An insulating doped antiferromagnet with low magnetic symmetry as a room temperature spin conduit
2020
We report room temperature long-distance spin transport of magnons in antiferromagnetic thin film hematite doped with Zn. The additional dopants significantly alter the magnetic anisotropies, resulting in a complex equilibrium spin structure that is capable of efficiently transporting spin angular momentum at room temperature without the need for a well-defined, pure easy-axis or easy-plane anisotropy. We find intrinsic magnon spin-diffusion lengths of up to 1.5 {\mu}m, and magnetic domain governed decay lengths of 175 nm for the low frequency magnons, through electrical transport measurements demonstrating that the introduction of non-magnetic dopants does not strongly reduce the transport…
Large Zero-Field Cooled Exchange-Bias in BulkMn2PtGa
2013
We report a large exchange-bias (EB) effect after zero-field cooling the new tetragonal Heusler compound Mn2PtGa from the paramagnetic state. The first-principle calculation and the magnetic measurements reveal that Mn2PtGa orders ferrimagnetically with some ferromagnetic (FM) inclusions. We show that ferrimagnetic (FI) ordering is essential to isothermally induce the exchange anisotropy needed for the zero-field cooled (ZFC) EB during the virgin magnetization process. The complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures is characterized by the coexistence of a field induced irreversible magnetic behavior and a spin-glass-like phase. The field induced irreversibility originates from an unusual…
Effective strain manipulation of the antiferromagnetic state of polycrystalline NiO
2021
As a candidate material for applications such as magnetic memory, polycrystalline antiferromagnets offer the same robustness to external magnetic fields, THz spin dynamics, and lack of stray field as their single crystalline counterparts, but without the limitation of epitaxial growth and lattice matched substrates. Here, we first report the detection of the average Neel vector orientiation in polycrystalline NiO via spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Secondly, by applying strain through a piezo-electric substrate, we reduce the critical magnetic field required to reach a saturation of the SMR signal, indicating a change of the anisotropy. Our results are consistent with polycrystalline NiO…
Simultaneous Synthesis and Consolidation of Nanostructured MoSi2
2002
A new process combining electric field activation and the imposition of pressure from mechanically activated powder mixtures is demonstrated as a means to simultaneously synthesize and densify nano-MoSi2 in one step. Nanophase reactants (Mo + 2Si) produced by mechanical activation are reacted by field activation with the simultaneous application of a uniaxial pressure. Mo + 2Si powders were comilled in a specially designed planetary mill to obtain nanometric reactants but to avoid formation of any product phases. These were then subjected to high alternating currents (1600 A) and pressures of 106 MPa. Under these conditions, a reaction is initiated and completed within a short period of tim…
Nonlinear optical response of bulk ZnO crystals with different content of intrinsic defects
2018
Abstract The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of native defect-rich ZnO single crystals were studied in details within the excitation of the continuous wave (CW) and pulsed laser radiation at 532 nm (2.33 eV). Analysis of the experimental data of optical elastic scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), near infrared–visible–ultraviolet (NIR–Vis–UV) spectra recorded in reflection and absorption modes, and data of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy confirmed the contribution of both intrinsic defects and their clusters, being determined before by neutron diffraction and XRD analysis. It was shown that the high sensitivity of the NLO diagnostics via self-action of a laser beam is due …
RBS and ERD cross-sections and optical model parameters for the analysis of lithium, boron and nickel
2000
Abstract Elastic scattering cross-sections for RBS analysis of nickel by 7 Li and 11 B ion backscattering near the Coulomb barrier have been determined. The lithium ion measurements were performed in the energy range of 8–15 MeV at the laboratory angles of 115° and 135°. For boron ions the energies between 14 and 24 MeV and scattering angles of 89°, 110° and 130° were used. For the analysis of lithium and boron by ERD the scattering cross-sections have been calculated by kinematically reversing the backscattering process. The calculated 58 Ni ion energies thus varied between 65 and 125 MeV for lithium and between 75 and 130 MeV for boron recoils. For the Li + Ni and B + Ni systems the thres…

Towards the Improvement of Citizen Communication Through Computational Intelligence
2016
When dealing with problems that arise from collective sharing of resources in metropolitan areas (i.e., energy, pollution, traffic, health) most of the interaction between citizens and local governance is usually carried out through the use of natural languages. Digital technologies allows smart cities residents to communicate with a broad range of experts (e.g. bureaucrats, legislators, urbanists, etc.) that routinely use technical terminology seldom accessible to the layperson, or linguistic styles that are not immediately understandable. Although information technology should encourage citizen participation in governance at many levels, the different levels of knowledge possessed by the …
Multiple low-frequency broad band gaps generated by a phononic crystal of periodic circular cavity sandwich plates
2017
Abstract We propose a new type of phononic crystal (PnC) composed of a periodic alternation of circular cavity sandwich plates. In the low-frequency regime, the crystal can modulate the propagation of flexural waves. Governing equations are deduced basing on the classical theory of coupled extensional and flexural vibrations of plates. The dispersion relation of the infinite PnC is calculated by combining the transfer matrix method with Bloch theory. The dynamic response of the PnC with finite unit cells is further studied with finite element analysis. An experiment is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the PnC in vibration isolation. Numerical results and experimental results bo…
