Optimum Carrier Concentration in n-Type PbTe Thermoelectrics
2014
Taking La- and I-doped PbTe as an example, the current work shows the effects of optimizing the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, by controlling the doping level. The high doping effectiveness allows the carrier concentration to be precisely designed and prepared to control the Fermi level. In addition to the Fermi energy tuning, La-doping modifies the conduction band, leading to an increase in the density of states effective mass that is confirmed by transport, infrared reflectance and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Taking such a band structure modification effect into account, the electrical transport properties can then be well-described by a self-consistent single…
Optimization of the carrier concentration in phase-separated half-Heusler compounds
2014
Inspired by the promising thermoelectric properties of phase-separated half-Heusler materials, we investigated the influence of electron doping in the n-type Ti_(0.3−x)Zr_(0.35)Hf_(0.35)NiSn compound. The addition of Nb to this compound led to a significant increase in its electrical conductivity, and shifted the maximum Seebeck coefficient to higher temperatures owing to the suppression of intrinsic carriers. This resulted in an enhancement of both the power factor α^2σ and figure of merit, zT. The applicability of an average effective mass model revealed the optimized electron properties for samples containing Nb. There is evidence in the literature that the average effective mass model i…
Photoluminescence study of excitons in homoepitaxial GaN
2001
High-resolution photoluminescence spectra have been measured in high-quality homoepitaxial GaN grown on a free-standing GaN substrate with lower residual strain than in previous work. Unusually strong and well-resolved excitonic lines were observed. Based on free- and bound exciton transitions some important GaN parameters are derived. The Arrhenius plot of the free A exciton recombination yields a binding energy of 24.7 meV. Based on this datum, an accurate value for the band-gap energy, EG(4.3 K) = 3.506 eV, can be given. From the donor bound excitons and their “two-electron” satellites, the exciton localization energy and donor ionization energy are deduced. Finally, estimates of the ele…
Impact of nitrogen doping on the band structure and the charge carrier scattering in monolayer graphene
2021
The addition of nitrogen as a dopant in monolayer graphene is a flexible approach to tune the electronic properties of graphene as required for applications. Here, we investigate the impact of the doping process that adds N dopants and defects on the key electronic properties, such as the mobility, the effective mass, the Berry phase, and the scattering times of the charge carriers. Measurements at low temperatures and magnetic fields up to 9 T show a decrease of the mobility with increasing defect density due to elastic, short-range scattering. At low magnetic fields weak localization indicates an inelastic contribution depending on both defects and dopants. Analysis of the effective mass …
Nonlocal energy density functionals for pairing and beyond-mean-field calculations
2017
We propose to use two-body regularized finite-range pseudopotential to generate nuclear energy density functional (EDF) in both particle-hole and particle-particle channels, which makes it free from self-interaction and self-pairing, and also free from singularities when used beyond mean field. We derive a sequence of pseudopotentials regularized up to next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO), which fairly well describe infinite-nuclear-matter properties and finite open-shell paired and/or deformed nuclei. Since pure two-body pseudopotentials cannot generate sufficiently large effective mass, the obtained solutions constitute a preliminary step towards future imp…
Neutrino phenomenology and stable dark matter with A4
2011
We present a model based on the A4 non-abelian discrete symmetry leading to a predictive five-parameter neutrino mass matrix and providing a stable dark matter candidate. We found an interesting correlation among the atmospheric and the reactor angles which predicts theta_23 ~ pi/4 for very small reactor angle and deviation from maximal atmospheric mixing for large theta_13. Only normal neutrino mass spectrum is possible and the effective mass entering the neutrinoless double beta decay rate is constrained to be |m_ee| > 4 10^{-4} eV.
When are thin films of metals metallic? Part III
1996
Abstract A large amount of experimental information has indicated that very thin films of metallic elements can exhibit nonmetallic behavior, even on metal substrates. These films undergo a gradual nonmetal to metal transition with increasing film density or thickness. The nonmetallic behavior can be related to electron localization due to strong electron-electron correlation in low dimensional systems, as indicated by the strong enhancement of electron effective mass. The evolution in the electronic structure associated with the nonmetal to metal transition bears a striking resemblance to the behavior observed for free metal clusters. Part I [1], outlined the general concepts of a nonmetal…
High pressure and high magnetic field behaviour of free and donor-bound-exciton photoluminescence in InSe
2009
We report here first magneto-photoluminescence investigations under high pressure up to 6 GPa on III-VI layered semiconductor InSe. Both diamagnetism and magnetic field induced gap opening driven by Landau quantization became observable by using a 60 T pulsed magnet. The pressure-induced enhancement of the diamagnetic coefficient is consistent with the increase of the dielectric constant under pressure while the evolution of the linear coefficient is consistent with a slight increase of the electron effective mass up to 4 GPa and a direct-to-indirect conduction-band crossover around that pressure.
Origin of the Enhanced Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in MAPbBr 3 Perovskite with Reduced Crystal Size
2018
Methylammonium lead bromide perovskite (MAPbBr3) has been widely investigated for applications in visible perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Fine-tuning of the morphology and of the crystal size, from the microscale down to the quantum confinement regime, has been used to increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, the physical processes underlying the PL emission of this perovskite remain unclear. Here, we elucidate the origin of the PL emission of polycrystalline MAPbBr3 thin films by different spectroscopic techniques. We estimate the exciton binding energy, the reduced exciton effective mass, and the trap density. Moreover, we confirm the coexistence of free carr…
