating zone Si crystal growth

Abstract A mathematical model of global 3D heat transfer in floating zone silicon single crystal growth process is used to predict the shape of the open melting front of the feed rod. The model is validated using measurement data from research-scale growth experiments. Shape profiles of the open melting front are obtained from the feed rod leftover using a movable dial gauge. Azimuthal asymmetry of the rim of the open melting front is revealed in both simulations and measurements, quantitatively indicating the influence of the main slit of the inductor.

The emissions of the major greenhouse gases (GHGs), i.e. carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) are of increasing concern in the water industry. In order to produce useful and comparable information for monitoring, assessing, and reporting GHG emissions from WRRFs, there is a need for a generally accepted methodology for their quantification. Small sized felids, such as wild and domestic cats, are one of the most common predators in the nature and in sites occupied by humans in archaeological and historical contexts. Wildcats have ingestion/ digestion traits highly destructive for their prey, i.e.: teeth to chew causing extreme breakage, and digestion along the entire digestive tract with low pH gastric juices causing extreme bone corrosion. Effect of addition of Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage on the biological leavening, physical, nutritional, antioxidant and sensory aspects of bread

The addition of active compounds to enhance the functional properties of foods is a quite common practice. Recently, bread became one of the target foods to incorporate functional ingredients such as those deriving from Opuntia spp. So far, only Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes in powder has been tested. The addition of fresh O. ficus-indica mucilage (in substitution to water) did not influence the biological leavening of the doughs. The resulting breads showed a biological role of the cactus mucilage, because their antioxidant activity was higher than that of control wheat bread. When Colorado potato beetle larvae ingested potato plants treated with the plant defense inducer compound hexanoic acid, midgut chymotrypsin enzyme activity increased, and the corresponding chymotrypsin genes were differentially expressed, evidence of the larval digestive proteolytic system's plasticity. We previously reported increased susceptibility to Cry3Aa toxin in larvae fed hexanoic acid treated plants. Food limitation constrains host immune responses to nematode infections.

Trade-offs in the allocation of finite-energy resources among immunological defences and other physiological processes are believed to influence infection risk and disease severity in food-limited wildlife populations. However, this prediction has received little experimental investigation. Due to their presumptive beneficial impact on human health, polyphenols in red wine have gained increasing public and scientific interest. Wine phenols are extremely sensitive to oxygen and are easily converted to brownish oxidation products accompanied by loss of nutritive values of the wine. Spoilage potential of Brettanomyces bruxellensis strains isolated from Italian wines

Abstract Brettanomyces bruxellensis is an important wine spoilage agent. In this study a population of Brettanomyces strains isolated from Italian wines was thoroughly investigated to evaluate adaptability to wine conditions and spoilage potential. The presumptive isolates of Brettanomyces were identified at species level with 26S rRNA gene sequencing and species-specific PCR, and subsequently subjected to analysis of intra-species variability through the study of intron splice sites (ISS-PCR). Comparable response of wild rodent gut microbiome to anthropogenic habitat contamination

Abstract Species identity is thought to dominate over environment in shaping wild rodent gut microbiota, but it remains unknown whether the responses of host gut microbiota to shared anthropogenic habitat impacts are species-specific or if the general gut microbiota response is similar across host species.
