A European multicentre evaluation of detection and typing methods for human enteroviruses and parechoviruses using RNA transcripts

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. Some effects of a buried electricity transmission cable on bulk soil.

A case study in NW Italy investigating an underground electric line (1 m depth triple cable at operative voltages 220-380 kV) measured electric fields in the surrounding soil virtually close to zero but magnetic fields (microTs) 20 times the background level. After 6 months, the influence radius around the cable on microbial activity (estimated by soil ATP), organic carbon, and total nitrogen follows exactly the inverse trend of the MF, shifting the biological activity with a lag distance of 5 m from the 220 kV cable.

Quality control for exposure assessment in epidemiological studies

In the framework of an epidemiological study, dosemeters were used for the assessment of radio frequency electromagnetic field exposure. To check the correct dosemeter's performance in terms of consistency of recorded field values over the entire study period, a quality control strategy was developed. In this paper, the concept of quality control and its results is described. From the 20 dosemeters used, 19 were very stable and reproducible, with deviations of a maximum of +/- 1 dB compared with their initial state. BACKGROUND: The exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) is a urogenital birth defect of varying severity. The causes of the BEEC are likely to be heterogeneous, with individual environmental or genetic risk factors still being largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to identify de novo causative copy number variations (CNVs) that contribute to the BEEC. FUZZY RISK ANALYSIS OF A MODERN γ-RAY INDUSTRIAL IRRADIATOR

Fuzzy fault tree analyses were used to investigate accident scenarios that involve radiological exposure to operators working in industrial γ-ray irradiation facilities. The HEART method, a first generation human reliability analysis method, was used to evaluate the probability of adverse human error in these analyses. Introduction Diabetes Associated Protein in Insulin-sensitive Tissues (DAPIT) is a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase and has also been found to associate with the vacuolar H+-ATPase. Its expression is particularly high in cells with elevated aerobic metabolism and in epithelial cells that actively transport nutrients and ions. Deletion of DAPIT is known to induce loss of mitochondrial ATP synthase but the effects of its over-expression are obscure. Swellable microparticles containing Suprofen: evaluation of in vitro release and photochemical behaviour

Suprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug was incorporated in polymer networks based on biocompatible macromolecules, such as alpha,beta-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) and alpha,beta-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) crosslinked by glutaraldehyde or gamma-rays, respectively. Swelling tests carried out in aqueous media showed that pH value affects the swelling degree of the prepared hydrogels. Fluorimetric determination of captopril by flow injection analysis

A flow injection analysis procedure is proposed for the determination of captopril. The sample solution was directly injected into the carrier-reagent stream which was prepared by a solution of ceric ions in 0.25 M sulfuric acid. The procedure is based on the fluorimetric monitoring of the formed Ce(III). Chemical, FIA, and instrumental parameters were optimized and the procedure is applied to the captopril determination in pharmaceutical formulations with competitive precision and adequate accuracy.

FIA-fluorimetric determination of adrenaline by oxidation with a solid-phase reactor of manganese dioxide incorporated in polyester resin beads

Abstract The FIA-spectrofluorimetric determination of adrenaline was carried out by reaction of the drug with manganese dioxide entrapped in a polymeric material in a solid-phase reactor; the oxidized drug was monitored fluorimetrically at 540 nm (Ioxg. 330.0 nm). The calibration graph for adrenaline was linear over the range 0.5 - 20 μg ml−1 with a relative standard deviation of 2.0% (at 5 ug ml−1) and the sample throughput of 65 h−1.
