Covalently bonded layer-by-layer assembly of multifunctional thin films based on activated esters.

We demonstrate that chemically stable, multifunctional polymer thin films can be obtained using the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition based on covalent bonds between adsorbing chains. Poly(pentafluorophenyl-4-vinylbenzoate) (P1) or poly(pentafluorophenylacrylate) (P2) polymers were assembled with poly(allyl amine) (PAAm) to yield LbL multilayer films through amide bond formation by the reaction between activated esters of P1 or P2 and amine groups in PAAm, which was quantitatively monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Asymmetric synthesis of fluorinated amino macrolactones through ring-closing metathesis

The synthesis of new chiral fluorinated amino and azamacrolactones of types 1 and 2 is described. A ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction constitutes the key step in this methodology, which uses fluorinated amino alcohols 7 as starting materials. The influence of the CF2 group, which is located in the alpha-position relative to the carbon bearing the amino group, on the efficiency of the RCM reaction is noteworthy. This method allows for the preparation of the desired fluorinated macrolactones in excellent yields.

Synthesis of (S)-(+)-sotalol and (R)-(−)-isoproterenol via a catalytic enantioselective Henry reaction

Abstract A unified approach for the synthesis of ( S )-(+)-sotalol and ( R )-(−)-isoproterenol has been developed. The enantioselective Henry reaction of the appropriate aldehyde in the presence of a camphor-derived amino pyridine–Cu(II) complex was the key step of the synthesis. The reduction of the nitro group to give the corresponding amino alcohols followed by reductive alkylation of the amine provided the target products with high enantiomeric excesses.

The role of Zn2+ in enhancing the rate and stereoselectivity of the aldol reactions catalyzed by the simple prolinamide model

Abstract The aldol reaction between acetone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde catalyzed by single l -prolinamide and its zinc complexes has been studied. An increase in the rate and the stereoselectivity of the reaction has been shown by using zinc derivatives. A mechanistic proposal, based on NMR and ESI studies, has been put forward to explain the experimental data: zinc–prolinamide complexes catalyze the reaction following the general mechanism of stereoselective enamine nucleophilic addition to the acceptor aldehyde. Zn2+ prevents the nonspecific base-catalyzed reaction by diminishing the basicity of the amine nitrogen of prolinamide.

Exploring new activating groups for reactive cysteine NCAs

Abstract Due to its ability to reversibly crosslink proteins, cysteine has a unique role as an amino acid in nature. For controlled, asymmetric formation of disulfides from two thiols, one thiol needs to be activated. While few activating groups for cysteine have been proposed, they are usually not stable against amines making them unsuitable for solid phase peptide synthesis or amine initiated polymerization of α-amino acid-N-carboxy-anhydrides (NCAs). In this Letter we describe a series of new thiol activated cysteines, as well as their NCAs and explore the link between electron deficiency of the leaving group and control over NCA polymerization.

Multiplicity of Reaction Pathways in the Processes of Oxygen Transfer to Secondary Amines by Mo(VI) and W(VI) Peroxo Complexes.

Oxidation of N,N-benzylmethylamine, N,N-benzylisopropylamine, and N,N-benzyl-tert-butylamine by both anionic and neutral Mo(VI) and W(VI) oxodiperoxo complexes yields the corresponding nitrones quantitatively. The oxidation reactions employing anionic oxidants were performed in CHCl(3) and follow second-order kinetics, first order with respect to the amine and to the oxidant. The data were rationalized on the basis of a rate-determining nucleophilic attack of the amine onto the peroxide oxygen of the oxidant, with a transition state in which N-O bond formation and O-O bond cleavage occur in a concerted way (electrophilic oxygen transfer mechanism). Multi-photon imaging of amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles.

A convenient and simple strategy for preparing water soluble, photoluminescent functionalized silica nanoparticles (M-dots) in the absence of fluorophores or metal doping is demonstrated. These M-dots can be used for bioimaging using one and two-photon microscopy. Because of their high photostability, low toxicity and high biocompatibility compared with Lumidot™ CdSe/ZnS quantum dots, functionalized silica particles are superior alternatives for current bioimaging platforms. Citric Acid Based Carbon Dots with Amine Type Stabilizers: pH-Specific Luminescence and Quantum Yield Characteristics

We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characteristics of two different sets of carbon dots (CDs) formed by hydrothermal reaction between citric acid and polyethylenimine (PEI) or 2,3-diaminopyridine (DAP). Although the formation of amide-based species and the presence of citrazinic acid type derivates assumed to be responsible for a blue emission is confirmed for both CDs by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, a higher abundance of sp2-hybridized nitrogen is observed for DAP-based CDs, which causes a red-shift of the n-π* absorption band relative to the one of PEI-based CDs.
