ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the meaning of the impresa or device of the pomegranates, with the motto « Agro dulce », utilized by Henry IV (1425-1474), of the House of Trastamara, King of Castile from 1454 until his death. By means of a review of vestiges that remain of the device, especially in architectonic elements, I postulate that the pomegranate may have been used as the family impresa of the House of Trastamara and their descendants. This, it seems, can be deduced from the pictura of the device in several personal imprese of relatives who lived in the sixteenth century. ABSTRACT: If in the French original of Le Chevalier delibere one can appreciate the intimate relationship between the poetic text and the gorgeous engravings that accompany and illustrate it, in the tranlated version of Acuna this association is even stronger, to the point that one might say that the translator not only translates the French text linguistically, but also the book's images. This results then in a fusion between text and images that points clearly towards an emblematic vision in the book. ABSTRACT: The allegory of the body as a prison of the soul was visually depicted as a skeleton that imprisons a figure with childish features. One of the earliest examples of this image is the emblem «Infelix ego homo!» included in Herman Hugo’s Pia Desideria (1624); however the pictura was incorporated in other media and contexts allowing its survival even to the end of the 19th century. In Mexico, it evolved from an ascetic-moralistic book to a popular pamphlet of ghostly apparitions revealed in dreams. How did this emblem –based on Neoplatonic philosophy– evolve from a book written in Latin to a popular nineteenth century pamphlet? Did it conserve part of its original meaning?

The book is a festive commemoration offered by the priests and students of the Flemish-Belgian Province in celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. ABSTRACT: The first Bible translated completely into Spanish, by Casiodoro de Reina, was published in Basel in 1569. It is known as The Bible of the Bear in reference to the emblem featured on its title-page. The interpretation of this emblem has been largely unsatisfactory. This study proposes a new interpretative hypothesis based on the comparison of the emblems in the first two Protestant Spanish Bibles: The Bible of the Bear and The Bible of the Pitcher . ABSTRACT: This article studies the ceremonial funeral rites for Prince Baltasar Carlos of Austria, son of Philip IV and the hope for the healing of a monarchy in crisis, in the exequies celebrated in the city of Zaragoza, where the young heir to the throne died shortly before his seventeenth birthday, in 1646. The monumental catafalque erected in the plaza of the market place (a fantastic ephemeral tumulus characterized by a splendid Baroque architecture full of symbols), demonstrates the magnificence with which the death of such a beloved prince was presented to the public, in the second third of the seventeenth century. The emblem tradition in Shakespeare’s plays: mirror-effects and anamorphoses

ABSTRACT: An emblem is a witty combination of various texts and one image which delivers a moral message. The emblem is an art of the gaze, the purpose of which is to lead the eye to the transcendent ideas lying behind the veil of worldly appearances. Shakespeare was obviously sensitive to the visual potential of emblems. This paper aims to show that Shakespeare drew upon the modus operandi of emblems but rejected the emblem as a fixed ideological discourse.
