The assessment of environmental pollution caused by mining and metallurgy wastes from highly polluted post-industrial regions in Southern Poland
2012
Stored metallurgy and mining wastes contain relatively high amounts of potentially toxic elements. To monitor the distribution of contaminants originating from dumps, the chemical and physical properties of the wastes must be characterised. In this study, the chemical properties of wastes deposited in two different locations in Southern Poland (Szklary and Zloty Stok) were evaluated. Heaps located in Zloty Stok contain wastes from gold mineralisation comprising arsenic while wastes in Szklary originate from a factory that produced an iron-nickel alloy. In Szklary the total concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Tl, Ag, Cd and Pb were determined, while in Zloty Stok also As is…
A simple method to directly retrieve reference evapotranspiration from geostationary satellite images
2013
Abstract Application of FAO-56 methodology for the assessment of reference evapotranspiration, ET 0 , is challenging in areas of the world with sparse meteorological network stations. For this reason alternative procedures using remotely observed data have been proposed in the literature. In this work, a simplified version of the Makkink approach [J. Inst. Wat. Eng. 11: 277–288, 1957] was tested in a typical Mediterranean environment (Sicily, Italy). The implemented Makkink approach (MAK) uses remotely estimated solar radiation derived from Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite data and in situ observations of air temperature to assess ET 0 at daily time scale. Alternatively, taking ad…
Comparative analysis of different techniques for spatial interpolation of rainfall data to create a serially complete monthly time series of precipit…
2011
Abstract The availability of good and reliable rainfall data is fundamental for most hydrological analyses and for the design and management of water resources systems. However, in practice, precipitation records often suffer from missing data values mainly due to malfunctioning of raingauge for specific time periods. This is an important issue in practical hydrology because it affects the continuity of rainfall data and ultimately influences the results of hydrologic studies which use rainfall as input. Many methods to estimate missing rainfall data have been proposed in literature and, among these, most are based on spatial interpolation algorithms. In this paper different spatial interpo…
Lysine synthesis control in Corynebacterium glutamicum RC 115 in mixed substrate (glucose-acetate) medium.
2003
The effect of acetate as a glucose co-substrate on growth, lysine synthesis and experimental lysine yield from carbon substrates by Corynebacterium glutamicum RC 115 was investigated. It was found that low amounts of acetate, injected with a glucose-acetate pulse into the steady-state continuous culture in bioreactor, caused a slight decrease in the specific rates of glucose uptake and bacterial growth, but a significant increase in the cell specific rate of lysine synthesis and an increase in lysine yield. In contrast, acetate injected in high amounts was followed by a drastic decrease in the values of these parameters. A strong increase in experimental lysine yield under the latter condit…
A new actor involved in hypothalamic glucose detection : the Transient Receptor Potential Canonical (TRPC) channels
2015
Hyperglycemia is detected and integrated by the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) which, in turn, inhibits food intake and triggers insulin secretion. The MBH houses specialized glucose-sensitive (GS) neurons, which directly or indirectly modulate their electrical activity in response to changes in glucose level. In a first study, we hypothesized that indirect detection of glucose by MBH GS neurons involves the secretion of endozepine by astrocytes, a gliotransmitter known to inhibit food intake in response to hyperglycemia. The present work shows that endozepines selectively activate anorexigenic MBH pro-opiomelanotortine (POMC) neurons. In the second study, we show that the direct detection o…
Long-Term Behavioral Programming Induced by Peripuberty Stress in Rats Is Accompanied by GABAergic-Related Alterations in the Amygdala
2014
Stress during childhood and adolescence is a risk factor for psychopathology. Alterations in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, have been found following stress exposure and fear experiences and are often implicated in anxiety and mood disorders. Abnormal amygdala functioning has also been detected following stress exposure and is also implicated in anxiety and social disorders. However, the amygdala is not a unitary structure; it includes several nuclei with different functions and little is known on the potential differences the impact of early life stress may have on this system within different amygdaloid nuclei. We aimed here to evaluate pote…
Glial Protection Against Neuronal Damage
1997
Glial homeostatic mechanisms are involved in neuronal protection during the early phase of cerebral ischemia. These protective effects include, among others, glutamate uptake and the regulation of pH in the extracellular space of the brain. Uptake of glutamate goes along with glial swelling, as does the elimination of protons from the glial cytosol. Five transport systems interact in order to maintain a normal intra- and extracellular pH in the brain.
IMPROVEMENT IN REDOX HOMEOSTASIS AFTER CYTOREDUCTIVE SURGERY IN COLORECTAL ADENOCARCINOMA
2021
Colorectal cancer (CRC) as one the most common cancer type is associated with oxidative stress. Surgery is the only curative modality for early-stage CRC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative damage biomarkers as well as enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants in patients with CRC before and after tumor resection and in healthy controls. 60 patients with stage I/II colorectal adenocarcinoma and 43 healthy controls were recruited in this study. We measured plasma levels of oxidative damage biomarkers, including advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), advanced glycation end products (AGEs), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) at baseline and…
Stereoselective synthesis of the naturally occurring styryllactones (+)-goniofufurone and (+)-cardiobutanolide.
2004
The naturally occurring gamma-lactones (+)-goniofufurone 1 and (+)-cardiobutanolide 2, two pharmacologically active products from Goniothalamus species (Annonaceae), have been synthesized in enantiopure form using l-erythrulose as the chiral starting material. Key steps of these syntheses were a stereoselective anti boron aldol reaction and an asymmetric allylboration.
