A grain boundary formulation for crystal plasticity

2016

Abstract A three-dimensional grain-boundary formulation for small strains crystal plasticity is presented for the first time. The method is developed and implemented for both single grains and polycrystalline aggregates and it is based on the use of a suitable set of boundary integral equations for modelling the individual grains, which are represented as anisotropic elasto-plastic domains. In the boundary integral framework, crystal plasticity is modelled resorting to an initial strains approach and specific aspects, related to the integration of strongly singular volume integrals in the anisotropic elasto-plastic grain-boundary equations, are discussed and suitably addressed for the first…

A New Technique of Invariant Statistical Embedding and Averaging in Terms of Pivots for Improvement of Statistical Decisions Under Parametric Uncerta…

2021

In this chapter, a new technique of invariant embedding of sample statistics in a decision criterion (performance index) and averaging this criterion via pivotal quantities (pivots) is proposed for intelligent constructing efficient (optimal, uniformly non-dominated, unbiased, improved) statistical decisions under parametric uncertainty. This technique represents a simple and computationally attractive statistical method based on the constructive use of the invariance principle in mathematical statistics. Unlike the Bayesian approach, the technique of invariant statistical embedding and averaging in terms of pivotal quantities (ISE&APQ) is independent of the choice of priors and represents …

An Introduction to Kernel Methods

2009

Machine learning has experienced a great advance in the eighties and nineties due to the active research in artificial neural networks and adaptive systems. These tools have demonstrated good results in many real applications, since neither a priori knowledge about the distribution of the available data nor the relationships among the independent variables should be necessarily assumed. Overfitting due to reduced training data sets is controlled by means of a regularized functional which minimizes the complexity of the machine. Working with high dimensional input spaces is no longer a problem thanks to the use of kernel methods. Such methods also provide us with new ways to interpret the cl…

Quasisymmetric extension on the real line

2018

We give a geometric characterization of the sets $E\subset \mathbb{R}$ that satisfy the following property: every quasisymmetric embedding $f: E \to \mathbb{R}^n$ extends to a quasisymmetric embedding $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^N$ for some $N\geq n$.

Normal forms and embeddings for power-log transseries

2016

First return maps in the neighborhood of hyperbolic polycycles have their asymptotic expansion as Dulac series, which are series with power-logarithm monomials. We extend the class of Dulac series to an algebra of power-logarithm transseries. Inside this new algebra, we provide formal normal forms of power-log transseries and a formal embedding theorem. The questions of classifications and of embeddings of germs into flows of vector fields are common problems in dynamical systems. Aside from that, our motivation for this work comes from fractal analysis of orbits of first return maps around hyperbolic polycycles. This is a joint work with Pavao Mardešić, Jean-Philippe Rolin and Vesna Župano…

Embedding Monitoring Systems for Cured-In-Place Pipes

2017

This paper proposes a non-intrusive electrical measurement system for monitoring some relevant parameters in pipeline systems. Temperature and flow-rate are monitored, using MEMS sensors. The flow-rate is evaluated by measuring pipe vibration, with a 3 axis accelerometer, induced by turbulence when fluid flows within the tube. The sensors are embedded, during the curing process of the cured-in-place pipes, in the pipes wall making the system suitable to be installed in renewed or new pipeline. The first experimental results show that it may be possible to obtain, at low-cost, a fully monitored distribution network.

Non-uniform multivariate embedding to assess the information transfer in cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory variability series

2012

The complexity of the short-term cardiovascular control prompts for the introduction of multivariate (MV) nonlinear time series analysis methods to assess directional interactions reflecting the underlying regulatory mechanisms. This study introduces a new approach for the detection of nonlinear Granger causality in MV time series, based on embedding the series by a sequential, non-uniform procedure, and on estimating the information flow from one series to another by means of the corrected conditional entropy. The approach is validated on short realizations of linear stochastic and nonlinear deterministic processes, and then evaluated on heart period, systolic arterial pressure and respira…

Detecting nonlinear causal interactions between dynamical systems by non-uniform embedding of multiple time series.

2010

This study introduces a new approach for the detection of nonlinear Granger causality between dynamical systems. The approach is based on embedding the multivariate (MV) time series measured from the systems X and Y by means of a sequential, non-uniform procedure, and on using the corrected conditional entropy (CCE) as unpredictability measure. The causal coupling from X to Y is quantified as the relative decrease of CCE measured after allowing the series of X to enter the embedding procedure for the description of Y. The ability of the approach to quantify nonlinear causality is assessed on MV time series measured from simulated dynamical systems with unidirectional coupling (the Rössler-…

Diffusion of naltrexone across reconstituted human oral epithelium and histomorphological features

2006

Abstract In transbuccal absorption a major limitation could be the low permeability of the mucosa which implies low drug bioavailability. The ability of naltrexone hydrochloride (NLX) to penetrate a resembling histologically human buccal mucosa was assessed and the occurrence of any histomorphological changes observed. We used reconstituted human oral (RHO) non-keratinised epithelium as mucosal section and a Transwell diffusion cells system as bicompartmental model. Buccal permeation was expressed in terms of drug flux ( J s ) and permeability coefficients ( K p ). Data were collected using both artificial and natural human saliva. The main finding was that RHO does not restrain NLX permeat…
