Intravesical gemcitabine in superficial bladder tumors. Results of a phase I-II study
2004
the good tolerability of intravesical gemcitabine have been recently published. The evaluation of the activity on a papillary marker lesion is the best tool to measure the efficacy of a drug by intravesical route against superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCCB). The scientific background and the ethical acceptability of this approach have been validated by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Urological Group. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ablative efficacy of weekly intravesical instillations of gemcitabine against a histologically proven papillary marker lesion. MATERIAL & METHODS: Twenty-seven patients, affected by recurre…
Low density lipoproteins and human serum albumin as the carriers of squalenoylated drugs: insights from molecular simulations
2018
We have studied the interaction of three clinically promising squalenoylated drugs (gemcitabine-squalene, adenine-squalene, and doxorubicin-squalene) with low-density lipoproteins (LDL) by means of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that all studied squalenoylated drugs accumulate inside the LDL particles. This effect is promoted by the squalene moiety, which acts as an anchor and drives the hydrophilic drugs into the hydrophobic core of the LDL lipid droplet. Our data suggest that LDL particles could be a universal carriers of squalenoylated drugs in the bloodstream. Interaction of gemcitabine-squalene with human serum albumin (HSA) was also studied by ensemble of dockin…
The Shuffle Product: New Research Directions
2015
In this paper we survey some recent researches concerning the shuffle operation that arise both in Formal Languages and in Combinatorics on Words.
Design-based estimation for geometric quantiles with application to outlier detection
2010
Geometric quantiles are investigated using data collected from a complex survey. Geometric quantiles are an extension of univariate quantiles in a multivariate set-up that uses the geometry of multivariate data clouds. A very important application of geometric quantiles is the detection of outliers in multivariate data by means of quantile contours. A design-based estimator of geometric quantiles is constructed and used to compute quantile contours in order to detect outliers in both multivariate data and survey sampling set-ups. An algorithm for computing geometric quantile estimates is also developed. Under broad assumptions, the asymptotic variance of the quantile estimator is derived an…
On the arithmetic of a family of degree-two K3 surfaces
2018
Let $\mathbb{P}$ denote the weighted projective space with weights $(1,1,1,3)$ over the rationals, with coordinates $x,y,z,$ and $w$; let $\mathcal{X}$ be the generic element of the family of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}$ given by \begin{equation*} X\colon w^2=x^6+y^6+z^6+tx^2y^2z^2. \end{equation*} The surface $\mathcal{X}$ is a K3 surface over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. In this paper, we explicitly compute the geometric Picard lattice of $\mathcal{X}$, together with its Galois module structure, as well as derive more results on the arithmetic of $\mathcal{X}$ and other elements of the family $X$.
Oxygen isotope composition of North American bobcat (Lynx rufus) and puma (Puma concolor) bone phosphate: implications for provenance and climate rec…
2015
Feline carnivores are threatened by illegal wildlife trade. Tracing the provenance of unknown felid tissues via stable isotope analysis could provide important information in wildlife crime investigations. The oxygen isotope composition of mammalian skeletal phosphate (δ18Op) is widely applied to trace the origin of animal remains and to reconstruct migratory patterns in palaeontological, archaeological, ecological and wildlife forensic applications. Teeth and bones of terrestrial mammals form at constant body temperature in isotope equilibrium with body water, which is predominantly controlled by ingested meteoric water (δ18Ow) that varies systematically with latitude, altitude and climate…
Upper bounds on multiparty communication complexity of shifts
1996
We consider some communication complexity problems which arise when proving lower bounds on the complexity of Boolean functions. In particular, we prove an \(O(\frac{n}{{2\sqrt {\log n} }}\log ^{1/4} n)\)upper bound on 3-party communication complexity of shifts, an O(n e ) upper bound on the multiparty communication complexity of shifts for a polylogarithmic number of parties. These bounds are all significant improvements over ones recently considered “unexpected” by Pudlak [5].
Comparison of the detection of periodontal pathogens in bacteraemia after tooth brushing by culture and molecular techniques
2016
Background: The prevalence and amounts of periodontal pathogens detected in bacteraemia samples after tooth brushing-induced by means of four diagnostic technique, three based on culture and one in a molecular-based technique, have been compared in this study. Material and Methods: Blood samples were collected from thirty-six subjects with different periodontal status (17 were healthy, 10 with gingivitis and 9 with periodontitis) at baseline and 2 minutes after tooth brushing. Each sample was analyzed by three culture-based methods [direct anaerobic culturing (DAC), hemo-culture (BACTEC), and lysis-centrifugation (LC)] and one molecular-based technique [quantitative polymerase chain reactio…
