A case of disseminated BCG infection in a daughter of Italian immigrants in Switzerland

2022

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a vaccine against tuberculosis and contains a live, attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis as its essential constituent. Being a live, attenuated strain with potential pathogenicity, BCG can cause different complications, both near the inoculation site and through blood dissemination, especially in patients with immunodeficiency. IFN-γR1 deficiency is an autosomal recessively inherited immunodeficiency characterized by predisposition to infections with intracellular pathogens, in particular mycobacteria.
We report a rare case of chronic osteomyelitis lasting 30 years due to BCG in a woman with IFN-γR1 deficiency who had previous clinical history of …

ESP

Determination of dissociation energies by use of energy-dependent decay pathway branching ratios

2001

Abstract We present a method for the determination of dissociation energies of polyatomic systems that undergo sequential fragmentation with energy-dependent decay pathway branching. It allows to experimentally determine the dissociation energy of any polyatomic system that shows such fragmentation behaviour without the need for a specific modelling of the system or of its fragmentation process, thus eliminating several systematic errors of traditional methods. The new method has been applied to the sequential fragmentation of Au+14 and Au+16. The resulting dissociation energies are highly accurate and in good agreement with model-free values based on rates of sequential decays.

Information as an essential link between natural science and human science : main focus : the impact of information on the functioning and behaviour …

2016

This thesis aims at considering the information as essential link between the sciences of the nature and the human sciences. It is mainly refered to principles of the natural science, allied in a set of scientific stemming approaches, in particular, theories of the complexity, of chaos, of information, auto-organization, emergences and ecosystems. The laws of the thermodynamics play a central role in this context, where the organization and the negentropy make directly part of the field of information production. There is in particular refered to Law of maximization of entropy Production (or, in other words, of energy dissipation), among which the incidence on the functioning and the behavi…

Nonlinear analysis of cylindrical and conical hysteretic whirl motions in rotor-dynamics

2014

Abstract The internal friction of a rotor–shaft-support system is mainly due to the shaft structural hysteresis and to some possible shrink-fit release of the assembly. The experimentation points out the destabilizing effect of the internal friction in the over-critical rotor running. Nevertheless, this detrimental influence may be efficiently counterbalanced by other external dissipative sources located in the supports or by a proper anisotropic configuration of the support stiffness. The present analysis considers a rotor–shaft system which is symmetric with respect to the mid-span and is constrained by viscous-flexible supports with different stiffness on two orthogonal planes. The cylin…

New simplified approach for obtaining a reliable plateau value in fatigue analysis of bituminous materials

2017

The Plateau Value (PV) based on the Ratio of Dissipated Energy Change (RDEC) approach has been proven to provide a unique relationship with the fatigue life, N-f, independent of loading mode, temperature and frequency. In this paper, a new simplified approach is proposed to compute the unique energy parameter PV. The results of this study show that applying the proposed method allows a unique fatigue power law to be produced and eliminates the ambiguity and variability in calculating PV. However, the study also shows that the PV-N-f fatigue curves for bituminous materials are dependent on material type which is contradictory to other studies dealing with PV. The study also highlights the im…

Reliable estimates in the anisotropic heat conduction problems

2014

Abstract The heat conduction problems for anisotropic bodies are studied taking into account the uncertainties in the material orientation. The best estimations of the upper and lower bounds of the considered energy dissipation functional are based on developing new approach consisting in solution of some optimization problems and finding the extremal internal material structures, which realize minimal and maximal dissipation. The motivation of this study comes from paper making processes, and more precisely, drying process, which consumes about 50% of the energy fed into the paper machine. The understanding of the effect of uncertainties in the process arises from structural properties of …

Real-time 3D imaging of Haines jumps in porous media flow.

2013

Newly developed high-speed, synchrotron-based X-ray computed microtomography enabled us to directly image pore-scale displacement events in porous rock in real time. Common approaches to modeling macroscopic fluid behavior are phenomenological, have many shortcomings, and lack consistent links to elementary pore-scale displacement processes, such as Haines jumps and snap-off. Unlike the common singular pore jump paradigm based on observations of restricted artificial capillaries, we found that Haines jumps typically cascade through 10–20 geometrically defined pores per event, accounting for 64% of the energy dissipation. Real-time imaging provided a more detailed fundamental understanding o…

A phenomenological model for the quantitative interpretation of partial suspension conditions in stirred vessels

2000

Publisher Summary Many important chemical engineering operations involve the suspension of solid particles in a liquid phase inside stirred tanks. Relevant examples include adsorption, crystallization, dissolution, leaching, precipitation, ion exchange and catalytic multiphase processes. This chapter describes a phenomenological model for the quantitative determination of the suspended solids mass fraction in stirred tanks operated at partial suspension conditions. Experimental data on fractional suspension, obtained by the “Pressure Gauge Technique” in vessels stirred by a downward-pumping pitched-blade-turbine, are presented. Furthermore, model predicted trends are compared with experimen…

Efficiency of Split-Way CVT's. A simplified model

2007

ABSTRACT In this paper, a general formula is obtained for the efficiency of all types of Split-Way CVT, consisting of one or two epicyclic trains, a number of fixed ratio gears and one variable speed unit (CVU). It is based on the application of the principle of virtual works and on the simplifying hypothesis that all the dissipation is lumped inside the CVU. The comparison with some experimental results from the literature shows a surprisingly good fit, also in the neighbourhoods of zero speed ratio. INTRODUCTION The possibility of changing the speed ratio continuously between the primary and the secondary shaft of a mechanical transmission is a very interesting topic, mainly in the automo…
